Occupational nerve injuries.

Occupational nerve injuries span a broad array of pathologies and contribute toward functional limitation, disability, and economic impact. Early and accurate recognition, treatment, and management of workplace factors rely on a thorough understanding of the anatomic and biomechanical factors that drive nerve injury. This review explores the interplay between anatomy, biomechanics, and nerve pathology common to occupational nerve injury and provides the treating physician with a rational, evidence-based approach to diagnosis and to occupational aspects of management. Assessment of potential oc

Occupational injuries in Tehran.

As the first step in evaluation of the magnitude of the occupational injuries (OIs) in our community, we focused on hospital records of more than 8400 hospitalized trauma patients in six large university hospitals during 13 months of data gathering process. Fourteen percent of 8426 trauma patients had OIs (1180 cases) and 95% of them were male. Adults 19-39 years comprised 63% of the patients. Eleven percent of the patients were 18 years old or younger. Construction workers (26%), simple workers (26%), and industrial workers (17%) comprised nearly 70% of the OIs. Falls (39%) and striking by bl

Occupational open globe injuries.

PURPOSE: Occupational ocular trauma is an important cause of acquired monocular blindness in a rapidly industrialising country like India. Knowledge of the epidemiology of occupational eye injuries is essential to formulate viable industrial safety measures. METHOD: We retrospectively reviewed all patients with occupational open globe injuries between 1994 and 1998. We documented the circumstances of the injuries, their clinical findings and the use of appropriate protective eyewear at the time of the injury. The visual acuity 6 months after the injury was the final outcome measure. RESULTS:

[Injuries in occupational accidents].

Evaluation of 3,096 accidents occurred during occupational activity in industry reveals the following results: most of the injuries of men are more serious than these of women. Ranking the injured parts of the body shows that injuries of the hand are most frequent. Moreover ranking the injured parts of the body as well as the nature of injuries reveals that there are notable differences between the two sexes.

Epidemiology of Occupational Electrical Injuries.

Electrical injuries are an uncommon but very destructive type of burn, with serious complications and disabilities for the victims. This study was conducted due to the importance of understanding the epidemiology of electrical accidents in planning to prevent their occurrence. This is a retrospective cross-sectional study that was performed on patients with electrical burns referred to Shahid Motahari Educational and Medical Center from 2017 to 2018. Patients' information was entered in the researcher-made information registration form, including demographic and accident-related information. I

Workers' compensation insurance and occupational injuries.

OBJECTIVES: Although compensation for occupational injuries and diseases is guaranteed in almost all nations, countries vary greatly with respect to how they organize workers' compensation systems. In this paper, we focus on three aspects of workers' compensation insurance in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries - types of systems, employers' funding mechanisms, and coverage for injured workers - and their impacts on the actual frequencies of occupational injuries and diseases. METHODS: We estimated a panel data fixed effect model with cross-country OECD and

Adolescent occupational injuries: Texas, 1990-1996.

BACKGROUND: A comprehensive surveillance system for occupational injuries to adolescents does not exist in Texas, as in most states. Therefore, the magnitude, severity, nature, and source of injuries to working adolescents have not been well described in Texas. METHODS: The investigators used three data sources to investigate work-related injuries and deaths in Texas: (1) Texas Workers' Compensation Commission (TWCC) claims data from 1991 through April 1996; (2) 1993 TWCC/Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Annual Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses; and (3) work-related fatalities ide

Fatal occupational injuries--United States, 2005.

Data from the annual Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI), collected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), provide information on fatal occupational injuries that occur in the United States. CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) uses CFOI data to support research and evaluation activities related to the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA), a partnership between the public and private sectors to encourage workplace safety and health research. Since 1992, when BLS first introduced CFOI, BLS has annually reported data on fatal occupational injurie

Occupational spinal cord injury: demographic and etiologic differences from non-occupational injuries.

Most spinal cord injuries (SCIs) are the result of motor vehicle accidents (MVAs). There are no published reports specifically addressing SCIs that occur in the workplace. We report a cohort survey study examining the frequency and etiology of SCI in the workplace. Through a cooperative program, an evaluation of all SCIs seen in Colorado during a 5 1/2-year period (January 1, 1986 through June 6, 1991) is presented. We report a detailed analysis of specific data of all SCIs occurring in the workplace. There were a total of 566, with 74 (13.1%) due to injuries that occurred during the course of

Occupational Injuries in Musicians: A Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: The U.S. Department of Defense employs more musicians than any other organization in the USA with over 6,000 musicians employed. Musculoskeletal pathologies, behavioral health disorders, hearing loss, and dystonias account for the majority of reasons a musician seek medical care. The aim of this study is to review recent medical literature documenting occupational hazards in musicians. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Authors performed a literature review of publications related to musician performance-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs) and performance-related pain (PRP), behaviora

Occupational injuries among emergency medical services personnel.

BACKGROUND: Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel treat 22 million patients a year in the United States, yet little is known of their injury risks. OBJECTIVES: To describe the epidemiology of occupational injuries among EMS personnel, calculate injury rates, and compare the findings with those for other occupational groups. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of injury records kept by two urban agencies. The agencies submitted all 617 case reports for three periods between January 1, 1998, and July 15, 2002. The agency personnel worked an estimated 2,829,906 hours during the study

Fatal occupational injuries in a southern state.

Fatal occupational injuries were studied using data from medical examiners' reports in North Carolina for the years 1977-1991. Cases were defined as deaths due to accidents or homicide at the workplace, and populations at risk were estimated from the 1980 and 1990 US Censuses. Mortality rate ratios and proportionate mortality ratios were used as measures of association, and the population attributable risk percentage was used as an indicator of the burden of injury. Standard weights for direct age-adjustment of rates were obtained from the total state workforce. There were 2,524 eligible death

Occupational injuries among North Carolina migrant farmworkers.

A population-based cross-sectional study of occupational injuries among a random sample of 287 migrant farmworkers demonstrated frequent obstacles to health care; 65% (11/17) of the more seriously injured subjects did not receive prompt care or never received care. Subjects not receiving prompt care were twice as likely to have incomplete recovery. Employers covered medical expenses for only 5/13 (38%) of the injured workers, and only 3/15 were compensated for lost work. This study indicates that comprehensive Workers' Compensation coverage is urgently needed in North Carolina.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize occupational injuries of aquaculture workers in Washington State. METHODS: We reviewed accepted Washington State workers' compensation claims from January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2014.
