Melioidosis in Papua New Guinea and Oceania.

Melioidosis has only been sporadically reported throughout Melanesia and the Pacific region since the first report from Guam in 1946; therefore, its contribution to the disease burden in this region is largely unknown. However, the outcome of a small number of active surveillance programs, serological surveys, and presumptive imported cases identified elsewhere provide an insight into its epidemiology and potential significance throughout the region. Both clinical cases and environmental reservoirs have been described from the rural district of Balimo in the Western Province of Papua New Guine

Spirometra infections in humans in Asia and Oceania.

The genus Spirometra (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) is a group of tapeworms distributed worldwide and includes important species that cause sparganosis and spirometrosis in humans. Traditionally, it has been accepted that non-proliferative sparganosis is caused by Spirometra erinaceieuropaei and proliferative sparganosis by Sparganum proliferum. However, recent molecular studies have revealed that the species present in Asia are Spirometra mansoni and the recently described Spirometra asiana, not S. erinaceieuropaei endemic to Europe. It is questionable whether Spa. proliferum is a valid specie

Tetra- and tribromophenoxyanisoles in marine samples from Oceania.

Some methoxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (MeO-BDEs) are known halogenated natural products (HNPs) and are frequently detected in higher organisms of the marine environment. In this study we demonstrate that a prominent MeO-BDE, previously detected in marine mammals from Australia, is identical to 3,5-dibromo-2-(2',4'dibromo)phenoxyanisole (BC-3, 6-MeO-BDE 47). Up to 1.9 mg/ kg of 6-MeO-BDE 47 was present in cetaceans from Australia, 0.2-0.3 mg/kg in two crocodile eggs from Australia, but concentrations of 1 or 2 orders of magnitude lower were found in shark liver oil from NewZealand an

Asia Oceania Professional Education and Training in Clinical Sexology.

Objective: Despite the World Health Organization's 2002 call for competency-based sexology training worldwide, the Asia-Oceania region lacks a systematic overview of its professional education landscape. While Europe and North America have established mature certification systems, no integrated regional mapping has been conducted. Embedded in the World Association for Sexual Health (WAS) Professional Education in Sexology Committee (PES) global project, this study examines program characteristics, regulatory frameworks, and clinical-practice challenges across Australia, Taiwan, Mainland China,

Guideline for the Diagnosis and Management of Heritable IFNAR1 Deficiency in Oceania.

Autosomal recessive interferon alpha and beta receptor subunit 1 (IFNAR1) deficiency is a rare and heritable inborn error of immunity (IEI) predisposing individuals to severe and life-threatening viral infections. It is more common in people of Western Polynesian ancestry, with estimates of around one in six thousand live births affected, due to being homozygous for or having two copies of the regionally relevant pathogenic IFNAR1 variant c.1156G>T, p.Glu386*. IFNAR1 deficiency confers an increased risk of severe and life-threatening infections caused by naturally circulating viruses including

Epidemiology of cervical cancer and HPV infection in Asia and Oceania.

Cancer will continue to be a major source of morbidity and mortality globally during the foreseeable future. Human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cancer is now a serious problem in both women and men. The most common HPV-related cancer is cervical cancer in females and oropharyngeal cancer in males. Eastern Africa has a high age-standardized incidence of HPV-related cancers, followed in order by Southern Africa, Central Africa, and then the rest of Africa. Among Asian and Oceania countries, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Indonesia, Maldives, and Myanmar have extremely high age-standard

Distribution of rickettsioses in Oceania: past patterns and implications for the future.

Rickettsioses present a threat to human health worldwide, but relatively little is known on their epidemiology and ecology in Oceania. These bacteria are the cause of potentially fatal febrile illnesses in humans (categorized into scrub typhus, typhus group and spotted fever group rickettsioses). They are transmitted by arthropod vectors such as ticks, mites, fleas and lice, which are associated with vertebrate host animals including rodents and companion animals. We conducted a search in the scientific and grey literature of Rickettsia spp. and Orientia tsutsugamushi within the Oceania region

Emerging zoonotic encephalitis viruses: lessons from Southeast Asia and Oceania.

The last decade of the 20th Century saw the introduction of an unprecedented number of encephalitic viruses emerge or spread in the Southeast Asian and Western Pacific regions (Mackenzie et al, 2001; Solomon, 2003a). Most of these viruses are zoonotic, either being arthropod-borne viruses or bat-borne viruses. Thus Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), a mosquito-borne flavivirus, has spread through the Indonesian archipelago to Papua New Guinea (PNG) and to the islands of the Torres Strait of northern Australia, to Pakistan, and to new areas in the Indian subcontinent; a strain of tick-borne enc

The Asia-Oceania consensus: Definitions and diagnostic criteria for sarcopenic obesity.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop consensus definitions and diagnostic criteria for sarcopenic obesity tailored to Asia-Oceania populations, a condition characterized by reduced skeletal muscle mass and function with excess adipose tissue. METHODS: Experts from various fields formed a working group under the Asia-Oceania Association for the Study of Obesity (AOASO) and the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics Asia/Oceania Region (IAGG-AOR). The group convened four meetings, employing the Delphi technique to achieve consensus on diagnostic criteria and manageme

The need for pre-emptive control strategies for mpox in Asia and Oceania.

INTRODUCTION: The transmission dynamics of the recent mpox outbreak highlights the lack of infrastructure available to rapidly respond to novel STI outbreaks, of which Asia and Oceania remains particularly susceptible. Here, we simulate outbreaks in this setting and propose the use of pre-emptive vaccination within the men who have sex with men (MSM) community before the arrival and establishment of the virus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using data driven heterogeneous sexual contact networks, we simulated outbreaks of mpox in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Sydney. An individual based SEIR compartmenta

Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH) in Oceania, Central America, and the Caribbean.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and its progressive form, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, are expanding across Australia, Central America, and the Caribbean, driven by obesity, diabetes, and social disadvantage. The authors synthesize contemporary epidemiology, highlighting rising prevalence, projected surges in advanced disease and mortality, and heterogeneity by most relevant sociodemographic characteristics. They outline pragmatic, resource-adaptable care pathways that begin with Fibrosis-4 in primary care and escalate to elastography or direct fib

Neglected tropical diseases of Oceania: review of their prevalence, distribution, and opportunities for control.

Among Oceania's population of 35 million people, the greatest number living in poverty currently live in Papua New Guinea (PNG), Fiji, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands. These impoverished populations are at high risk for selected NTDs, including Necator americanus hookworm infection, strongyloidiasis, lymphatic filariasis (LF), balantidiasis, yaws, trachoma, leprosy, and scabies, in addition to outbreaks of dengue and other arboviral infections including Japanese encephalitis virus infection. PNG stands out for having the largest number of cases and highest prevalence for most of these NTDs. H

Towards Sustainable Environmental Quality: Priority Research Questions for the Australasian Region of Oceania.

Environmental challenges persist across the world, including the Australasian region of Oceania, where biodiversity hotspots and unique ecosystems such as the Great Barrier Reef are common. These systems are routinely affected by multiple stressors from anthropogenic activities, and increasingly influenced by global megatrends (e.g., the food-energy-water nexus, demographic transitions to cities) and climate change. Here we report priority research questions from the Global Horizon Scanning Project, which aimed to identify, prioritize, and advance environmental quality research needs from an A

Antimicrobial sensitivity trends and virulence genes in Shigella spp. from the Oceania region.

Shigella is a common cause of diarrhoea in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and other Oceania countries. However, little is known about the strains causing infection. Archived Shigella isolates (n = 72) were obtained from research laboratories in PNG and reference laboratories in Australia. Shigella virulence genes were detected by PCR, and antimicrobial susceptibility was determined by disk diffusion. The ipaH virulence gene was present in all 72 isolates. The prevalence of other virulence genes was variable, with ial, invE, ipaBCD, sen/ospD3 and virF present in 60% of isolates and set1A and set1B gene
