Occupational diseases in dentistry: Prevention.

BACKGROUND: Dentists, in the practice of their profession, are exposed to infectious diseases (most commonly hepatitis and HIV), biological accidents involving needles or sharp instruments and chemical intoxication from disinfectants, cements or dental resins. Also, they may suffer musculoskeletal disorders due to bad ergonomic postures, hearing loss and eye splashes or vision loss due to curing light, intense artificial lighting from dental units and constant visual strain in a limited space. Moreover, mental illnesses have been detected such as psychological issues like stress, fatigue, burn

Occupational exposure in dentistry and miscarriage.

BACKGROUND: Information on the reproductive effects of chemical exposures in dental work is sparse or inconsistent. AIM: To investigate whether dental workers exposed to acrylate compounds, mercury amalgam, solvents or disinfectants are at an increased risk of miscarriage. METHODS: The study was conducted among women dental workers and a comparison group of workers occupationally unexposed to dental restorative materials. Information on pregnancies was obtained from national registers and outpatient units of hospitals. Data on occupational exposure were obtained using postal questionnaires.

Occupation-related allergies in dentistry.

BACKGROUND: Allergies to natural rubber latex (NRL) were unknown in dentistry until 1987. That changed with the publication of a report documenting NRL-based anaphylaxis in a dental worker. This case and others prompted regulatory and manufacturing changes in rubber products and increased awareness throughout the profession. However, other common dental chemicals cause allergic reactions and irritation and often are handled with insufficient precautions. Although recognition of NRL allergy has improved, awareness of other potential allergens and irritants in dentistry still is limited. OVERVI

Occupational contact allergic dermatitis in dentistry.

INTRODUCTION: Dental professionals may be at increased risk of developing occupational allergic diseases specially to methacrylates that can permeate protective disposable gloves. CASE REPORT: We presented a case of occupational allergic contact dermatitis in a 28-year-old dental technician. The patient had complained of itching and cracking of fingers for 6 months. The dermatitis improved over weekends. Skin erythema and scaling were present with primarily involvement of the fingertips. Patch testing with dental series gave positive vesicular reaction to methyl methacrylate. Follow-up after

The role of biomaterials as occupational hazards in dentistry.

Many of the biomaterials and auxilliary products used in dentistry are chemically and biologically reactive and may be of concern in occupational safety programmes. Observations from 1936 to 1975 indicated that most occupational problems were related to skin contact with procaine, soaps, eugenol, iodine, formalin, phenol, and other disinfectants. Methyl methacrylate monomer was identified as an irritant and allergen in the later part of this period. Investigations from 1975 to 1985 indicated that disinfectants and detergents were still important causes of dermatoses, whereas reactions to proca

Carpal tunnel syndrome - an occupational hazard facing dentistry.

BACKGROUND: The authors wished to evaluate the comprehensive literature on carpal tunnel syndrome to discover work specific to carpal tunnel syndrome among dentists in order to determine whether there is any correlation with dentists having a higher prevalence of its occurrence. METHODS: A review of dental literature involving carpal tunnel syndrome was undertaken. Details appearing in the literature before 1995 was reviewed in a comprehensive manner and the literature after 1995 were reviewed electronically. RESULTS: The prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome is higher in dental professionals

Occupational health problems in modern dentistry: a review.

Despite numerous technical advances in recent years, many occupational health problems still persist in modern dentistry. These include percutaneous exposure incidents (PEI); exposure to infectious diseases (including bioaerosols), radiation, dental materials, and noise; musculoskeletal disorders; dermatitis and respiratory disorders; eye injuries; and psychological problems. PEI remain a particular concern, as there is an almost constant risk of exposure to serious infectious agents. Strategies to minimise PEI and their consequences should continue to be employed, including sound infection co

Occupational exposures to chemicals in dentistry: A scoping review.

The dental workforce comprises a variety of professions, most of which are predominantly occupied by women. Dental workers can be exposed to numerous toxic chemicals such as mercury, methacrylate polymers, and silica. This scoping review aims to synthesize the scientific literature on quantified chemical exposures and to identify research gaps in occupational chemical hazards faced by dental professionals. This review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute approach and PRISMA-ScR guidelines, using three concepts to search PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science: workers, dental care, and chemicals. S

Occupational hazards of dentistry. A review of literature from 1990.

A brief survey of the scientific and clinical literature (1990-present) on occupational hazards in dentistry is presented. The hazards identified are associated with chemical and biological agents. Yet, dentistry is a relatively safe profession. Other adverse health risks arise as new technologies and materials are developed. However, once identified and recognized as a risk, new guidelines, precautions and protocols are rapidly instituted to greatly reduce or even eliminate the occupational hazard.

Occupational disease in dentistry and chronic exposure to trace anesthetic gases.

A mail survey of 30,650 dentists and 30,547 chairside assistants grouped according to occupational exposure to inhalation anesthetic and sedatives in the dental operatory indicated increased general health problems and reproductive difficulties among respondents exposed to anesthetics. For male dentists who were heavily exposed to anesthetics, the increase in liver disease was 1.7-fold, kidney disease was 1.2-fold, and neurological disease was 1.9-fold. For wives of male dentists who were heavily exposed to anesthetics, the increase in spontaneous abortion rate was 1.5-fold. Among female chair

Prevention of Occupational Hazards Due to Asbestos Exposure in Dentistry. A Proposal from a Panel of Experts.

Asbestos in all its forms is a Group 1 material agent with proven carcinogenic effects in the human being since 1977. Exposure to asbestos can be considered unsafe. The use of asbestos in the field of dentistry had a common use in the manufacture of dental prostheses in the 1960s and 1970s. Taking into account the long induction period of this agent and the plausibility for being a risk factor in dentistry, the objective of this study is to propose a plan for the prevention of occupational risks due to asbestos exposure in dentistry by means of the contribution of a panel of experts. An Expert

Testing the Level of Agreement between Two Methodological Approaches of the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) for Occupational Health Practice-An Exemplary Application in the Field of Dentistry.

BACKGROUND: The Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) is used for the risk assessment of workplace-related activities. Thus far, the paper and pen method (RULA-PP) has been predominantly used for this purpose. In the present study, this method was compared with an RULA evaluation based on kinematic data using inertial measurement units (RULA-IMU). The aim of this study was, on the one hand, to work out the differences between these two measurement methods and, on the other, to make recommendations for the future use of the respective method on the basis of the available findings. METHODS: For th

Noise levels in dental school clinics.

UNLABELLED: Prolonged exposure to noise is a little-investigated occupational hazard in dentistry. There is anecdotal evidence suggesting that noise levels in four student clinics at the School of Dentistry are higher than the current occupational noise level guidelines in New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom, which suggest that levels should not exceed 85 dB (A) over a duration of 8 hours. The objectives of this study were to (1) measure the noise levels in the student clinics, and (2) determine whether they exceed current guidelines for occupational noise levels. METHOD: A noise le

Occupational contact allergy to glyoxal.

Glyoxal is a dialdehyde that is used as a disinfectant in health care and dentistry work. Allergic contact dermatitis from glyoxal has been described in these occupations. We analysed our patient data from 1998 to 2004 for allergic reactions to glyoxal. 20 patients had allergic reactions to glyoxal on patch testing. 5 of these patients worked in dentistry and 4 of them had present exposure to glyoxal. 9 patients were machinists without obvious exposure to glyoxal. A grinder with work-related facial dermatitis is described in detail. The chemical analysis of air samples from his workplace revea

Magnification in a restorative dental practice: from loupes to microscopes.

Dentistry requires precise motor skills guided by keen visual acuity. Many options are available to improve visual acuity--from simple loupes to surgical microscopes. Each has inherent advantages and limitations, but they all help improve precision beyond unaided vision. Data suggests that every dental professional is at risk for an occupational musculoskeletal injury. Clearly, there is a correlation between seeing clearly and maintaining good posture. Using the appropriate visual enhancement should be considered for all dental professionals to make the practice of dentistry more precise, easi

A diagnostic and therapeutic challenge involving a case of dysphagia in association with cervical osteophytosis and a dental pain.

Herein, presenting a case of a 42-year-old female with the chief complaint of dysphagia. The problem was assumed to be of dental origin, due to the onset of dental pain followed by dysphagia. A cervical radiograph revealed the presence of osteophytic lipping which proved to be the cause of dysphagia. Confusing and overlapping disease entities showing similar symptoms need thorough investigation. Dysphagia related to cervical spondylosis may have a direct connection with the person's occupation. Dentistry is considered a potentially hazardous occupation with regard to musculoskeletal disorders.
