Onopordum acanthium has been considered in traditional medicine to be effective against different cancers. The chloroform extracts of the root, which displayed antiproliferative effect against human tumor cell lines, was subjected to bioactivity-guided multistep chromatographic separation. This experiment resulted in the isolation of the sesquiterpene lactones 4beta,14-dihydro-3-dehydrozaluzanin C (1), zaluzanin C (2) and 4beta,15,11beta,13-tetrahydrozaluzanin C (3), the neolignan nitidanin-diisovalerianate (4), besides 13-oxo-9Z,11 E-octadecadienoic acid (5), 24-methylenecholesterol (6), alph

Onopordum acanthium L. (Asteraceae), a traditionally used medicinal plant, was investigated for its morphological, phytochemical, and biological properties in this comprehensive study. Methanolic and aqueous extracts were prepared from different parts of the plant (root, stem, leaf, flower, and fruit) and analyzed for their phenolic composition, antioxidant, antidiabetic, anticholinesterase, antimicrobial, and genotoxic activities. LC-MS/MS analysis revealed that chlorogenic acid was most abundant in the flower (3045.38 ng/mL) and root (728.53 ng/mL) aqueous extracts, while quinic acid reached

This study presents the first comprehensive report on the phenolic composition, antioxidant activities, antimicrobial properties, and DNA protection potential of methanol and water extracts from flower parts of Onopordum carduchorum collected in the Gaziantep region of Turkey. In quantitative chromatographic analysis, bioactive compounds such as chlorogenic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, syringic acid, pinoresinol, protocatechuic acid, caffeic acid, and apigenin were detected in both extracts, with a total of 22 phenolic compounds found. While the total phenolic content was higher in the aqueous

This study investigates the phytochemical constituents and hepatoprotective properties of Onopordum cyrenaicum Maire & Weiller, a traditional medicinal herb. Phytochemical analysis revealed phenolic acids and flavonoids at concentrations of 3.06 GAE/g and 1.02 CE/g, respectively. LC-ESI-MS/MS identified 35 compounds known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In vitro antioxidant assays showed scavenging abilities against DPPH and ABTS free radicals with IC50 values of 198.68 and 151.19 µg/mL. Rats treated with diethylnitrosamine (DEN) exhibited liver injury. Still, those tre

The present study focused on the investigation of the inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 and nuclear factor kappa B1 gene expression, nitric oxide production, leukotriene biosynthesis (5-lipoxygenase), and cyclooxygenase-1 and cyclooxygenase-2 enzymes of Onopordum acanthium, and the isolation and identification of its active compounds. From the chloroform soluble part of the MeOH extract prepared from aerial parts, lignans [pinoresinol (1), syringaresinol (2), and medioresinol (3)] and flavonoids [hispidulin (4), nepetin (5), apigenin (6), and luteolin (7)] were isolated by a combination of differ

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Thistles species (Family: Compositae) are traditionally used in the Mediterranean area, particularly in Sardinia. They are usually gathered from the wild and used for both food and therapeutic purposes, including gastrointestinal disorders.
AIM OF THE STUDY: This work aims to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of eight wild thistles from Sardinia, in an in vitro model of gastric inflammation, and to identify the major active compounds in the extracts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The hydro-alcoholic extract of the aerial part of each species was prepared. After

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor has been utilized for monitoring analyte-ligand interactions in modern drug discovery processes. SPR biosensors measure the change in refractive indexes over the course of analyte molecules' binding to a specific immobilized ligand on sensor chip. This effort highlights a comprehensive SPR study besides enzymatic assay for discovery of new Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitors via screening of medicinal plants. At first, five medicinal plants were selected as potential sources for developing new ACE inhibitors through hydrolyzing hippuryl-L-hi

Thistle (Onopordum acanthium) has been traditionally employed for liver protection. However, we recently identified silibinin, the main bioactive compound of thistle extract, as an in vitro pancreatic lipase inhibitor, which suggested a potential role as an anti-obesity agent. This study aimed to assess, in vivo, the efficacy, safety, and effects of silibinin on human lipase. As a secondary objective, we evaluated potential changes in gut microbiota after silibinin treatment. A randomized trial comparing 150 mg/silibinin, 300 mg/silibinin, and a thistle extract (equivalent to 150 mg/silibinin)

OBJECTIVE: Cynarin is a derivative of hydroxycinnamic acid presented in various medicinal plants, such as Cynara scolymus L. and Onopordum illyricum L. To date, the antioxidant and antihypertensive activities of cynarin have been reported. However, whether cynarin has a therapeutic impact on ulcerative colitis (UC) is unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the potential effect of cynarin on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced acute colitis in vivo and on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)/interferon-γ (IFN-γ)-induced RAW264.7 and J774A.1 cellular inflammation model in vitro.

Since ancient times, thistles have been used as clotting agents in the production of traditional cheeses, particularly in the Mediterranean area. In recent years, their use in cheesemaking has increased to satisfy the growing requests from vegetarian consumers. In this research paper, four different cheeses, typical of the Mediterranean area, were evaluated from a nutritional point of view: Caciofiore (from Italy) and Torta del Casar (from Spain), both typically produced using vegetable rennet, and Queso de Murcia al vino (from Spain) and Feta (from Greece), traditionally produced using animal

AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to identify wild plants collected for medical purposes by the local people of Sivrice County, located in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Turkey, and to establish the uses and local names of these plants.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Field study was carried out over a period of approximately two years (2005-2006). During this period, 146 vascular plant specimens were collected. In addition, the relative importance value of the species was determined and informant consensus factor (FIC) was calculated for the medicinal plants included in the study.
RESULTS: A total

BACKGROUND: Functional cardiovascular disorders (FCD) can be attributed to around 25-40% of all heart patients, i.e. organic causes are not detectable. Characteristic symptoms are tachycardia, palpitations, cardiac arrhythmia, hyperventilation, vertigo, vasovagal syncopes and sleep disorders, with the latter being a problem of its own. Disturbed vegetative rhythms form the basis of these diseases. The medicinal product Cardiodoron counteracts the dysfunctional vegetative rhythmicity with 3 medicinal plants--Primula veris (common cowslip), Hyoscyamus niger (black henbane) and Onopordum acanthiu

The present study examined the physicochemical, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties of three medicinal plants: thyme (Thymus callieri Borbás ex Velen), cotton thistle (Onopordum acanthium L.), and hawthorn fruit (Crataegus monogyna Jacq.) from the Western Rhodope Mountains, Bulgaria. The first stage determined the physicochemical characteristics (moisture, ash, carbohydrates, proteins, and vitamin C) of the three herbs. The second stage investigated four types of extracts (aqueous, oil, methanolic, and ethanolic) of each herb and evaluated their total phenolic content, the presence of ph
