This survey is topical for clinical optometrists as the first treatment for geographic atrophy has just been approved by the Australian Therapeutics Goods Administration and may soon become available in Australia. BACKGROUND: Considering that treatments for geographic atrophy secondary to age-related macular degeneration are likely imminent, a survey of Australian optometrists was conducted to gauge their readiness in caring for people with geogr

Spectacles for the emmetropic presbyopic optometrist.

Presbyopia brings special seeing problems for an emmetropic optometrist. Incorporating the bifocal into a half-glass offers several advantages. The best parameters for this spectacle form are derived from experience, and also by comparing it to single-vision half-glasses, bifocals, and trifocals. Particular facility in both prescribing and fabricating derives from the great number of power and size relations between upper and lower segments available. One can extrapolate similar benefits in this spectacle form for other occupations and hobbies as well as for presbyopic wearers of single-vision

Applied genetics for the practicing optometrist.

A good preventive blindness program includes a strong program in genetic counseling. Optometrists can be of substantial assistance to a genetic counseling program by: 1) being informed of the various types of inherited ocular disorders, and their modes of transmission. 2) becoming aware of the presence of disorders in other members of the patient's family, and 3) encouraging the affected family members to seek genetic counseling prior to conception. This article is designed to serve as a guide for familiarizing the practicing O.D. with the various types of inheritance patterns, specific disord

Historically, blepharitis has been categorized according to multiple structural classifications, including anatomic location, duration, and etiology. The substantial overlap of symptoms and signs from the diffe

Choroidal detachments: what do optometrists need to know?

Choroidal detachments occur when there is an accumulation of fluid or blood in the suprachoroidal space, a potential space situated between the choroid and the sclera. They are an uncommon ocular pathology. The most common cause of choroidal detachment is secondary to trabeculectomy; however, there are other causes such as trauma and inflammation. Clinically, choroidal detachments may vary in presentation from asymptomatic, to very poor vision, severe ocular pain, vomiting and nausea. Ocular findings associated with choroidal detachments include serous retinal detachment, secondary angle closu

Eight corneal clinical challenges for primary care optometrists.

Since the cornea is an avascular tissue and does not possess its own elaborate system of defenses, its response to insulting agents is multifactorial and varies according to the immune response of the host, the virulence of the infecting organism, and the site of infection. An overview of clinical conditions with different etiologies is presented here, with a discussion of the various responses of the corneal tissue to a variety of ocular pathogens.

Medicare program; coverage of optometrists' services--HCFA. Final regulations.

These regulations conform existing Medicare regulations to a statutory change that expanded Medicare coverage of services furnished by optometrists to include examination services related to the condition of aphakia (absence of the natural crystalline lens of the eye). Existing regulations limit coverage of optometrists' services to dispensing services in connection with the actual fitting and provision of prosthetic lenses. The regulations are based on section 937 of the Omnibus Reconciliation Act of 1980 (Pub. L. 96-499).
