[Calcifying odontogenic cyst. A clinical case].

The calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) is a rare lesion that involves the jaws which, at times, may evolve into a solid, benign, tumor-like mass. There is no significant sex predilection, but it is probably more common in later life. The diagnosis is base only on histologic examination that represents, in the best of cases, the only way to differentiate the COC from other pathologies. Such lesions include: odontogenic cyst, residual cyst, globulomaxillary cyst, lateral periodontal cyst, ameloblastoma (multicystic and unicystic), odontogenic mixoma, and still with calcifying odontogenic epitheli

Calcifying odontogenic cyst of the maxilla.

Large cystic lesions of the maxillary sinus may initially manifest with malocclusion, cosmetic deformity, or both. Their origin may be odontogenic or nonodontogenic. Proper diagnosis of these cysts immeasurably aids in adequate (nonmutilating) treatment. A recent case of a calcifying and keratinizing odontogenic cyst that initially manifested as a facial mass exemplifies the need for adequate clinical and histological diagnosis to ensure appropriate treatment. Fewer than 35 cases have been reported since the original description in 1962.

Characteristics of calcifying odontogenic cyst in Taiwanese.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) is a rare type of odontogenic cyst. This retrospective study analyzed the clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic features of COC in Taiwanese. METHODS: Ten cases of COC in 2 male and 8 female patients with a mean age of 29 years (range, 11 to 48 years) treated from January 1985 to December 2002 were included. Microscopic slides, clinical histories, and radiographic features of these 10 COC cases were reviewed and analyzed. RESULTS: COCs occurred in the maxilla in 3 cases and in the mandible in 7 cases. COCs were associated with i

Radiographic characteristics of the calcifying odontogenic cyst.

4 additional cases of calcifying odontogenic cysts (COC) were reported, together with the radiographic interpretation of 138 cases from the literature. From the review of the literature and of our own cases, the root resorption is one of the most common diagnostic findings as is cystic radiolucency accompanied by radiopacities. Other radiographic characteristics, such as loculation, tooth divergency and bone resorption were emphasized.

[Calcifying odontogenic cyst: apropos of 5 cases].

With reference to 5 personal cases involving the mandible 3 times and the lower gum twice, the authors recall the principal characteristics of calcified odontogenic cysts: very little clinical manifestation frequently limited to simple tumefaction, well bounded radiological image with low density, cyst with an epithelial border comprized of calcification and ghost cells. Calcified odontogenic cysts which have a definite morphological likeness to Malherbe's epithelioma, also have the same benigh course as the latter.

Calcifying odontogenic cyst: a detailed international multicentric study.

OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the histopathological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural characteristics of a large series of calcifying odontogenic cysts (COCs). STUDY DESIGN: This was a multicenter cross-sectional retrospective study of seven oral pathology department laboratories from four countries. Clinical, demographic, and radiographic data of the patients were collected. Histopathological, immunohistochemical, and microstructural analyses were based on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues. All variables were described, and associations were analyzed using Pearson's chi-square and

Ameloblastomatous calcifying odontogenic cyst: a rare histological variant.

The calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) occurs mainly as an intraosseous lesion in mandible or maxilla, but the peripheral variation of COC has also been reported. The confusion regarding its nature as cyst or tumour has not been resolved and a vast diversity has been noted in clinicopathological aspects of COC. We report a case of COCs with minimal mural ameloblastomatous proliferation in a 13-year-old girl, who presented with a painless swelling in the left jaw causing mild facial asymmetry.

Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst Presenting Odontogenic Keratocyst-Like Areas: A Rare Case Report.

An 81-year-old male patient presented with a well-demarcated, unilocular radiolucent lesion in the right mandibular body, identified during a routine radiographic examination. Based on the clinical hypothesis of a residual cyst, enucleation with curettage was performed, and the specimen was submitted for histopathological analysis. Microscopically, the cystic lesion was predominantly lined by ameloblastomatous epithelium with numerous ghost cells and dentinoid. Additionally, other cystic cavities lined by stratified squamous epithelium with corrugated parakeratin were observed in the fibrous c

[The nature of calcifying odontogenic cysts of the jaws].

OBJECTIVE: To clarify the clinicopathological and behavioral spectrum of the so-called calcifying odontogenic cysts (COC). METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 21 cases previously diagnosed as COC was undertaken to evaluate their clinical, radiographic, pathological and behavioral features. RESULTS: The lesions of this series were divided into three groups, including simple cysts, benign and malignant tumors. The cyst group was composed of 16 cases (9 men, 7 women). The age of the patients peaked at the second decade, with a predilection for the premolar region of the jaws. The clinicopatholog

Ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma arising in the background of a calcifying odontogenic cyst.

Ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma (GCOC) is a rare malignant neoplasm, representing 3% of all ghost cell lesions of the jaws. They can arise de novo or from a pre-existing calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) or dentinogenic ghost cell tumour (DGCT). A systematic review of the literature reported only 12 cases of a GCOC arising from a pre-existing COC. This report highlights an additional case of a GCOC arising from a pre-existing COC after 3 years in an adolescent male. The patient initially presented with a painless swelling of the right mandibular corpus. Panoramic radiographic examination show

Calcifying odontogenic cyst presenting as a lateral periodontal cyst--a case report.

We report a case of the calcifying odontogenic cyst occurring on the left anterior mandible of a 41-year-old male with clinical and radiographic features which made it initially to be a lateral periodontal cyst. This unusual presentation of a calcifying odontogenic cyst is discussed and its significance for the clinician is reviewed. A calcifying odontogenic cyst may present some problems for the differential diagnosis both clinically and histopathologically. The differential diagnosis of a lesion occurring in a lateral periodontal location should include the calcifying odontogenic cyst.

Histopathological Spectrum of a Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst With Uncommon Findings.

Calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) is an uncommon lesion accounting for less than 1% of all odontogenic cysts. This pathology commonly affects the anterior jaw and is prevalent in the second to third decades of life, with no sex predilection. The lesion presents with a variable clinical and radiographic presentation, which can simulate other common jaw pathologies. Therefore, histopathological confirmation stands to be diagnostic in COC. The fifth edition classification for jaw tumors of the head and neck by the World Health Organization has summarized the essential diagnostic criteria of COC a

An unusual presentation of calcifying odontogenic cyst with literature review.

The calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) is an uncommon developmental odontogenic cyst, the oral counterpart of Malherbe's cutaneous calcifying epithelioma (pilomatricoma). This article presents two unique cases of calcifying odontogenic cysts each exhibiting distinctive histopathological features and its literature review. One case with an unexpected finding of cholesterol granuloma (CG), a rare occurrence in non-inflammatory cysts within an unusual location between two maxillary central incisors. One more instance involves the presence of a compound odontome in conjunction with COC. The cases u

Ghost cells in calcifying odontogenic cyst express enamel-related proteins.

The so-called ghost cell is a unique cell type occurring in a variety of odontogenic and non-odontogenic lesions. However, the true nature of ghost cells has not been determined. In the present study, we examined the immunoreactivity of ghost cells in calcifying odontogenic cysts and dermal calcifying epitheliomas, with antibodies against amelogenin, enamelin, sheath protein (sheathlin) and enamelysin, in an attempt to clarify the nature of this unique cell. The cytoplasm of ghost cells in calcifying odontogenic cysts demonstrated distinct immunolocalization of the enamel-related proteins, whi

Calcifying odontogenic cyst associated with compound odontoma - A rare entity.

Calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) or Gorlin's cyst categorized as a distinct entity by Gorlin et al. in 1962. It is a rare benign developmental cystic lesion that accounts for less than 1% of all odontogenic cysts. It can occur in association with various types of odontogenic tumors such as odontomas. COC is a hybrid lesion of the jaw presenting a manifold variety of clinical behaviors and histopathological characteristics including cystic, solid (neoplastic), and aggressive forms. COC exhibits diversity in terms of its clinical presentations, histopathologic features, and biological behavior.

Calcifying odontogenic cyst associated with odontoma: report of two cases.

The calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) is a nonneoplastic lesion whose possible association with other odontogenic lesions such as odontoma has been considered improbable by some authors. This paper reports two cases of true odontoma found concurrently with the COC.
