Intracranial ophthalmic artery aneurysm.

A 45-year old black man with a carotid-ophthalmic artery aneurysm developed sudden loss of vision in his left eye, a mid-dilated pupil, and pain on movement of the left eye. A temporal island of vision was present in the left eye and the right visual field was normal. There were no other neurologic abnormalities. The aneurysm spontaneously ruptured, resulting in the death of the patient.

[Traumatic ophthalmic artery-superior ophthalmic vein fistula: a case report].

Traumatic intraorbital arteriovenous fistula is rare and only 2 cases have been reported. The authors report the case of a 70-year-old man with consciousness disturbance after non-penetrating head injury. CT scan showed diffuse subarachnoid hemorrhage in the basal cistern, and angiography on the next day revealed ophthalmic artery-superior ophthalmic vein fistula in the right orbit. During the clinical course of this lesion, there was mild chemosis of the right eye, without palsy of extraocular muscles. Both papilledema and bruit were absent. Conservative treatment was chosen. On the 26th day

A rare marginal tentorial artery to ophthalmic artery anastomosis.

We report a patient with a marginal tentorial artery to ophthalmic artery anastomosis. A middle-aged man presented with subarachnoid hemorrhage and underwent angiography, where selective microcatheter injection of the meningohypophyseal trunk and marginal tentorial artery revealed a collateral to the distal ophthalmic artery. The radiological findings, embryology behind ophthalmic artery anastomoses and the neurosurgical and neurovascular relevance are discussed.

Ophthalmic Artery Occlusion Following Transconjunctival Orbitotomy.

Postoperative blindness after orbital surgery is an extremely rare and a disastrous complication. Ophthalmic artery occlusion as a cause of such unexpected vision loss has not been documented in literature. The authors report a case of a middle aged man who developed sudden vision loss due to ophthalmic artery occlusion following transconjunctival excision of orbital schwanomma. The possible mechanisms contributing to the loss of vision are discussed and preventive strategies are suggested to reduce the incidence of this complication.

Bilateral intra-orbital ophthalmic artery aneurysms.

CLINICAL DETAILS: A 52-year-old man presented with neck pain, nausea and vomiting (Hunt-Hess grade 1). CT scan showed subarachnoid hemorrhage. Cerebral angiography showed multiple arterial aneurysms (right communicating posterior, right anterior choroid, left pericallosal, intraorbital ophthalmic bilaterally). All aneurysms but intraorbital ophthalmic ones were treated with endovascular embolizations. As the intraorbital aneurysms were asymptomatic no treatment was performed. The patient was dismissed without any neurological deficits. DISCUSSION: Intraorbital ophthalmic aneurysms are very un

Intraorbital aneurysm of the ophthalmic artery.

Intraorbital ophthalmic artery (OA) aneurysms are rare. They can be asymptomatic or present with visual disturbances, exophthalmos and headaches. We present a case of a 57-year-old man who presented with reduced vision, diplopia and exophthalmos. A carotid artery angiogram identified a right OA aneurysm. Due to the low risk of rupture and the patient's comorbidities including cardiac and renal impairment, a conservative approach was followed. A few weeks post presentation, the patient's vision and optic nerve function had improved. This case reiterates the importance of considering conservativ

Double ophthalmic arteries arising from the internal carotid artery: a case report of a hidden second ophthalmic artery.

A case of double ophthalmic arteries arising from the internal carotid artery with unique features is reported. This case was discovered following in the course of time the progress of a thrombosis of the anterior cavernous sinus associated with a low-flow direct arteriovenous fistula of the superior ophthalmic vein. At different time points, the same patient underwent four angiographic studies and one computerized tomography with contrast medium. Angiographies showed that the double internal carotid artery origin of the ophthalmic artery was detectable only within a short range of time. To th

Clinical significance of the ophthalmic artery in carotid artery disease.

A total of 141 subjects with tight stenosis (> or = 75%) or occlusion of internal carotid artery were followed up at intervals 3-6 months regularly for 40 +/- 16 months. The direction of ophthalmic artery flow was used as a parameter of risk indicator on cerebral ischemic events. Eleven patients with bilateral carotid tight stenosis/occlusion were excluded in the analysis. Thus, the 130 carotid arteries were divided into three groups: (1) carotid artery with ipsilateral hemispheric TIA or stroke (85 patients), (2) carotid arteries with contralateral hemispheric TIA/stroke or VBI (15 patients),

An anomalous ophthalmic artery arising from the middle meningeal artery.

A case of the left ophthalmic artery arising from the frontal branch of the middle meningeal artery was found in the cadaver of a 65 year-old Japanese man who died of senility. The original ophthalmic artery, much smaller than normal, arose from the internal carotid artery and communicated with a branch of the anomalous ophthalmic artery under the optic nerve. From this communicating branch, the central artery of the retina originated. The right ophthalmic artery was also anomalous. Though normal in origin and ramification, it passed under the optic nerve to reach the medial wall of the orbit.

Central Retinal Artery Occlusion Due to Intraorbital Ophthalmic Artery Aneurysm.

A 60-year-old woman experienced sudden onset of vision loss in her right eye. Neuroimaging studies initially were interpreted as tumorous compression of the right optic nerve. On referral to our institution, examination findings were that of a right central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO). Review of the previous imaging studies was consistent with an aneurysm of the intraorbital ophthalmic artery at the origin of the central retinal artery, which was believed to be the cause of the CRAO.

Ophthalmic artery aneurysm: potential culprit of central retinal artery occlusion.

Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is one of the most devastating ophthalmic emergencies, causing acute painless visual loss in the affected eye. We describe the first case of acute non-arteritic CRAO associated with peripheral ophthalmic artery aneurysm and its clinical course after intra-arterial thrombolysis therapy. This case suggests that ophthalmic artery aneurysm can be the cause of CRAO and should be included in the differential diagnosis of CRAO.

Morphological and functional abnormalities of ophthalmic artery in patients with ophthalmic vascular accidents.

BACKGROUND: By observing and comparing the morphological and functional differences of the ophthalmic artery (OA) in patients with ocular vascular accidents (OVAs) due to iatrogenic embolism or non-iatrogenic occlusion, we propose a classification system based on the characteristics of OA on invasive digital subtraction angiography (DSA). METHODS: All patients undergoing ophthalmic arterial DSA within 1 week after the OVAs between January 2017 and December 2021 were enrolled and divided into different types, and the differences between iatrogenic embolism and non-iatrogenic occlusion categori

Ophthalmic artery stenosis presenting as amaurosis fugax.

BACKGROUND: Amaurosis fugax is a classic clinical presentation of carotid arterial embolism. Amaurosis results from ischemia to the retinal tissue, is vision threatening, and an ophthalmological emergency. Stenoses isolated within the distal arteries supplying the retina (including the ophthalmic artery) are likely underdiagnosed during the workup of amaurosis, as evaluation is typically focused on carotid artery disease resulting in embolic events. Isolated stenosis of the ophthalmic artery may also be underrecognized by clinicians, as its discussion appears limited to case reports within the

[Absolute blood flow in the ophthalmic artery].

Knowledge about the total blood flow in the ophthalmic artery (OA) is very important in some ocular disorders. We estimated the total blood flow (BF) in the OA by measuring simultaneously the inner diameter of the OA (Doph) and the mean blood velocity (VMmean) of the same OA. Doph in [mm] was estimated with digitalized subtraction angiography (DSA) of the OA. The blood velocity was measured by pulsed Doppler sonography (4 MHz, 39 +/- 4 mm orbital depth, sample volume 4 mm, EME, Uberlingen). In addition to the pulse curve outline formed by the peak velocities, a pulse curve mean line was establ
