Cost of open access publishing in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Open access (OA) publishing makes research more accessible but is associated with steep article processing charges (APCs). The study objective was to characterize the APCs of OA publishing in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (OHNS) journals. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of published policies of 110 OHNS journals collated from three databases. The primary outcomes were the publishing model, APC for original research, and APC waiver policy. RESULTS: We identified 110 OHNS journals (57 fully OA, 47 hybrid, 2 subscription-only, 4 unknown model). After excluding

Open access, China, and the changing geography of publishing in bone science: Lessons from Bone Research.

Open access has widened access to scientific knowledge while shifting much of the cost of publication from readers and libraries to authors and their funders. At the same time, China has rapidly expanded its research output and journal infrastructure, reshaping the geography of scientific publishing. This Commentary examines how these developments intersect in bone science, using Bone Research as a case study. The journal's rise reflects genuine scientific achievement as well as the strategic combination of full open access, international publishing infrastructure, a large research community,

Economic and geographical disparities in global contribution to open access publishing in anaesthesiology: A bibliometric analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Open access (OA) publishing improved the reach of scientific discoveries, particularly among researchers in lower-income countries. However, OA publishing still has a global imbalance. This bibliometric analysis evaluates anaesthesia OA journals to explore geographical and economic disparities in publication volume. METHODS: We queried the Directory of Open Access Journals for OA anaesthesia-related journals between 2014 and 2024. Data from the included journals were analysed using Scopus, from which we extracted the year of publication and the corresponding author's affi

Promoting awareness of open access publishing in speech-language therapy and audiology: Lessons from multilingual language assessment research.

Access to speech-language therapy (SLT) and audiology (AUD) research is critical for clinicians, researchers, policymakers and the public to fulfil the professional scope of practice, support advocacy and enable evidence-based service delivery. However, research locked behind paywalls disproportionately limits access for underserved communities and for clinician-researchers seeking tools in languages with scarce resources. Limited access to clinically applicable research disproportionately affects individuals needing SLT and/or AUD services in under-resourced languages and populations, where c

Does it pay to pay? A comparison of the benefits of open-access publishing across various sub-fields in biology.

Authors are often faced with the decision of whether to maximize traditional impact metrics or minimize costs when choosing where to publish the results of their research. Many subscription-based journals now offer the option of paying an article processing charge (APC) to make their work open. Though such "hybrid" journals make research more accessible to readers, their APCs often come with high price tags and can exclude authors who lack the capacity to pay to make their research accessible. Here, we tested if paying to publish open access in a subscription-based journal benefited authors by

A Review of Open Access, No-Fee Journals Indexed in PubMed and Scopus for Publishing Image Reports in Medical Research.

BACKGROUND: Aspects of medicine can be conveyed through paradigmatic images (anatomical-surgical, radiological, microscopic) in image reports, a type of article more immediate than case reports. The aim of this review is to find journals allowing the publication of image reports and that are free of charge, open access and indexed in the best databases. METHODS: The search started with a Boolean string and followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Eligibility criteria were: English language, human medicine field, international DOI and ISSN codes applied, free of charge, open access, PubMed/Scopus

Scientific impact increases when researchers publish in open access and international collaboration: A bibliometric analysis on poverty-related disease papers.

BACKGROUND: The European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), like many other research funders, requires its grantees to make papers available via open access (OA). This article investigates the effect of publishing in OA journals and international collaboration within and between European and sub-Saharan African countries on citation impact and likelihood of falling into the top 1% and top 10% most cited papers in poverty-related disease (PRD) research. METHODS: Disease-specific research publications were identified in the Web of Science™ and MEDLINE using Medical Subj

The rise of predatory publishing and journals.

Predatory publishing is a practice where businesses offer illegitimate and unethical publishing where an open access model is generally used with very little or no peer review at all. These publishers also charge high fees for article processing without the standard editorial or publishing standards for scientific disciplines. Predatory journals are an increasing phenomenon in dentistry, as in any healthcare academic publishing. This can mean poor-quality or false research is given false legitimacy and becomes available for dissemination and public consumption. They can be seen as an easy rout

"The system is obviously bonkers": The APC Trap and the bind of scholarly publishing across four research intensive institutions in the U.S.

This study analyzes the cognitive dissonance displayed by authors at research intensive institutions in the United States (U.S.) regarding the scholarly publishing of Open Access (OA) publications. A qualitative analysis of 154 open-ended responses was conducted. Eight codes were identified, then each response was analyzed for the codes. The codes themselves coalesce around a phenomenon the authors of this study term the article processing charge (APC) Trap, in which privileged and well-resourced researchers in the U.S. experience highly contradictory sentiments about OA publishing. The cognit

Open access, "piracy" and Article Processing Charges (APC) in Argentina: an informed policy for the national research funding agency.

The article explores the growing influence of Article Processing Charges (APCs) in academic publishing, especially in Argentina, and the challenges they pose for non-hegemonic countries. It highlights the shift from traditional subscription models to open access models, driven by commercial publishers, which often impose significant financial burdens on researchers and institutions. The study aims to examine the issues arising from these models, particularly the commercial open access system, to describes the actions developed by the National Agency for the promotion of Research, Technological

Enabling equitable open access to commercially funded research publications.

Pharmaceutical companies fund much biomedical research, yet many journals restrict open access publishing options for peer-reviewed articles reporting commercially funded research. Expanded publishing options, such as funder-neutral publishing policies, will help address this inequity.

The Open Versus Closed Access Publication Advantage in Orthopaedic Surgery.

BACKGROUND: As scientific publishing has shifted to digital platforms, two primary article-publishing modalities have emerged: open access and closed access. Open access is freely accessible with an article processing charge (APC) paid by authors, whereas closed access lies behind paywalls, with low to no APC for authors. As the academic community increasingly relies on digital dissemination, it is critical to evaluate how these models influence research visibility and impact. This study compared open versus closed access randomized control trials (RCTs) across five prevalent orthopaedic condi

The Changing Medical Publishing Industry: Economics, Expansion, and Equity.

Medical journal publishing has changed dramatically over the past decade. The shift from print to electronic distribution altered the industry's economic model. This was followed by open access mandates from funding organizations and the subsequent imposition of article processing charges on authors. The medical publishing industry is large and while there is variation across journals, it is overall highly profitable. As journals have moved to digital dissemination, advertising revenues decreased and publishers shifted some of the losses onto authors by way of article processing charges. The n

Predatory journals: a major threat in orthopaedic research.

Predatory publishing is a major threat to contemporary publishing, as it offers 'to unaware scientist's', a quick open-access publication against fees without peer-review procedures.. Lack of peer-review leads to unethical practices, as plagiarism, publication of unscientific falsified data, and even unsafe clinical practices. As these journals threaten the credibility of academic publishing, significant work has been done from many scientific teams, in the last years, in establishing discriminating criteria between predatory and legitimate publishing. In the present review, we include mechani

Article Processing Charges in General Surgery Journals: Implications for Equitable Publishing Access in Low-Income and Middle-Income Countries.

INTRODUCTION: Open access publishing promotes broad dissemination of scientific knowledge, enhancing transparency and accessibility. However, article processing charges (APCs) required by many journals create significant financial barriers, particularly for researchers from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Prior studies across multiple disciplines have shown that APCs disproportionately restrict LMIC authors' ability to publish, perpetuating inequities in academic representation. The impact of APCs within general surgery remains underexplored. This study aims to quantify APCs in surgi
