Specific and common antigens of Clonorchis sinensis and Opisthorchis viverrini(Opisthorchidae, Trematoda).

The antigenic characterizations and serological reactions of human liver flukes, Clonorchis sinensis and Opisthorchis viverrini, were analyzed by immunoblot. The antigenic profiles of the crude extract of Clonorchis contained major proteins of 8, 26-28, 34-37, 43, and 70 kDa, and those of Opisthorchis 34-37, 43, 70, and 100 kDa. Of these, the 8, 26-28 and 34-37 kDa bands of Clonorchis and the 100 kDa of Opisthorchis were major components of each excretory-secretory antigen. The 8 and 26-28 kDa bands were specific to Clonorchis but the 100 kDa of Opisthorchis cross-reacted with the sera of clon

[Participation of Codiella troscheli (Mollusca: Prosobranchia) in the Metorchis albidus (Trematoda; Opisthorchidae) life cycle].

Investigating Mollusca prosobranchia of the Bithyniidae family in the water reservoirs of the Novosibirsk Region in 1994-1998 first revealed that Codiella troscheli had the trematode Metorchis albidus (Braun, 1893). The species affiliation of the trematode was experimentally verified. This paper presents the results of studies of the seasonal and daily emission of M. albidus cercariae and data on their longevity in the environment, on the ability of the cercariae to live in fish and that of metacercariae in the body of a definitive host. The studies have indicated that not only the trematode O

Genetic diversity of nuclear ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 rDNA sequence in Clonorchis sinensis Cobbold, 1875 (Trematoda: Opisthorchidae) from the Russian Far East.

The present study examined the molecular organisation and sequence variation in the nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) region, including the two internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2) and the 5.8S gene of the Clonorchis sinensis from the Russian Far East. The relevant sequences from other parts of this species' area were downloaded from GenBank. The results showed 100% identity for all investigated 5.8S-ITS2 rDNA sequences. In contrast, two levels of intraspecific variations were revealed in the complete ITS1 sequences. The intra-genomic variation resulted from a C/T polymorphism in a single p

[(INFESTATION OF FISHES OF THE FAMILY CYPRINIDAE IN THE FOCI OF TREMATODES OF THE ECOSYSTEM OF THE BELAYA RIVER (THE REPUBLIC OF BASHKORTOSTAN)].

In the ecosystem of the Belaya River, fishes of the family Cyprinidae were infected with three epidemically important species oftrematodes of the family Opisthorchidae: Opisthorchisfelineus, Metorchis bilis, and Pseudamphistomum truncatumn. No biotopes of mollusks of the genus Codiella were detected. The contamination of underyearlings with-Ofelineus and M.bilis metacercariae indicates that there are cores of opisthorchiasis and metorchiasis (M.bifis) foci in the ecosystem of the lower course of the river. The presence of biotopes of the genus Bithynia mollusks, the first intermediate host.for

[Distomatosis: diagnosis and treatment].

Distomatosis caused by Fasciola hepatica is fairly common in France. It is due to the ingestion of contaminated watercress or wild dandelions. Fever is frequent. Jaundice and liver pain are inconstant. The disease is often revealed by an isolated eosinophilia. Ultrasonography and/or computerized tomography are useful to evaluate the hepatic lesions. The diagnosis is confirmed by the finding of eggs in the stools or by serological tests. Numerous other flukes may infect people living overseas and particularly in South-East Asia. Clonorchis sinensis and other Opisthorchidae are responsible for d

Foodborne zoonotic parasites of the family Opisthorchiidae.

Several foodborne zoonotic trematodes of the family Opisthorchiidae have been reported to infect people, specifically two genera, Clonorchis and Opisthorchis. Three species Clonorchis sinensis, Opisthorchis felineus and Opisthorchis viverrini are the most extensivley studied of the Opisthorchiidae. At least 680 million people worldwide are at risk of infection of these liver flukes through the consumption of raw or partially cooked freshwater cyprinid fish. An estimated 45 million people in Europe and Asia are currently infected with these liver flukes. Of these, the 35 million are infected wi

Bithyniid snails as hosts of Opisthorchiidae and Notocotylidae in the south of Western Siberia, Russia.

Opisthorchiasis and related infections are persistent and substantial public health burdens from eastern Europe to southeastern and northern Asia. Snails of the family Bithyniidae act as first intermediate hosts not only for the trematodes of the family Opisthorchiidae but also for those of the family Notocotylidae. There are certain morphological similarities between the aforementioned trematode cercariae. In order to find natural local foci of opisthorchiasis, which are established primarily according to the presence of infected bithyniid snails at the area under examination, it is crucial t

Opisthorchis felineus and Metorchis bilis are the main agents of liver fluke infection of humans in Russia.

Liver fluke infections are gradually transforming from a local problem of individual geographic regions to a widespread problem. The observed expansion is likely to be connected with the ever-increasing intensity of traffic flow and migration of the infected carriers between cities, regions, and countries. Opisthorchis felineus, the trematode belonging to the family Opisthorchiidae, is a well known causative agent of the infection called opisthorchiasis. Metorchis bilis, also a member of the family Opisthorchiidae, causes metorchiasis, a disease very close to opisthorchiasis in symptomatology.

Idiopyrgus souleyetianus (Gastropoda: Tomichiidae) as an intermediate host of the liver fluke Amphimerus sp. (Trematoda: Opisthorchiidae) in Brazil.

Despite the importance of fish-borne trematodes of the family Opisthorchiidae as causative agents of human liver fluke disease, studies on these parasites outside Asia are relativally scarce. In South America, human focus of amphimerosis is known in Ecuador since the mid-20th century, and Amphimerus spp. have also been reported in wild and domestic mammals. Nevertheless, the knowledge on the snails that act as the first intermediate host of these potentially zoonotic parasites are scarce. Herein, a new cercaria of the pleurolophocercous morphotype found in the freshwater snail Idiopyrgus soule

Detection of antibodies in sera from patients with Opisthorchiasis.

The indirect immunofluorescent antibody technique (IFA) was used for detection of antibodies in sera of patients with Opisthorchiasis. Antibodies to fluke worm and egg antigens were detected in 166 of 205 (81%) patients. The test showed that only the IgG class of antibodies reacting exclusively with integumental wall of the worm (AW) were positive in 46.8% (96/205), reacting only with the wall of intact eggs in 11 out of 205 (5.4%) and antibodies to both fluke and their egg antigens were present in 28.8% (59/205). In addition, 5.4% (11/205) of patients' sera were positive for autoantibodies pr

High prevalence of zoonotic trematodes in roach (Rutilus rutilus) in the Gulf of Finland.

The intention to increase roach (Rutilus rutilus) consumption is in focus for ecological and economic reasons in Finland. However, its safety as food has not been considered comprehensively. We collected and artificially digested 85 roach halves originating from the south-eastern coast of Finland, and found trematode metacercariae in 98.8% of the samples. Based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing of amplicons generated from the ITS2 gene region, zoonotic parasites of the family Opistorchiidae were identified as Pseudamphistomum truncatum and Metorchis bilis, and also non-zoonotic

A sero-epidemiological survey on the occurrence of opisthorchiid liver flukes in red foxes ( Vulpes vulpes) in Berlin, Germany.

Serum samples collected from red foxes in the city of Berlin between 1996 and 1999 were analysed for the presence of antibodies against Opisthorchis felineus and Metorchis bilis using an indirect ELISA. Out of 1,000 specimens, 30.6% and 46.5% reacted positively with specific O. felineus and M. bilis antigens, respectively. Seroprevalence in adult foxes was always higher than in juveniles. While no significant differences were observed in adult foxes throughout the period, in juvenile specimens seroprevalence declined from 1996 to 1997, then stayed at a comparable level in 1998 and increased in

Integrative taxonomy of European parasitic flatworms of the genus Metorchis Looss, 1899 (Trematoda: Opisthorchiidae).

Metorchis spp. are flukes (Platyhelminthes: Digenea) that infect vertebrates, including humans, dogs, cats, poultry and wild game, with cyprinid freshwater fish serving as typical second intermediate hosts. In their definitive hosts, the Metorchis spp. are difficult to identify to species. We provide and analyze sequences of two nuclear (18S rDNA and ITS2) and two mitochondrial (CO1 and ND1) DNA loci of four morphologically identified European species of the Metorchis, namely Metorchis albidus, Metorchis bilis, Metorchis crassiusculus and Metorchis xanthosomus, and of another opisthorchiid, Eu

Metacercariae in fishes of Sun Moon lake which is an endemic area for Clonorchis sinensis in Taiwan.

The Sun Moon lake in Central Taiwan is a known endemic area for clonorchiasis. Of the 45 fresh water fish, Hemiculter leucisculus, from the lake that were examined by artificial gastric juice digestion in October 1995, all were found to harbor metacercariae in their muscle. The number of metacercariae isolated from each fish ranged from 2 to 2,185, with an average of 254. A total of 11,443 metacercariae was collected from the 45 fish. Of the 4,223 metacercaria that were examined under light microscope, 4,064 (96.23%) were found to belong to Haplorchis taichui, 90(2.13%) to H. pumilio, 2(0.05%)
