Olfactory perception and olfactory imagery: a multidimensional analysis.

Whether a system of imagery for olfaction exists is currently an unsettled issue. Moreover, the dimensions underlying odor perception have eluded researchers for many years. Two experiments bearing on these issues are presented. In one experiment, a group of 32 undergraduates rated the similarity of pairs of 16 commonplace odorants (e.g., chocolate and leather) they perceived using scratch and sniff stimuli; in another, a different group of 44 undergraduates was asked to imagine and then rate the similarity of the same pairs of odors. Multidimensional scaling of the data suggests that three-di

Distorted olfactory perception: a systematic review.

The sense of smell provides people with valuable input from the chemical environment around them. The human sense of smell generally fails in three ways; one is an intensity reduction and the other two are the quality of changes. Smell disorders can be classified into central or peripheral depending on their origin. Central causes can be related to an area of hyper-functioning brain cells generating this odor perception, thus olfactory distortions have also been observed with epilepsy and migraine. In this paper, we present a review of the current clinical understanding of olfactory distortion

Olfactory networks: from sensation to perception.

Olfactory networks, comprised of sensory neurons and interneurons, detect and process changes in the chemical environment to drive animal behavior. Recent studies combining genetics with behavioral analyses and imaging in worms, flies and mice have revealed new insights into the mechanisms of olfaction. In this discussion, we focus on three interesting findings. First, sensory neuron responses to odor are modulated by neuropeptides. This modulation might serve to extend the range of responses of the sensory neurons and also to integrate internal state information into the chemosensory circuit.

Initial mechanisms basic to olfactory perception.

Animal experimentation has proposed three mechanisms at the olfactory mucosa that may underlie olfactory discrimination. First, the olfactory receptor cells appear selectively tuned to different odorants. Second, in a gas chromatographic-like process, the molecules of different odorants appear to be distributed in different sorption patterns across the mucosal surface. Third, different regions of the mucosa appear to have different selective sensitivities. These three mechanisms could complement each other by together generating a greater number of neural discharge patterns to encode the odora

Distortion of olfactory perception: diagnosis and treatment.

Clinically, olfaction can fail in any of three ways: (i) decreased sensitivity (hyposmia, anosmia) and two types of distortion (dysosmia); (ii) distorted quality of an odorant stimulation (troposmia); (iii) perceived odor when no odorant is present (phantosmia, hallucination). The distortions are usually much more upsetting to a person's quality of life than a simple loss. An ipsilatersal loss of olfactory sensitivity is often identified in the nostril with any type of olfactory distortion. The pathophysiology of a stimulated distortion (troposmia) is likely a decreased number of functioning o

Olfactory perception, cognition, and dysfunction in humans.

The main functions of olfaction relate to finding food, avoiding predators and disease, and social communication. Its role in detecting food has resulted in a unique dual mode sensory system. Environmental odorants are 'smelled' via the external nostrils, while volatile chemicals in food-detected by the same receptors-arrive via the nasopharynx, contributing to flavor. This arrangement allows the brain to link the consequences of eating with a food's odor, and then later to use this information in the search for food. Recognizing an odorant-a food, mate, or predator-requires the detection of c

Right orbitofrontal cortex mediates conscious olfactory perception.

Understanding how the human brain translates sensory impressions into conscious percepts is a key challenge of neuroscience research. Work in this area has overwhelmingly centered on the conscious experience of vision at the exclusion of the other senses--in particular, smell. We hypothesized that the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is a central substrate for olfactory conscious experience because of its privileged physiological role in odor processing. Combining functional magnetic resonance imaging, peripheral autonomic recordings, and olfactory psychophysics, we studied a case of complete anosmi

Measures of human olfactory perception during pregnancy.

Although considerable anecdotal evidence suggests that pregnancy affects olfactory sensitivity, scientific evidence is limited and inconclusive. Whereas hedonic ratings are affected by pregnancy, odor identification is not. The aim of the current study was to examine odor perception in women across pregnancy and in the postpartum period. One hundred nonsmoking women who were pregnant, postpartum, or had never been pregnant were tested on the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT). Intensity ratings and scratch patterns were collected as potential indicators of sensitivity

Reversible obstruction of the olfactory cleft: impact on olfactory perception and nasal patency.

BACKGROUND: Temporary disruption of sensory input can be studied relatively easily for vision or hearing by covering the eyes or ears. In contrast, closing the nostrils affects not only the sense of smell, but also the ability to breathe through the nose and humidify and warm inhaled air. We hypothesized that filling the olfactory cleft (OC) with dissolvable nasal dressing (foam) would temporarily block olfaction while respecting nasal airflow. METHODS: In 30 healthy volunteers, the OC was unilaterally obstructed in a back-to-front fashion. Orthonasal and retronasal olfactory function were te

[Specific anosmia as a principle of olfactory perception].

Specific anosmia, the inability to perceive a specific odor, while olfactory perception is otherwise intact, is known as a rather seldom phenomenon. By testing the prevalence of specific anosmia to 20 different odors in a sample of 1600 people, we were able to estimate the general prevalence of anosmia. This revealed that specific anosmia is not rare at all. In contrast, the general likelihood for specific anosmia approaches 1. In addition, specific anosmia can be very well reversed by "smell training" during the course of 3 months. To summarize, specific anosmia seems to be a rule, not an exc

The effect of emotion and personality on olfactory perception.

It is well established that both the emotional tone of sensory stimuli and the personality characteristics of an individual can bias sensory perception. What has largely been unexplored is whether the current emotional state of an individual has a similar effect, and how it works together with other factors. Here we carry out a comprehensive study to examine how olfactory perception is affected by the emotional tone of the stimuli, and the personality and current emotional state of the individual. Subjects reported experiencing happiness, sadness, negativity/hostility and neutrality when expos

Trigeminal and olfactory synergism in the perception of smell.

In normal subjects olfactory evoked cortical potentials are seen with latencies of 150 m/sec and 350 m/sec. To evaluate the site of potential generators in central nervous pathways olfactory evoked cortical potentials were registered in patients with well-defined lesions of the central nervous system and the maxillary nerve. Absence of the first potential was seen in lesions of the brain-stem and the maxillary nerve. Absence of the second potential was observed in lesions of the frontal cerebral medulla and the temporal cortex. No olfactory potentials were found in circumscribed lesions of the

Sad man's nose: Emotion induction and olfactory perception.

Emotional and olfactory processing is frequently shown to be closely linked both anatomically and functionally. Depression, a disease closely related to the emotional state of sadness, has been shown to be associated with a decrease in olfactory sensitivity. The present study focuses on the state of sadness in n = 31 healthy subjects in order to investigate the specific contribution of this affective state in the modulation of olfactory processing. A sad or indifferent affective state was induced using 2 movies that were presented on 2 separate days. Afterward, chemosensory-evoked potentials w

Nasal airflow engages central olfactory processing and shapes olfactory percepts.

Binding of airborne odour molecules to olfactory receptors at the top of the nasal cavity gives rise to our rich olfactory experience. Whether airflow plays a role in human olfactory perception beyond the transportation of odorants is scantly known. Combining psychophysical measures with strict controls of nasal flow parameters, we demonstrate in four experiments that the perceived intensity of a unilaterally presented odour decreases systematically with the amount of contralateral nasal airflow, in manners that are independent of odour flow rate, nasal pressure, perceived sniff vigour or atte

Olfactory and gustatory perception in adults with long COVID.

INTRODUCTION: Olfactory dysfunction is a common symptom in COVID-19 and Long COVID. However it is unclear how well perceived impairment of olfactory and gustatory dysfunction correlate with the objectively measured intensity of olfactory dysfunction among adults with Long COVID compared to healthy never-SARS-CoV-2-infected and previously infected control cohorts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We recruited 154 participants from an online Long COVID survey (DEFEAT Corona) for in-person examinations. Participants were allocated to three groups: Long COVID (persistent symptoms >4 weeks post-infection, n

Assessment of Olfactory Perception in Individuals with Motion Sickness.

BACKGROUND: Individuals who experience motion sickness (MS) frequently mention the presence of smells in the environment as a factor favoring the occurrence of MS symptoms. The aim of the present work was to compare olfactory function in MS sensitive (MS+) and insensitive (MS-) subjects. METHODS: Olfactory testing included determination of odor detection thresholds, subjective evaluation of the quality (intensity, hedonicity, and familiarity) of three different odorants (limonene, isovaleric acid, and petrol) as well as measures of skin conductance responses to these three odorants. RESULTS:

Gender-Specific Relation Between Olfactory Sensitivity and Disgust Perception.

The perception of disgust is a powerful but yet puzzling emotion, aiming at the prevention of potential microbial pathogens and being directly linked to olfactory processing in its neurophysiological pathways via the anterior insular cortex. In sample of healthy participants with a natural variation in olfactory function, we investigated the relation between olfactory sensitivity and disgust perception. A total of 123 healthy individuals were surveyed with a disgust sensitivity questionnaire. Olfactory threshold was assessed in all participants using the Sniffin' Sticks. Additionally, tactile

Different Olfactory Perception in Heroin Addicts Using Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

INTRODUCTION: Addiction is a mental disorder that has many adverse effects on brain health. It alters brain structure and deteriorates brain functionality. Impairment of brain cognition in drug addiction is illustrated in many previous works; however, olfactory perception in addiction and, in particular, its neuronal mechanisms have rarely been studied. METHODS: In this experiment, we recruited 20 heroin addicts and 20 normal controls of the same sex, age, handedness, and socioeconomic status and compared their brain function while perceiving non-craving odors during the functional magnetic r

Nostril Advantage in Trigeminal/Olfactory Perception and Its Relation to Handedness.

Introduction Few studies investigated nostril-advantage in chemosensory perception, particularly, in relation to handedness. The aim of the present article was therefore to assess whether trigeminal/olfactory perception is altered by handedness. Methods We tested 50 (all right-handed) and 43 (22 left-handed) participants in Studies 1 and 2, respectively. We used binary mixtures of cinnamaldehyde and eucalyptol, in different proportions presented as physical mixtures (the same exact mixture presented birhinally to each nostril) or as a dichorhinic mixtures (different mixtures presented to each
