Cytotoxicity, mutagenicity and acute oral toxicity of aqueous Ocotea minarum leaf extracts.

Ocotea minarum (Nees & Mart.) Mez., a native species of Brazil, is used in the treatment of infections and oxidative stress; however, there is no scientific evidence of its toxicological characteristics. We assessed the cytotoxicity, mutagenic activity, and acute oral toxicity of the aqueous extract isolated from O. minarum leaves. The cytotoxicity of this extract was evaluated in tumour and non-tumour cell lines, while the Ames test with a Salmonella Typhimurium was used to determine the mutagenic activity. Wistar rats received a single 2 g/kg dose as part of an LD50 toxicity assessment. Our

First report of the effect of Ocotea elegans essential oil on Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus.

Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus is responsible for reducing animal welfare, causing a drop in productive performance and transmitting hemoparasites. The main strategy of tick control is application of synthetic acaricides. However, parasite resistance to these compounds is a major concern. Therefore, the acaricidal and repellent in vitro effect of the Ocotea elegans essential oil on larvae and adult females of R. (B.) microplus were evaluated. The larval packet test (LPT), larval repellency test (RT) and adult immersion test (AIT) were performed. The essential oil was analyzed by gas chrom

Use and health effects of herbal medicine Ocotea guianensis during pregnancy in French Guiana.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Ocotea guianensis Aubl. leaves, in Creole fey darjan ("silver leaves") are frequently cited by women in French Guiana for childbirth related practices. Although this use has been described in several ethnographic studies, the frequency of use of this plant has not been quantified yet. Moreover, beyond alarming anecdotes, the profile of users, the ways in which leaves are used during pregnancy, and its influence on childbirth and the immediate postpartum period remained to be determined. Our main objective was thus to estimate the frequency of O. guianensis use a

Enhancement of the antibiotic activity mediated by the essential oil of Ocotea odorifera (VELL) ROWHER and safrole association.

In a recent study, our research group demonstrated that the essential oil of Ocotea odorifera (EOOO) and its major compound safrole potentiated the action fluoroquinolones, modulating bacterial resistance possibly due to direct inhibition of efflux pumps. Thus, in the present study, we investigated whether these treatments could enhance the activity of gentamicin and erythromycin against multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. The EOOO was extracted by hydrodistillation, and the phytochemical analysis was performed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The antibiotic-enhancin
