Essential oil composition and biological activities of Ononis alba Poir (Fabaceae).

The phytochemical and biological properties of Ononis alba Poir L. (Fabaceae) were investigated for the first time in this study. The chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from the aerial parts was analysed by GC-MS. The phenolic contents of extracts obtained with different solvents were determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu assay and the antioxidant activity was evaluated through DPPH and CUPRAC methods. The inhibitory potential of these extracts was evaluated on α-amylase and α-glucosidase, whereas the antimicrobial effect was verified against some bacteria and fungi through the wel

Efficacy of extract from Ononis spinosa L. on ethanol-induced gastric ulcer in rats.

OBJECTIVE: Esomeprazole, the S-isomer of omeprazole, was launched in the UK in September 2000. The first proton pump inhibitor, omeprazole, has been marketed in the UK for over 10 years. However, the adverse event database of newly marketed drugs is limited, and it is only after widespread clinical use that the adverse effect profile of a drug is ascertained more comprehensively. This study aims to monitor the safety of esomeprazole prescribed in the primary care setting in England using prescription-event monitoring (PEM). METHODS: A postmarketing surveillance study using the observational c

Isoflavonoids with inhibiting effects on human hyaluronidase-1 and norneolignan clitorienolactone B from Ononis spinosa L. root extract.

Human hyaluronidase-1 (Hyal-1) is one of the main enzymes in the homeostasis of hyaluronic acid (HA), the main polysaccharide of extracellular matrix. Development of specific Hyal-1 inhibitors might be a promising target for improved wound healing, tissue regeneration, and looking at renal function for diuresis. By using surface-displayed Hyal-1 on Escherichia coli F470 cells, HA as substrate and stains-all method for quantification of undegraded HA, the respective enzyme activity can be determined easily. Based on the traditional use of extracts from the roots from Ononis spinosa L. (Restharr

[Investigation of antifungal activity of Ononis spinosa L. ash used for the therapy of skin infections as folk remedies].

Traditional folk remedies used for centuries come up focus of interest in recent years, due to the trend of use of herb-derived natural products. In addition, increasing morbidity and mortality rates of opportunistic fungal infections and accelerating antifungal resistance rates of fungi lead to the use of alternative therapies with herb-derived preparations as novel antifungals. Ononis spinosa L. (spiny restharrow), which is classified in Leguminosae family, is one of the plants used in herbal medicine as folk remedies for the treatment of skin lesions and/or infections as well as many other

Root Extracts From Ononis spinosa Inhibit IL-8 Release via Interactions With Toll-Like Receptor 4 and Lipopolysaccharide.

Extracts from the roots of Ononis spinosa L. (restharrow roots) are traditionally used for the treatment of patients with urinary tract infections due to its mild diuretic activity, caused by the inhibition of renal human hyaluronidase-1 by isoflavonoids. Preliminary studies also indicated anti-inflammatory effects. The following study aimed at investigating potential anti-inflammatory effects of restharrow extracts, prepared with solvents of different polarity. A dichloromethane extract (OS1), mainly composed of isoflavonoids and triterpenes as characterized by LC-MS, showed a concentration-d

Novel composite hydrogels prepared from carboxymethyl chitosan and polysaccharides extracted from Ononis natrix for controlled release of bioactive molecules.

Composite hydrogels were synthesized using carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCh) and polysaccharides (PS) extracted from Ononis natrix through chemical cross-linking with genipin, a naturally derived cross-linker. Hydrogels with different PS/CMCh ratios were characterized in terms of their structural, morphological, thermal, rheological, and biological properties. The results showed that an increase in PS concentration enhanced both the swelling capacity and viscoelastic properties of the hydrogels. In vitro drug release was carried out using ascorbic acid (Aas) and curcumin (Cur) as model of hydrophi

Assessing medicinal plants from South-Eastern Spain for potential anti-inflammatory effects targeting nuclear factor-Kappa B and other pro-inflammatory mediators.

AIM OF THE STUDY: Identification of plants with anti-inflammatory activity can be successfully based on information gained through knowledge on their traditional use. This is particularly true for biodiversity-rich regions of the world such as the Mediterranean. While such approaches are often single target based, here we used a multitarget, cell-based approach focusing on the pro-inflammatory signaling cascade and especially the NF-kappaB (NF-kappaB) pathway. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The plants from South-Eastern Spain were chosen on the basis that they were recorded as having a traditional us
