The Olfactory Transcriptome and Progression of Sexual Maturation in Homing Chum Salmon Oncorhynchus keta.

Reproductive homing migration of salmonids requires accurate interaction between the reception of external olfactory cues for navigation to the spawning grounds and the regulation of sexual maturation processes. This study aimed at providing insights into the hypothesized functional link between olfactory sensing of the spawning ground and final sexual maturation. We have therefore assessed the presence and expression levels of olfactory genes by RNA sequencing (RNAseq) of the olfactory rosettes in homing chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta Walbaum from the coastal sea to 75 km upstream the rivers a

Occurrence and identification of Anisakis spp. (Nematoda: Anisakidae) isolated from chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) in Korea.

The prevalence of infection and the identification of anisakid larvae in chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) from the Namdae River, the east coast of Korea, were investigated. In total, 8,358 larvae were collected from 120 fish samples (male = 58 fish, female = 62 fish) in 2008. Fish samples were collected during October and November 2008. All the chum salmon samples (120/120, 100%) caught were infected with anisakid larvae with a high intensity (69.65 ± 48.58 larvae/host). They were mostly found in muscles (98.00%). Based on the morphological and the molecular analysis of PCR-RFLP and sequencing

Ontogenetic development of gonadotropin-releasing hormone-like immunoreactive neurons in the brain of the chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta.

In the chum salmon, gonadotropin-releasing hormone-immunoreactive (GnRH-ir) cells were first detected in the olfactory placode of embryos at 16 days after fertilization, and then appeared sequentially in the olfactory nerve and the distal part of the forebrain by hatching. Four months after hatching, the terminal nerve was differentiated along the olfactory nerve, and GnRH-ir fibers extended to the hypothalamus and hypophysis. GnRH-ir cells occurred later in the preoptic area in about 1-year-old juveniles. These data suggest that GnRH neurons originate in the olfactory placode and then migrate

Cytophysiology of gonadotropin-releasing-hormone neurons in chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) forebrain before and after upstream migration.

Cytophysiology of gonadotropin-releasing-hormone neurons in chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) was examined before and after upstream migration by an immunocytochemical technique with a specific antiserum to salmon gonadotropin-releasing hormone and an in situ hybridization technique with an oligonucleotide encoding salmon gonadotropin-releasing hormone precursor (pro-salmon gonadotropin- releasing hormone). In the forebrain (olfactory nerve, olfactory bulb, telencephalon, and preoptic area), salmon gonadotropin-releasing hormone-immunoreactive neurons and neurons showing signals for pro-salmon g

Putative Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense acquired from a Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) eaten in France; genomic identification and case report.

We report here a likely case of Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense contracted in France through the consumption of a Pacific salmon imported from Canada. The species diagnosis was made by molecular analysis of two mitochondrial genes (COI & ND3). This case is rather unusual in that D. nihonkaiense has never been reported along the Pacific coast of North America.

Impact of Fish Meal Replacement with Meat Meal on the Growth and Fillet Nutritional Quality of Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus keta).

Rendered animal by-products such as meat meal are promising fish meal alternatives owing to their high protein content; however, they contain little n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA), whose effects on fillet fatty acid quality and endogenous LC-PUFA biosynthesis in chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) remain unclear. We evaluated the growth, fillet fatty acid composition, and hepatic gene expression of chum salmon fed four diets-a control with 50% fish meal (D1), diets with 35% or 20% fish meal and the remainder replaced by meat meal (D2 and D3), and a D3-like diet with reduced f

Ultrastructural Study and Immunohistochemical Characteristics of Mesencephalic Tegmentum in Juvenile Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) Brain After Acute Traumatic Injury.

The ultrastructural organization of the nuclei of the tegmental region in juvenile chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) was examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The dorsal tegmental nuclei (DTN), the nucleus of fasciculus longitudinalis medialis (NFLM), and the nucleus of the oculomotor nerve (NIII) were studied. The ultrastructural examination provided detailed ultrastructural characteristics of neurons forming the tegmental nuclei and showed neuro-glial relationships in them. Neurons of three size types with a high metabolic rate, characterized by the presence of numerous mitoch

Ultrastructural Characteristics of the Juvenile Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) Cerebellum: Interneuron Composition, Neuro-Glial Interactions, Homeostatic Neurogenesis, and Synaptic Plasticity.

Currently, the problem of climate change on Earth is becoming increasingly urgent. These changes are the reason for the increasingly pronounced adaptive differences in different species of fish. A significant gap in ultrastructural data on the organization of the salmon cerebellum was the main motivation for this study's microscopic and ultrastructural analyses using transmission and scanning electron microscopy of the cerebellum of juvenile chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta. The study of the interneuron composition of the cerebellum showed the presence of stellate cells in the molecular layer, pr

Comparative transcriptomics of Atlantic Salmo salar, chum Oncorhynchus keta and pink salmon O. gorbuscha during infections with salmon lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis.

BACKGROUND: Salmon species vary in susceptibility to infections with the salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis). Comparing mechanisms underlying responses in susceptible and resistant species is important for estimating impacts of infections on wild salmon, selective breeding of farmed salmon, and expanding our knowledge of fish immune responses to ectoparasites. Herein we report three L. salmonis experimental infection trials of co-habited Atlantic Salmo salar, chum Oncorhynchus keta and pink salmon O. gorbuscha, profiling hematocrit, blood cortisol concentrations, and transcriptomic response

Post-Traumatic Expressions of Aromatase B, Glutamine Synthetase, and Cystathionine-Beta-Synthase in the Cerebellum of Juvenile Chum Salmon, Oncorhynchus keta.

In adult fish, neurogenesis occurs in many areas of the brain, including the cerebellum, with the ratio of newly formed cells relative to the total number of brain cells being several orders of magnitude greater than in mammals. Our study aimed to compare the expressions of aromatase B (AroB), glutamine synthetase (GS), and cystathionine-beta-synthase (CBS) in the cerebellum of intact juvenile chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta. To identify the dynamics that determine the involvement of AroB, GS, and CBS in the cellular mechanisms of regeneration, we performed a comprehensive assessment of the exp

A Confocal Microscopic Study of Gene Transfer into the Mesencephalic Tegmentum of Juvenile Chum Salmon, Oncorhynchus keta, Using Mouse Adeno-Associated Viral Vectors.

To date, data on the presence of adenoviral receptors in fish are very limited. In the present work, we used mouse recombinant adeno-associated viral vectors (rAAV) with a calcium indicator of the latest generation GCaMP6m that are usually applied for the dorsal hippocampus of mice but were not previously used for gene delivery into fish brain. The aim of our work was to study the feasibility of transduction of rAAV in the mouse hippocampus into brain cells of juvenile chum salmon and subsequent determination of the phenotype of rAAV-labeled cells by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM).

Mechanical Brain Injury Increases Cells' Production of Cystathionine β-Synthase and Glutamine Synthetase, but Reduces Pax2 Expression in the Telencephalon of Juvenile Chum Salmon, Oncorhynchus keta.

The considerable post-traumatic brain recovery in fishes makes them a useful model for studying the mechanisms that provide reparative neurogenesis, which is poorly represented in mammals. After a mechanical injury to the telencephalon in adult fish, lost neurons are actively replaced due to the proliferative activity of neuroepithelial cells and radial glia in the neurogenic periventricular zone. However, it is not enough clear which signaling mechanisms are involved in the activation of adult neural stem cells (aNSC) after the injury (reactive proliferation) and in the production of new neur

Detection and identification of Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense plerocercoids from wild Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) in Japan.

We investigated the risk of diphyllobothriasis from ingestion of wild Pacific salmon in Japan by surveying Diphyllobothrium plerocercoids in 182 salmon samples obtained from Japan. The plerocercoids were not detected in chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) (0/26), called Akizake in Japan, caught between September and November. However, the detection rate of plerocercoids in chum salmon, called Tokishirazu in Japan, caught between early April and June, was 51.1% (24/47) with an average of two plerocercoid larvae per fish. The detection rates of cherry salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) and pink salmon (Onc

Regeneration-Associated Factors in the Regulation of Adult and Post-Traumatic Neurogenesis in the Forebrain of Fish and Other Vertebrates.

This review summarizes a growing collection of data on adult neurogenesis in various vertebrate species, with a focus on teleost fish and mammals. Teleost fish serve as exceptional models for studying the dynamics of the cell cycle and the functions of adult neural stem progenitor cells (aNSPCs) throughout the central nervous system (CNS). New information about the characteristics of cells in various areas of the telencephalon of non-model objects-juvenile masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou and chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta-during postembryonic ontogenesis and after traumatic injury expands the cu

Indigenous sex-selective salmon harvesting demonstrates pre-contact marine resource management in Burrard Inlet, British Columbia, Canada.

To gain insight into pre-contact Coast Salish fishing practices, we used new palaeogenetic analytical techniques to assign sex identifications to salmonid bones from four archaeological sites in Burrard Inlet (Tsleil-Waut), British Columbia, Canada, dating between about 2300-1000 BP (ca. 400 BCE-CE 1200). Our results indicate that male chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) were preferentially targeted at two of the four sampled archaeological sites. Because a single male salmon can mate with several females, selectively harvesting male salmon can increase a fishery's maximum sustainable harvest. We
