Squamous odontogenic tumor: diagnosis and management.

The squamous odontogenic tumor (SOT) is a rare, benign, locally infiltrative neoplasm of the jaws that appears to originate from the rests of Malassez. It has been confused with other pathologic entities such as ameloblastomas, carcinomas, and fibromas and clinically may resemble localized periodontal disease. The tumor is often asymptomatic, although it can present with symptoms of pain and tooth mobility. A characteristic radiographic appearance is that of a triangular-shaped or semi-circular lucency associated with the roots of erupted teeth. Histologically, the tumor is characterized by th

Primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma arising from keratocystic odontogenic tumor.

Primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma (PIOSCC) is a rare lesion that almost exclusively occurs in the jaws. Most PIOSCCs originate from epithelial lining of odontogenic cysts, especially from radicular, residual, and dentigerous cysts. A few cases have been shown to arise from keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOTs). This is a report of a case of PIOSCC that arose from an untreated keratocystic odontogenic tumor within a period of less than 2 years of first diagnosis. Upon malignant transformation, the tumor changed from a cystic to a solid pattern and acquired an infiltrative growth pa

Exceptional Evolution of a Squamous Odontogenic Tumor in the Jaw: Molecular Approach.

A squamous odontogenic tumor (SOT) is an epithelial locally benign neoplasia derived from the periodontium of the jaws. It is considered a lesion of low incidence. Predominantly, it affects the mandible, although both jaw bones may be involved. Here, we discuss the malignant clinical evolution of an SOT lesion in an 80-year-old female patient. The patient exhibited an expansive triangular lesion at the inferior right quadrant. Surgery was performed and an SOT was diagnosed (2019). Two years after, the lesion grew, and the analysis of the biopsy revealed SOT malignization with pleomorphic atypi

Squamous Odontogenic Tumor: Review of the Literature and Report of a New Case.

PURPOSE: Squamous odontogenic tumor (SOT) is a rare, benign, locally infiltrative odontogenic tumor of the gnathic bones. It is composed of islands of bland, well-differentiated squamous epithelium of varying shape and size. Because of histologic overlap, SOT has often been overdiagnosed as ameloblastoma and squamous cell carcinoma. It thus becomes important to understand the clinical, radiologic, histopathologic, and treatment characteristics of this tumor. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using the PubMed and Google Scholar databases, we searched for reported cases of SOT published in the English-lan

Squamous Cell Carcinoma Arising in a Squamous Odontogenic Tumor of the Maxilla: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Squamous odontogenic tumor (SOT) is an exceedingly rare, benign epithelial odontogenic tumor showing squamous differentiation. It is composed of variably sized and shaped islands of cytologically bland, mature squamous epithelium within a fibrous stroma. In this report, we present a rare transformation of a squamous odontogenic tumor (SOT) of the maxilla into a well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with involvement of the pterygoid plates. To the best of our knowledge, only two cases of malignant transformation of SOT has been reported in the literature. Herein, we seek to report t

Squamous odontogenic tumor-like proliferations in radicular cysts: a clinicopathologic study of forty-two cases.

INTRODUCTION: Squamous odontogenic tumor-like epithelial islands occurring in the walls of odontogenic cysts are histologically identical to the squamous odontogenic tumor (SOT). Microscopically, the squamous odontogenic tumor-like proliferations (SOTLPs) share certain histologic features with SOT, acanthomatous and desmoplastic ameloblastoma, and well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. Little is known about the rarely reported SOTLPs occurring in radicular cysts. The purpose of this study was to define the clinical and histopathologic spectrum of SOTLP in radicular cysts and to investiga

Squamous odontogenic tumor (SOT): a benign neoplasm of the periodontium. A review of 36 reported cases.

True neoplasms are rarely localised to the periodontium. However, early recognition and diagnosis of neoplastic lesions resides within the realm of responsibility of the dentist. In recent years, a number of odontogenic tumors has been described characterized by an occurrence on the gingiva or in the intrabony part of the periodontium. One such neoplasm, the squamous odontogenic tumor (SOT) originally described 20 years ago is now a well-recognized entity localized to the periodontium, be it in the periodontal ligament or in the gingivae. A review of 36 acceptable cases of this tumor published

Primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma in pre-existing keratocystic odontogenic tumor: A case report and literature review.

Primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma (PIOSCC) is a rare type of odontogenic carcinoma that arises within the jaws. PIOSCC has no initial connection with oral mucosa and possibly develops from the residues of the odontogenic epithelium or from an odontogenic cyst or tumor. The diagnosis of PIOSCC can be difficult as it must be differentiated from other odontogenic carcinomas, such as malignant ameloblastoma, from SCCs arising from the overlying oral mucosa, from the primary tumors of the maxillary sinus or nasal mucosa, and from the tumors that have metastasized to the jaws from other p

Squamous odontogenic tumor of the mandible: a case report demonstrating immunoexpression of Notch1, 3, 4, Jagged1 and Delta1.

BACKGROUND: Squamous odontogenic tumor (SOT) is a rare benign odontogenic epithelial neoplasm. A slow-growing painless expansive swelling is the common presenting symptom. Histopathologically, SOT can be easily misdiagnosed as an acanthomatous ameloblastoma. Although Notch receptors and ligands have been shown to play a role in cell fate decisions in ameloblastomas, the role of these cell signaling molecules in SOT is unknown. CASE REPORT: This paper describes a case of SOT affecting the anterior mandible of a 10-year-old Indian female. The patient was treated by local surgical excision and t

Fostering a faster post-operative wound healing process with hyperbaric oxygen therapy in a rare case of squamous odontogenic tumor.

INTRODUCTION: The surgical removal of an intraoral tumor and preventing intraoral wound dehiscence are constant challenges faced by surgeons today. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), the inhalation of 100% oxygen at a greater atmospheric pressure, is often used in cases of wounds to induce a faster wound healing process, alongside other treatment modalities. We report a rare case of squamous odontogenic tumor (SOT) treated with HBOT after being surgically removed to foster an accelerated wound recovery. CASE PRESENTATION: A 39-year-old Asian male presented with an intraoral 3 × 4 cm tumor, acc

Immunostaining of involucrin in odontogenic epithelial tumors and cysts.

An immunoperoxidase method was used to detect involucrin in 47 odontogenic tumors and 35 radicular cysts. Of a total of 40 ameloblastomas, 9 cases were positive for involucrin expression and those positive cases exhibited acanthomatous or follicular patterns. Squamous odontogenic tumors were strongly positive for involucrin, whereas adenomatoid odontogenic tumors gave a negative staining reaction. Involucrin expression in odontogenic tumors was divided into three categories: single cell positive, focally positive, and squamous metaplastic cell positive. Radicular cysts showed a very irregular

Epithelial odontogenic cyst develop either in result od peridental inflammation-radicular cyst, or in result of developmental disturbances in the course of the odontogenesis. The latter are divided into primordial and dentigerous cysts. Some odontogenic cysts are lined with squamous keratotic epithelium -ortho- or parakeratotic type. The latter is characterized by higher recurrence rate and malignant potential. Primary intraosseous carcinoma (PIOC) both keratizing and nonkeratizing might originate in keratocyst. [Clear cell odontogenic carcinoma in connection with squamous epithelial carcinoma. Case report and review of the literature].

One case of a newly described, rare odontogenic tumor is reported. A literature review of 19 cases lends support to the odontogenic origin and metastatic capability, both regionally and distantly, of the clear cell odontogenic tumor. We conclude that this tumor is malignant, with a tendency to recur locally after surgery. It requires an aggressive surgical approach and should be referred to as a clear cell odontogenic carcinoma. In our patient we saw a clear cell odontogenic carcinoma and a squamous cell carcinoma, both with regional lymph node metastasis. The histological differentiation of t

Odontogenic ghost cell tumor: a case report with cytologic findings.

Odontogenic ghost cell tumor is a rare, neoplastic form of calcifying odontogenic cyst (Gorlin cyst) whose cytologic features have not been previously reported. We present a case of odontogenic ghost cell tumor diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB). The aspirate was characterized by (1) tissue fragments with basaloid epithelial cells, (2) "ghost" cells, (3) scattered multinucleated giant cells, (4) rare, eosinophilic, densely hyalinized "dentinoid" material in close association with the basaloid cells, and (5) calcific debris. The aspirate was diagnosed as "consistent with odontoge
