Point-of-care ultrasound for oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

Point-of-care ultrasound is an ultrasound examination that is made at the bedside by the examining clinician in the Accident and Emergency department, clinic, ward, or operating theatre, and it has been growing in popularity since it was first introduced in the 1990s. It is used as an adjunct to clinical examination to aid diagnosis or treatment. We have carried out a pilot survey to assess whether oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the United Kingdom either need or desire to make such an examination. We present the results of our survey and discuss the uses and benefits of point-of-care ultra

Empowering surgeons: will artificial intelligence change oral and maxillofacial surgery?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) can enhance the precision and efficiency of diagnostics and treatments in oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS), leveraging advanced computational technologies to mimic intelligent human behaviors. The study aimed to examine the current state of AI in the OMS literature and highlight the urgent need for further research to optimize AI integration in clinical practice and enhance patient outcomes. A scoping review of journals related to OMS focused on OMS-related applications. PubMed was searched using terms "artificial intelligence", "convolutional networks", "neura

Silicone-associated tissue reaction: a dilemma for oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

A case report of cystic encapsulation of a silicone elastomer (Silastic: Polydimethyl Siloxane, Dow Corning Ltd) orbital floor implant is described. This is a known, but poorly understood complication of implanted silicone elastomer. Comparison is made with other complications associated with Silastic, and attention drawn to the phenomenon of excessive collagen formation demonstrated by the thick collagen cyst lining, analogous to fibrous 'cricket ball' breast implant encapsulation, which may be peculiar to certain predisposed individuals.

Perceptions of mandibular asymmetry among orthodontists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, and laypersons.

BACKGROUND: Facial asymmetry is one reason orthodontic patients seek treatment. This study assessed the effect of mandibular asymmetry on facial esthetics and treatment needs perceived by laypersons, orthodontists, and maxillofacial surgeons. MATERIALS AND METHOD: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, the frontal image of a model was captured and symmetrized from the facial midline using Adobe Photoshop software. The mandible was rotated 0°-8° with 1° intervals. Images were presented to 41 laypersons, 39 orthodontists, and 29 surgeons using an online questionnaire. The observers rated ea

Neurovascular pains: implications of migraine for the oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

Epidemiologic studies have shown that migraine headaches are a common finding in the general population, often associated with a high degree of disability. Additionally, migraine has a reported comorbidity with other medical conditions, most notably with chronic pains, such as temporomandibular disorders. The pathophysiologic mechanisms involved with migraine are suggestive of an increased and prolonged hyperexcitability to stimuli, especially within the trigeminal distribution. Because migraine is mediated by branches of the trigeminal nerve it has the potential to mimic other types of pains,

Temporal bone fractures: a review for the oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

Fracture of the temporal bone is, by definition, a fracture of the skull base. Even though the oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMS) may not provide definitive management of temporal bone fractures or their sequelae, a working knowledge of this area is important for any surgeon participating in the care of patients with craniomaxillofacial trauma, because temporal bone fractures are often associated with injuries to other areas of the craniomaxillofacial skeleton and because these fractures are relatively frequent. In many centers, particularly community hospitals, the OMS may be the primary pr

American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon's Position Paper on Oral Mucosal Dysplasia.

Oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) of the oral mucosa include leukoplakia, erythroplakia, erythroleukoplakia, lichen planus, and oral lichenoid lesions, each with varying incidences of dysplastic disease at the time of presentation and each with observed incidences of malignant transformation over time. The primary goal of the management of dysplasia, therefore, includes their early detection and treatment prior to malignant transformation. The recognition and management of these OPMDs and an understanding of their potential progression to oral squamous cell carcinoma will reduce the

Tissue banking safety: caveats and precautions for the oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

Oral and maxillofacial reconstructive surgeons using allogeneic tissues have expressed justifiable concern over the safety of these tissues as they relate to the transmission of infectious disease. This report reviews cases of infectious disease transmission from inadequately screened donors of allogeneic tissues, as well as those related to improper sterilization and cataloging of these tissues. It is concluded that good judgment and attention to good science on the part of the tissue bank as well as the surgeon can maximize the ability to place contamination-free specimens, thereby avoiding
