Peptidoglycan, the sugar-amino acid polymer that composes the bacterial cell wall, requires a significant expenditure of energy to synthesize and is highly immunogenic. To minimize the loss of an energetically expensive metabolite and avoid host detection, bacteria often recycle their peptidoglycan, transporting its components back into the cytoplasm, where they can be used for subsequent rounds of new synthesis. The peptidoglycan-recycling substrate binding protein (SBP) MppA, which is responsible for recycling peptidoglycan fragments in Escherichia coli, has not been annotated for most intra

The most stable regulatory peptides (RP) including the new family of RP (glyprolines) and derivatives of hybrid peptide MEHFPGP are characterized. High ability of glyprolines to penetrate into the blood-stream through the gastrointestinal tract is demonstrated. Antiulcer, antithrombotic and antidiabetic activities of glyprolines were discovered in experiments on white rats. The activity of oligopeptides PGP, PG and GP is compared. Mechanisms of glycoprolines activities and feasibility of their administration with connective tissue food proteins are discussed. Thus, glyprolines are perspective

Bradykinin-potentiating peptides from Bothrops jararaca (Bj) discovered in the early 1960s, were the first natural inhibitors of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). These peptides belong to a large family of snake venom proline-rich oligopeptides (PROs). One of these peptides, Bj-PRO-9a, was essential for defining ACE as effective drug target and development of captopril, an active site-directed inhibitor of ACE used worldwide for the treatment of human arterial hypertension. Recent experimental evidences demonstrated that cardiovascular effects exerted by different Bj-PROs are due to dis

Detection of neurochemicals voltammetrically can be challenging in complex matrices like tissue. Norepinephrine (NE) is a neurotransmitter in the brain and is directly released by the sympathetic nervous system in the periphery. Fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) is an electrochemical technique previously used to detect NE from sympathetic neurons in lymphoid tissues. Mesenteric lymph nodes present a unique challenge to FSCV due to their complex tissue matrix, which includes immune cells and neurons. These cells release various neuropeptides, cytokines, and other chemical signaling molecules,

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to investigate the effects of corn oligopeptides (COPs) on early alcoholic liver injury in rats. A total of 70 Wistar rats were randomly assigned to 7 groups, including a normal control group, 3 alcohol control groups (2.0, 4.0 and 6.0 g/kg/BW ethanol), and 3 COP intervention groups (2.0, 4.0 and 6.0 g/kg/BW ethanol, with 900 mg/kg/BW COPs). The study duration lasted for 4 weeks. Serum markers were assayed, and a histopathological examination was conducted.
RESULTS: We found that the COP treatment prevented the elevation of serum aminotransferase and allevi

According to published data, peptide neurotensin is considered as endogenous antipsychotic agent. A series of oligopeptides have been synthesized based on the proposed active center of neurotensin. These oligopeptides (called neurotensin-like peptides, NLPs) have been studied on behavioral models, in which the functional state of the dopamine system of animals was modified by apomorphine injections. The results of verticalization, stereotypy, and yawning tests revealed NLPs that behave as antagonists of dopamine receptors. Radioligand analysis showed that these peptides compete for specific bi

Kynurenine (kyn) and kynurenic acid (kyna) are well-defined metabolites of tryptophan catabolism collectively known as "kynurenines", which exert regulatory functions in host-microbiome signaling, immune cell response, and neuronal excitability. Kynurenine containing peptides endowed with opioid receptor activity have been isolated from natural organisms; thus, in this work, novel opioid peptide analogs incorporating L-kynurenine (L-kyn) and kynurenic acid (kyna) in place of native amino acids have been designed and synthesized with the aim to investigate the biological effect of these modific

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a significant risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and chronic kidney disease. Wheat oligopeptides (WOPs), small peptide mixtures derived from the enzymatic hydrolysis of wheat protein, contain peptides of varying molecular weights. Although previous studies have shown that plant-derived protein peptides can lower blood pressure, systematic research on WOPs and their antihypertensive mechanisms remains relatively limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antihypertensive efficacy of WOPs kDa and to investigate its mechanisms.
RESULTS: The study found tha

Cutaneous hyperpigmentation is a common disorder due to excess melanin production by the enzyme tyrosinase. The gold standard for treatment is hydroquinone (HQ), which reduces pigmentation through its toxicity to melanocytes rather than via tyrosinase inhibition. We screened an internal library for oligopeptides that inhibited both mushroom and human tyrosinase but showed no cytotoxicity to human melanocytes. We identified two highly active inhibitory sequences, P3 and P4, of 8- and 10-amino-acid-length, respectively. Mushroom tyrosinase inhibition was dose-dependent with IC(50) (half-maximal

Mammalian members of the SLC15 family are electrogenic transporters that utilize the proton-motive force for uphill transport of short chain peptides and peptido-mimetics into a variety of cells. The prototype transporters of this family are PEPT1 (SLC15A1) and PEPT2 (SLC15A2), which mediate the uptake of peptide substrates into intestinal and renal epithelial cells. More recently, other sites of functional expression of the two proteins have been identified such as bile duct epithelium (PEPT1), glia cells and epithelia of the choroid plexus, lung and mammary gland (PEPT2). Both proteins can t

BACKGROUND: Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) occurs in one to three per 1000 live full-term births. Fifteen to twenty percent will die in the postnatal period, and an additional 25 % will develop severe and permanent neuropsychological sequalae. The control of growth and nutritional status in the fetus and neonate is a complex mechanism, in which also hormones produced by adipose tissue, such as adiponectin and leptin are involved. The aim of this study was to measure the levels of adiponectin, leptin and insulin in neonates with HIE at birth and in early postnatal life and comparing them

Diphtheria toxin (DT) is a single polypeptide chain of molecular weight 62,000 with two disulphide bridges. Immunization against diphtheria rests on the stimulation of antibodies against detoxified toxin which also combine with the native toxin. Because the antibodies differ functionally from each other, however, only some of them are able to neutralize toxicity. We have therefore set out to synthesize part of the amino acid sequence of the toxin whose function as a stimulator of antibodies might be less ambiguous, and have chosen the loop of 14 amino acids subtended by the disulphide bridge n

Comparison of oligopeptide maps of several viruses from the tick-borne encephalitis complex revealed considerable similarity between them manifested in the presence of a common oligonucleotide framework. At the same time there are differences between viruses, each of them having its own oligopeptides lacking in other viruses. The viruses under comparison form groups: tick-borne encephalitis viruses proper, Langat and Powassan viruses, Negishi virus, louping-ill virus. Within the group of tick-born encephalitis viruses, neurovirulent strains differ from those with lower neurovirulence. Other va

Oligopeptides usually have high nutritive value and multiple physiological functions. To achieve the highly efficient utilization of feather waste, a feather-degrading bacterium, Pseudomonas otitis, was isolated and used for production of feather oligopeptides. The production potential and characteristics of the produced oligopeptides by H11 were also investigated. The results demonstrated that the optimal initial pH, temperature, fermentation time, and sterilization conditions were 11, 40°C, 24 h, and 121°C for 20 min, respectively. After 24 h of fermentation under the optimal conditions, the
