Oral-maxillary sinus fistula (oroantral fistula): clinical features and findings on multiplanar CT.

OBJECTIVE: Oroantral fistula, an abnormal communication between the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus, is infrequently diagnosed radiologically. The purpose of this study was to describe the CT findings and clinical features of oroantral fistula and to show that dental CT multiplanar reformatting programs can be instrumental in diagnosing this condition. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study included eight patients with clinically confirmed oroantral fistula or with radiologic evidence of oroantral fistula. Fistula size, degree of alveolar atrophy, nature of maxillary sinus disease, and related d

Extra-oral fistula caused by a dental implant.

Dental implantation has become an important procedure for both dental treatment and head and neck reconstructive surgery. However, this useful technique sometimes results in peri-implantitis. We describe a rare complication of peri-implantitis in the maxilla which extended to the soft tissue and caused an extra-oral fistula above the alar region. The patient underwent the placement of dental implants in the maxilla 8 years earlier. Radiography showed osteolysis of the maxilla and implant exposure. After the implants were removed, the patient was fitted with a conventional fixed partial denture

Cholecystoduodenal fistula identified on oral contrast-enhanced ultrasound.

We describe a case of a cholecystoduodenal fistula (CDF) diagnosed using oral contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). CDF is a rare type of biliary-enteric fistulation in which an abnormal communication forms between the gallbladder and duodenum. CDF are usually found in older patients, in the context of chronic cholecystitis, and can be associated with serious consequences. Given the non-specific presentation and limitations of the various imaging modalities, CDF are notoriously difficult to diagnose. CEUS is a recognised technique predominantly deployed for imaging following intravenous adminis

Cholecystoduodenal fistula: ultrasonographic diagnosis with oral gastrointestinal ultrasound contrast medium.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the value of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of cholecystoduodenal fistulas (CDFs). METHODS: Twenty-three patients with calculous cholecystitis were suspected to have CDFs on pre-operative ultrasonography. Oral gastrointestinal (GI) ultrasound contrast medium was infused to dynamically observe the presence or absence of a CDF, and the results were compared with the operative findings. The criterion for ultrasonic diagnosis of CDF was dynamic observation of the contrast medium entering the gallbladder through the fistula orifice. RESULTS: Of the 23 enrolled patients,

Oral feeding outcomes in infants with esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore oral feeding outcomes in infants born with type-C esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF). METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of all infants born between January 2005 and December 2015 undergoing surgery for type-C EA/TEF at the University of Alberta Hospital was performed. RESULTS: Fifty-seven infants were identified, of which 61.4% were exclusively orally feeding at discharge home. Variables anticipated to predict oral feeding were explored. Only 46% of babies with a structural cardiac anomaly had exclusive oral feeding

Use of a submandibular gland flap for closure of oral cutaneous fistula.

We reported a rare case of submandibular oral cutaneous fistula (OCF) in a 27-year-old female. A submandibular gland flap (SMGF) was prepared after fistula resection to fill the dead space under the mouth floor. Based on this case report and a literature review, we discussed the pathogenesis and treatment of OCF, and compared the differences between the SMGF and other types of flaps.

Paget's disease of the bone presenting as an apparent oral antral fistula.

Paget's disease of the bone is a chronic, slowly progressive condition commonly evidenced by bowing of the legs and enlargement of the skull. Its lesions are usually multiple and result in thickened but weakened areas within the involved bones. A case of Paget's disease presented as an apparent oral antral fistula. The patient also exhibited other signs and symptoms of the disease.

Oral adhesions associated with cleft lip and palate and lip fistulae.

Three cases of congenital strand-like adhesions between the upper and lower gum pads associated with cleft lip and palate and lower lip fistulae are reported. A consideration of the literature would suggest that this may represent an autosomal dominant trait with variable penetrance and expressivity though a positive family history was found in only one case. The adhesions may have arisen by persistence of the oropharyngeal membrane or anomalous fusion of adjacent epithelial surfaces, the latter seeming rather more likely in the present series. The clinical implications are discussed.

Nasal oral fistula revealing Langerhans´ cell histiocytosis in adult patient: case report.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare systemic disease caused by proliferation of mature histiocytes; its association to histiocyto fibroma is rarely reported. It rarely affects adults. We report a case of systemic LCH, in an adult patient with osteolytic lesion causing a fistula between the left nasal cavity and hard palate, involving the bone, lung, lymph node and associated to multiple histiocyto fibroma. The patient was operating for a fistula, and he was treated by chemotherapy and corticosteroids. Langerhans´ cell histiocytosis is a rare case, especially in adult patient. The dia

Esophagobronchial fistula complicated by esophageal achalasia treated by per-oral endoscopic myotomy.

A 48-year-old man who underwent balloon dilation for esophageal achalasia more than 20 years prior developed severe dysphagia and cough during mealtimes. Endoscopic findings showed a markedly dilated esophagus with residue, narrowing of the esophagogastric junction (EGJ), and a fistula in the middle thoracic esophagus. Esophagography showed narrowing of the EGJ and outflow of contrast from the esophagus to the bronchus. In addition, computed tomography showed marked esophageal dilatation and diffuse granular shading in both lungs. Based on these imaging findings, the patient was diagnosed with

Orocutaneous Fistula Formation in Free Flap Reconstruction for Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to identify the risk factors associated with orocutaneous fistula (OCF) formation after free flap reconstruction for oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). METHODS: Patients undergoing free flap reconstruction for oral SCC were retrospectively enrolled. The relationship between clinicopathologic variables and OCF formation was analyzed by univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS: A total of 87 OCFs occurred in 856 patients. Univariate analysis revealed cachexia, tumor at the tongue/floor of the mouth (TFOM), T4 stage, preoperative hemoglobin level, pull-

Oral tacrolimus (FK 506) in Crohn's disease complicated by fistulae of the perineum.

We describe the cases of two patients with Crohn's disease affected by severe perineal fistulae resistant to conventional therapies, successfully treated with FK 506, a new immunomodulatory drug. It is well absorbed from diseased bowel and preliminary experiences have indicated its short-term use in complicated Crohn's disease. The first patient was a 24-year-old male with perineal fistula and severe skin ulceration (8 cm of external opening diameter). He had undergone colectomy and ileostomy because of severe pancolitis refractory to medical treatment and had been treated with azathioprine an

Clinical evaluation of a two-incision fistula technique for the treatment of oral ranulas.

Oral ranulas are caused by extravasation of mucus from the sublingual glands, and the preferred treatment varies. We have developed a two-incision fistula operation for their treatment, and in this clinical study we have evaluated the efficacy and safety of this approach. Twelve patients with oral ranulas confirmed by fine needle aspiration cytology were enrolled and gave their consent to be treated by our new technique. The clinical outcomes and complications were evaluated during a period that ranged from 8-24 months. Nine ranulas became smaller and gradually disappeared, and there were no c

Sub-lingual oral fistulas in free-living stitchbirds (Notiomystis cincta).

Sub-lingual oral fistulas are a consistently observed lesion affecting the New Zealand stitchbird (hihi: Notiomystis cincta). This lesion, which has not been reported in other species, is usually only recognized when the tongue protrudes below the bird's mandible from a hole in the oral-cavity floor. In this study, we surveyed the prevalence of oral fistulas in a free-living population of stitchbirds on Tiritiri Matangi Island in 2002, 2003 and 2005. Between surveys, individuals with a fistula were caught and the progress of their lesion was monitored. The majority of birds with a fistula had
