[Emerging aspects of occupational stress].

Work stress is caused by excessive demands which foster individuals to give prompt cognitive and behavioral answers. When these solicitations exceed the possibilities of the subject to comply, non-physiological reactions may follow, including emotional, neurovegetative and behavioral changes. If adverse stimuli persist, transient alterations form syndromes such as depression, phobic syndromes, anxiety syndromes, hypertension, heart disease, eating disorders, drug addiction, and so on. The authors examine specific stressful working areas causing illnesses in workers such as the burnout syndrome

[Occupational medicine insight into the problem of occupational stress in the construction industry].

According to the present study, in addition to the high accident rate, work in the building trade is characterized by intense muscle strain and constrained physical posture. In bricklaying, for example, a worker moves by hand up to seven tons of stone per shift. Consequently, various health complaints occur far more frequently in this occupation than in the other occupational groups, for instance, back complaints (71%), severe fatigue (58%), pain in the arms and hands (42%), headache (40%) and leg pain (34%). The most complained of factors include effects of the weather (74%), draft (50%), noi

Relationship of occupational and non-occupational stress with smoking in automotive industry workers.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is the second cause of death and first cause of preventable mortality worldwide. Smoking in the workplace is particularly concerning. Smoking-free workplaces decrease the risk of exposure of non-smoking personnel to cigarette smoke. Recent studies have mostly focused on the effect of daily or non-occupational stressors (in comparison with occupational stress) on prevalence of smoking. Occupational stress is often evaluated in workplaces for smoking cessation or control programs, but the role of non-occupational stressors is often disregarded in this respect. MATERIALS

The Effect of Personality on Occupational Stress in Veterinary Surgeons.

Statistics show that veterinary surgeons are in one of the professions with the highest suicide rates. This indicates the sector has significant well-being issues, with high levels of occupational stress and burnout. Previous research has focused on environmental factors in isolation, overlooking the influence of personality. This study aimed to establish that personality is a better predictor of occupational stress than environment. UK veterinary surgeons (n=311) completed an online survey composed of three questionnaires; the NEO Five-Factor Inventory, the Maslach Burnout Inventory, and the

[Noise--a stress factor in occupational and other environments].

The effects of noise on health can be divided into aural effects and extraaural effects. The following review describes - after some historical remarks - first the physical and technical basis of noise analysis. The definition of "equivalent continuous sound level" (Lm) and "rating sound level" (Lr) is given. Extraaural noise effects mainly come from the environment (traffic noise, construction noise on building sites). One must distinguish physical and vegetative reactions. An important extraaural effect is the disturbance of sleep. The objectivation and quantification of extraaural effects o

An exploration of district nurses' perception of occupational stress.

Many studies in nurse occupational stress have been carried out on high-dependency areas in general nursing, while community nursing has been neglected. District nurses, however, appear to be under increasing pressure, especially in the light of recent NHS reforms. This study aimed to explore district nurses' experiences in relation to the range and severity of stressful work-related events encountered in district nursing practice. The study was undertaken in a Yorkshire community healthcare NHS trust, with a convenience sample of 50 qualified district nurses, of which 38 successfully complete

This cross-sectional study aimed to explore the associations among occupational factors, stress, and HTN in welders. Methods: 2,575 welders were recruited. Demographic, occupational data and occupational stress were collected. Regression analyses and path analysis were used to examine associations and mediating effects. Results: Monthly income was inversely linked to HTN (OR=0.80), whereas longer working service (OR=1.20), confined space work (OR=1.64), shift work (O

Occupational stress and constructive thinking: health and job satisfaction.

BACKGROUND: Occupational stress is associated with specific situations, characteristics of the work environment, and individual perceptions and reactions in the context of the workplace, but many nursing studies of occupational stress have tended to analyse aspects related to the job itself. In Brazil nursing is acknowledged as a stressful occupation whose stresses are generally associated with the job itself, while the effects of personal characteristics on an individual's response to occupational stress are dismissed. AIMS: The aim of this paper is to describe: (1) occupational stress, job
