Emission from open burning of municipal solid waste in India.

Open burning of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is a potential non-point source of emission, which causes greater concern especially in developing countries such as India. Lack of awareness about environmental impact of open burning, and ignorance of the fact, i.e. 'Open burning is a source of emission of carcinogenic substances' are major hindrances towards an appropriate municipal solid waste management system in India. The paper highlights the open burning of MSW practices in India, and the current and projected emission of 10 major pollutants (dioxin, furans, particulate matter, carbon monoxid

Will open waste burning become India's largest air pollution source?

India struggles with frequent exceedances of the ambient air quality standard for particulate matter and benzene. In the past two decades, India has made considerable progress in tackling indoor air pollution, by phasing out kerosene lamps, and pushing biofuel using households towards Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) usage. In this study, we use updated emission inventories and trends in residential fuel consumption, to explore changes in the contribution of different sectors towards India's largest air pollution problem. We find that residential fuel usage is still the largest air pollution sour

Environmental impact of open burning of polyester and cotton textile waste: a comparative analysis.

Open burning of waste (OBW), particularly textile waste, is a growing but under-researched global issue with critical environmental and public health implications. This study examines the scale and impact of open burning of textile waste (OBTW), focusing on polyester and cotton materials commonly found in post-consumer and industrial waste streams. While high-income countries strictly regulate open burning, it remains prevalent in low- and middle-income countries due to limited waste infrastructure and poor waste management, contributing to severe air pollution and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissio

Emission reductions from woody biomass waste for energy as an alternative to open burning.

Woody biomass waste is generated throughout California from forest management, hazardous fuel reduction, and agricultural operations. Open pile burning in the vicinity of generation is frequently the only economic disposal option. A framework is developed to quantify air emissions reductions for projects that alternatively utilize biomass waste as fuel for energy production. A demonstration project was conducted involving the grinding and 97-km one-way transport of 6096 bone-dry metric tons (BDT) of mixed conifer forest slash in the Sierra Nevada foothills for use as fuel in a biomass power co

Characterization and quantification of atmospheric emissions of dioxins, dl-PCBs and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from municipal solid waste open burning in Southeast Asia.

Solid waste open burning is an important source of dioxins and other toxic pollutants that have not been sufficiently characterized. This study investigated atmospheric emissions of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) from municipal solid waste open burning (MSWOB) and mixed plastics burning in unconfined loose piles. Emission factors (EF) of 17 chlorinated dioxins, 12 dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs), and 13 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) varied between experiments owing to changing waste types and combustion conditions. Average EFs for MSWOB on a wet weight basis

Carbonaceous materials derived from corn cob waste via pyrolysis, hydrothermal carbonization and open burning: contrasting biocompatibility and Cu2+ neurotoxicity modulation in a synaptosome model.

Here, three different types of carbonaceous nanoparticles/materials were obtained from corn cob agricultural waste using different "green" approaches without surface functionalization. Biochars synthesized from corn cobs by two-step pyrolysis at 600 °C (PB), carbon dots synthesized using a hydrothermal approach at 180 °C (CD) and smoke particulate matter (SP) prepared by open burning were comparatively analyzed for biocompatibility and Cu2+ adsorption capacity using a presynaptic rat cortex nerve terminal model (synaptosomes). The PB did not change the extrasynaptosomal levels of inhibitory ne

Replacing the greater evil: Can legalizing decentralized waste burning in improved devices reduce waste burning emissions for improved air quality?

Open waste burning emissions constitute a significant source of air pollution affecting human health in India. In regions where cleaner fuels have displaced solid biofuel usage, open waste burning is rapidly becoming one of the largest sources of airborne human class-I-carcinogens and particulate matter. As the establishment of waste management infrastructure in rural India is likely to take years, we explore whether health-relevant emissions can be reduced by legalizing the burning of dry non-biodegradable waste in improved devices. We measure the emission factors of 76 VOCs, CH4, CO, and CO2

Solid waste management in Ugandan developing cities: Material flow analysis and sustainable practices for reducing the global warming potential.

The introduction of appropriate solid waste management (SWM) strategies can foster the mitigation of waste open dumping and burning in low-income developing cities. In this work, the SWM system in Gulu (Uganda) has been studied, and a material flow analysis, also of informal flows of waste, has been carried out. Moreover, the effectiveness of the SWM system of St. Mary's Lacor Hospital in Gulu was evaluated. Waste has been characterized and a material flow analysis allowed to highlight the difference with the current situation in the remaining part of Gulu. The sustainable practices already im

Prevalence of plastic waste as a household fuel in low-income communities of the Global South.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that households burn plastics to manage waste and help satisfy their energy demand. To examine the prevalence, extent, and reasons for using plastic waste as household fuel, we report on a survey with 1018 key informants from cities in 26 countries in the Global South. Informants were purposively selected due to their familiarity with the living conditions in their communities. One-third of respondents reported being aware of plastic waste burning, with some reporting that their households engaged in this practice. Analyses of the data reveal significant correlation

Biomass burning drives urban PM2.5 across the Western Balkans: evidence from a six-city source apportionment study in North Macedonia.

Biomass burning is widely reported as a driver of wintertime PM2.5 pollution across the Western Balkans, but its residential and open-burning components have rarely been resolved using multi-city source apportionment. We applied EPA Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) 5.0 to 1195 daily filter samples collected at six urban background sites in North Macedonia during two campaigns (October 2020-October 2021 and March 2023-March 2024). PMF consistently resolved residential wood combustion (RWC) and open/waste biomass burning (OBB) as distinct factors at all sites. RWC profiles were consistent acr

PCBs and PCDD/Fs in soil from informal e-waste recycling sites and open dumpsites in India: Levels, congener profiles and health risk assessment.

Growth of informal electronic waste (e-waste) recycling sector is an emerging problem for India. The presence of halogenated compounds in e-wastes may result in the formation of persistent organic pollutants like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) during recycling processes. We therefore investigated PCBs and PCDD/Fs in surface soils explicitly from the informal e-waste recycling sites and nearby open dumpsites of major metropolitan cities from four corners of India, viz., New Delhi (North), Kolkata (East), Mumbai (West) and Chennai

A strong spatial association between e-waste burn sites and childhood lymphoma in the West Bank, Palestine.

A paper in the International Journal of Cancer analyzed Palestinian cancer registry data in the West Bank from 1998 to 2007, showing a cluster of elevated cancer incidence in rural villages in south-west Hebron, with a 4.10 risk ratio for childhood lymphoma (p = 0.0023). The paper called for investigation of the environmental or genetic etiologies of this cluster in an otherwise unremarkable rural area.1 Our research in these same villages shows them to be the center of an extensive informal electronic and electrical waste (e-waste) dismantling industry in Palestine, operating for almost two d

Methodology for characterizing emissions from small (0.5-2 MTD) batch-fed gasification systems using multiple waste compositions.

A compact, containerized gasification system was characterized for air emissions while burning four waste types. A methodology is presented for developing a standardized test waste composition and demonstrated using three military and one civilian waste types. Batch charges of waste were processed through a gasification chamber, afterburner, and wet scrubber. The 0.5-2 metric ton per day (MTD) system was designed for mobile deployment by the military in forward operations but would be applicable to small scale civilian applications. Emissions data from these types of small capacity, cyclically

Effect of protesting by burning barricades on PM2.5: chemical composition and oxidative potential evaluation.

Protests have become a global phenomenon, with road blockades among the most common methods used to express objection. In many countries, these blockades involve the open burning of materials such as tires, wood, and waste. In this study, PM2.5 was collected during an active burning protest episode as well as over the subsequent days. PM2.5 was characterized for the carbonaceous fraction, water-soluble ions, elements, and organic compounds (alkanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phthalates, fatty acids, hopanes, levoglucosan, dioxins, furans, and dioxin-like polychlorobiphenyls (PCD

Protecting future generations from E-waste: Policy gaps and WHO's call to action.

The rapid expansion of digital technology has revolutionized education, communication and healthcare but created a parallel crisis: e-waste. Globally, 53.6 million tonnes were generated in 2019, with only 17.4% formally recycled. The remainder is processed through unsafe methods such as open burning, acid leaching and crude dismantling. Children and pregnant women are especially vulnerable due to rapid growth, immature organs and special circumstances. India is the world's third-largest e-waste generator, producing 1.71 million tonnes annually,1 while WHO estimates report 3230 kilotons in 2019
