nox2/cybb Deficiency Affects Zebrafish Retinotectal Connectivity.

NADPH oxidase (Nox)-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been linked to neuronal polarity, axonal outgrowth, cerebellar development, regeneration of sensory axons, and neuroplasticity. However, the specific roles that individual Nox isoforms play during nervous system development in vivo remain unclear. To address this problem, we investigated the role of Nox activity in the development of retinotectal connections in zebrafish embryos. Zebrafish broadly express four nox genes (nox1, nox2/cybb, nox5, and duox) throughout the CNS during early development. Application of a pan-Nox inhibitor

Differential effects of antifolate on the development of brain parts in chick embryos.

A quantitative study was made of the differential effects of the antifolate amethopterin (methotrexate) on the development of cerebral hemispheres, optic lobes and cerebellum in chick embryos. Most surviving embryos show a significant under-development at day 18 of incubation. Different brain parts respond differently (disproportionately) to the treatment: cerebellum--most drastically, optic lobes--least drastically (net weights). Within the cerebellum, Purkinje and other large cells respond less drastically than small cells. The embryo thus had highly significantly changed ratios of weights o

Neural cell types surviving congenital sensory deprivation in the optic lobes of Drosophila melanogaster.

Golgi staining of neuronal cell types in the optic lobe rudiments of adult eyeless flies of the sine oculis (so) mutant of Drosophila melanogaster reveals partial independence of optic lobe's development from compound eye formation. (1) Differentiation and maintenance of many neuronal cell types of medulla and lobular complex do not require innervation of the medulla from the retina and the lamina. Neurons derived from the outer and inner optic anlage have been found in adult eyeless flies. (2) The rudiments of ipsilateral medulla, lobula, and lobular plate are isotopically connected with each

A bio-inspired research paradigm of collision perception neurons enabling neuro-robotic integration: the LGMD case.

Compared with human vision, locust visual systems excel at rapid and precise collision detection, despite relying on only hundreds of thousands of neurons organized through a few neuropils. This efficiency makes them an attractive model system for developing artificial collision-detecting systems. Specifically, researchers have identified collision-selective neurons in the locust's optic lobe, called lobula giant movement detectors (LGMDs), which respond specifically to approaching objects. Research upon LGMD neurons began in the early 1970s. Initially, due to their large size, these neurons w

Physiology and morphology of visual movement detector neurons in a crab (Decapoda: Brachyura).

Although visually elicited behaviors have been extensively studied in crabs, their investigation at the neurophysiological level is scant. The present study is a physiological and morphological description of intracellularly recorded and dye injected visual movement detector neurons that respond to the same stimulus that elicits the escape response in the crab Chasmagnathus granulatus. The neurons were investigated in intact animals. The response of movement detector neurons to the danger stimulus (an object moving above the animal) consists of a strong discharge of action potentials frequentl

The optic lobe-pars intercerebralis axis is involved in circa'bi'dian rhythm of the large black chafer Holotrichia parallela.

The large black chafer Holotrichia parallela exhibits ~ 48-h circa'bi'dian rhythm. Although circabidian rhythm is suggested to involve the circadian clock, no physiological studies have been conducted to verify this involvement. We examined the effects of optic lobe or pars intercerebralis removal on the circabidian rhythm. After removing both optic lobes, all beetles lost their circabidian rhythms (N = 25), but all beetles exhibited circabidian rhythm after removing unilateral optic lobe (N = 18). However, 22% of the latter group exhibited day switching. After removal of the pars intercerebra

Reduction of brain volume correlates with behavioral changes in queen ants.

The behavior of reproductive female ants distinctly changes during the transition from virgin to mature, egg-laying queen. A winged female ant flies only once during her lifetime when she engages in the nuptial flight. Once she is mated she sheds her wings, excavates a nest and starts laying eggs, the basis for her future colony. We show for two species of harvester ants that this transition is accompanied by changes in the performance of behavioral tests: flying virgins are positively phototactic and prefer open areas, whereas young queens prefer the dark, avoid open areas and, given the oppo

Quantitative studies of variabilities and of nutrient partition between cerebral hemispheres, optic lobes, cerebella and bodies of individual chick embryos.

The extent of variability in weight, DNA content and protein content of cerebral hemispheres, optic lobes and cerebella of individual brains has been studied in newly hatched chicks in which these parts can be easily delineated and quantitatively dissected out. The variabilities were within narrow ranges; nevertheless, for some individuals the above parameters were significantly higher. Correlations between such parameter values for egg and body weights, and different brain parts of the same animals were also studied. Body weights were significantly correlated with egg weights. A single-cell atlas of the bobtail squid visual and nervous system highlights molecular principles of convergent evolution.

The cephalopod and vertebrate visual systems are a textbook example of convergent evolution with unknown molecular underpinnings. Here we characterize 98,537 single-cell transcriptomes in the bobtail squid Euprymna berryi to understand how the cephalopod retina and optic lobes relate to the vertebrate retina. We confirm the overall relative simplicity of the cephalopod retina but identify two related photoreceptor cell subtypes expressing distinct r-opsins. By contrast, the adult optic lobe contains a diverse repertoire of neuronal and glial cell types, with a predominance of dopaminergic neur

Role of semaphorin-1a in the developing visual system of the disease vector mosquito Aedes aegypti.

BACKGROUND: Despite the devastating impact of mosquito-borne illnesses on human health, very little is known about mosquito developmental biology, including development of the mosquito visual system. Mosquitoes possess functional adult compound eyes as larvae, a trait that makes them an interesting model in which to study comparative developmental genetics. Here, we functionally characterize visual system development in the dengue and yellow fever vector mosquito Aedes aegypti, in which we use chitosan/siRNA nanoparticles to target the axon guidance gene semaphorin-1a (sema1a). RESULTS: Immun

Cobalt sulphide staining of optic fibres in the brain of the cricket, Gryllus campestris.

Neuronal projections from one optic lobe to other parts of the brain were stained in the cricket Gryllus campestris using the cobalt sulphide technique and Timm's sulphide-silver method. The results are: Four tracts directly connect the medulla with the lobula and medulla of the contralateral optic lobe. Direct medullar projections end mainly in the non-glomerular neuropile of the protocerebrum, but also penetrate the calyx of the mushroom bodies, pons and central body in small numbers. A few somata which send fibres into the medulla lie in the pars intercerebralis, in the protocerebrum ventra

The organization of visual pathways in the Drosophila brain.

Visual systems transform photoreceptor inputs into rich perceptual representations through hierarchical networks that extract features along parallel pathways. Although this architecture is conserved across species, how visual information is routed throughout an entire brain remains elusive in any animal. Using the male Drosophila connectome, we trace signals from photoreceptors through the optic lobes-layered, retinotopic regions containing two-thirds of the brain's neurons-and onward into the central brain. Network-based analyses reveal a multilayered architecture of pathway classes with dis

kappa-Bungarotoxin: binding of a neuronal nicotinic receptor antagonist to chick optic lobe and skeletal muscle.

kappa-Bungarotoxin, a snake venom kappa-neurotoxin, is a potent neuronal nicotinic receptor antagonist. kappa-Neurotoxins are structurally related to the long-type alpha-neurotoxins (including alpha-bungarotoxin), which often fail to block neuronal nicotinic transmission, but which are potent antagonists of nicotinic receptors found on vertebrate skeletal muscle. The binding of kappa-bungarotoxin has now been examined in homogenates of chick skeletal muscle and optic lobe. In muscle, kappa-bungarotoxin binds to nicotinic receptors with 200-fold lower affinity than does alpha-bungarotoxin. The

The effects of experimental unilateral anotia on skull development in the chick embryo. V. The development of the brain and its meningeal envelope in embryos of 9-20 days of incubation.

In a total number of 27 normal and 27 unilaterally anotic chick embryos, varying in age from 9-19 days, the morphogenetic relationships between the neurocranium on the one hand and the brain and its meningeal envelope on the other were studied. The results showed that, in general, unilateral anotia slightly interferes with the development of the bain. Only the homolateral nucleus tangentialis and cerebellar auricle proved to be underdeveloped. However, the brain of the anotic embryos progressively develops asymmetrically: In an antero-posterior and a ventro-dorsal direction abnormal flexures a

Serotonin selectively modulates visual responses of object motion detectors in Drosophila.

Serotonin (5-HT) is a hormonal messenger that confers state-level changes upon the nervous system in both humans and flies. In Drosophila, lobula columnar (LC) cells are feature-detecting neurons that project from the optic lobe to the central brain, where each population forms an anatomically distinct glomerulus with heterogeneous synaptic partners. Here, we investigated serotonin's effect on two LC populations with different 5-HT receptor expression profiles. Receptor expression does not predict neuromodulatory effects. LC15 expresses inhibitory 5-HT1A and 5-HT1B receptors, yet serotonin inc

Reciprocal Coupling of Circadian Clocks in the Compound Eye and Optic Lobe in the Cricket Gryllus bimaculatus.

The circadian system comprises multiple clocks, including central and peripheral clocks. The central clock generally governs peripheral clocks to synchronize circadian rhythms throughout the animal body. However, whether the peripheral clock influences the central clock is unclear. This issue can be addressed through a system comprising a peripheral clock (compound eye clock [CE clock]) and central clock (the optic lobe [OL] clock) in the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus. We previously found that the compound eye regulates the free-running period (τ) and the stability of locomotor rhythms driven by
