BACKGROUND: Orbital diseases in childhood are rare and differ from orbital lesions occurring in adults. Most paediatric orbital tumours are benign, but rapid tumour growth can nevertheless threaten vision or lives.
PATIENTS: Retrospectively, we analyzed data of 41 consecutive patients with orbital disease, treated in our hospital between 2000 and 2004. The data was evaluated using descriptive statistics and case reports.
RESULTS: All children (from neonatals up to 16 years of age) with orbital disease were included in the study. The most common benign disease of the entire collective was an

Orbital diseases are common in dogs and cats and can present on emergency due to the acute onset of many of these issues. The difficulty with diagnosis and therapy of orbital disease is that the location of the problem is not readily visible. The focus of this article is on recognizing classical clinical presentations of orbital disease, which are typically exophthalmos, strabismus, enophthalmos, proptosis, or intraconal swelling. After the orbital disease is confirmed, certain characteristics such as pain on opening the mouth, acute vs. chronic swelling, and involvement of nearby structures c

INTRODUCTION: Nontraumatic orbital diseases only exceptionally require emergency treatment. In this paper an emergency is considered when the diagnosis and/or treatment must be done within a maximal period of 1 week.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients with nontraumatic orbital diseases from the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Lausanne and from the office of one of the authors (N.D.) over the last 35 years were studied, in view of their degree of emergency. Data from 77 patients (28 females and 49 males), aged from birth to 85 years, were collected.
RESULTS: Idiopathic infla

The understanding of 'pseudotumors' has significantly changed with the advent of modern imaging techniques by which the tissues affected in the orbit can be identified, and nonspecific orbital inflammatory disease is classified according to the tissue involved. Twenty cases of nonspecific orbital inflammatory diseases were treated between July 1987 and September 1991. Eight patients had myositis, 6 had diffuse disease, 2 each had dacryoadenitis, periscleritis and perineuritis. Involvement of all four recti in one patient and isolated superior rectus and superior oblique each in 2 others are th

Development of diagnostic methods for orbital diseases have practically revolutionized the approach to the patient with orbital disease. These newer methods have helped the clinician to improve the accuracy of the clinical diagnosis prior to biopsy, to localize the area to be biopsied, and to prevent inappropriate surgery. These techniques have also allowed the pathologist to render more definitive diagnosis. These methods include ultrasound, computerized axial tomography, nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, fine-needle aspiration biopsy, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry and electron micro

Diagnosis and therapy of orbital diseases is an interdisciplinary challenge, in which i.e. otorhinolaryngologists, ophthalmologists, radiologists, radiation therapists, maxillo-facial surgeons, endocrinologists, and pediatricians are involved. This review article describes frequent diseases which both, otolaryngologists and ophthalmologists are concerned with in interdisciplinary settings. In particular the inflammatory diseases of the orbit including orbital complications, autoimmunological diseases of the orbit including Grave´s orbitopathy, and primary and secondary tumors of the orbit are

BACKGROUND: Graves' hyperthyroidism and its associated Graves' orbitopathy are common autoimmune disorders associated with significant adverse health impact. Current standard treatments have limitations regarding efficacy and safety, and most do not specifically target the pathogenic mechanisms. We aim to review the latest development of targeted immunotherapies in these two closely related disorders.
SUMMARY: Targeted immunotherapies of Graves' hyperthyroidism have recently demonstrated clinical efficacy in early phase clinical studies. They include rituximab, an anti-CD20 monoclonal antibod

The aim of the present study was to observe the histopathological changes of immunoglobulin G4-related orbital diseases (IgG4-RODs), summarize the clinical manifestations and imaging features of the IgG4-RODs of the eyelids and explore the early diagnosis of IgG4-RODs. Between June 2011 and May 2015, 23 patients with non-specific orbital inflammation in the Department of Ophthalmology at the First Central Hospital of Tianjin were recruited. The serum IgG4 titer in 9 patients ranged from 4.58 to 46.70 g/l (reference value, 0.03-2.01 g/l), with an average value of 21.93±2.18 g/l. Notably, the de

Visual loss associated with orbital and sinuses diseases is mainly due to infectious processes, trauma and neoplasm. From 1975 to 1983, we have encountered 34 such cases. The most common cause in our series was infectious processes, either due to aerobic or anaerobic bacteria or fungi (aspergillosis and phycomycosis). Iatrogenic trauma resulting in complete unilateral irreversible blindness was the second most common etiology in the series of cases that came to our attention for several reasons. Three of our patients with complete blindness, even with documented absence of light perception, se

The avoidance of mistakes by humans is achieved through continuous learning, error correction, and experience accumulation. This process is known to be both time-consuming and laborious, often involving numerous detours. In order to assist humans in their learning endeavors, ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) has been developed as a collection of large language models (LLMs) capable of generating responses that resemble human-like answers to a wide range of problems. In this study, we sought to assess the potential of LLMs as assistants in addressing queries related to orbital diseas

INTRODUCTION: Orbital cellulitis is an uncommon but serious condition that carries with it a potential for significant morbidity.
OBJECTIVE: This review highlights the pearls and pitfalls of orbital cellulitis, including presentation, diagnosis, and management in the emergency department (ED) based on current evidence.
DISCUSSION: Orbital cellulitis refers to infection of the globe and surrounding soft tissues posterior to the orbital septum. Orbital cellulitis is typically caused by local spread from sinusitis but can also be caused by local trauma or dental infection. It is more common in

PURPOSE: This study investigates the accuracy of either computerized tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the evaluation of various orbital diseases.
METHODS: We collected 126 CT scans and 65 MRI scans from 144 subjects and asked two radiologists to interpret the images without clinical information. Images included 14 with a clinical diagnosis of orbital infection, 144 with orbital inflammation, and 33 with orbital neoplasm. The inflammatory diseases included thyroid eye disease (TED, n = 69), non-specific orbital inflammation (NSOI, n = 44), IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD,

PURPOSE: Total exenteration of the orbit with removal of the eye globe and surrounding tissues is most frequently indicated for malignant tumors. The indications for exenteration of the orbit for benign orbital lesion are rare. Not adequately treated infection of the orbit by systemic antibiotics can lead to destructive changes of soft tissues in the region of the orbit and partial exenteration with eyelid sparing technique is necessary.
DESIGN: Retrospective case series.
METHODS: Data of all patients between 2010 and 2018 who underwent exenteration of the orbit for periocular lesions infilt

This article provides an overview of rare orbital diseases. Congenital malformations, inflammatory diseases, benign and malignant neoplasias are described. Although it represents a relatively small area of the body the orbit contains multiple different tissues. Therefore, a great variety of diseases can be found within the orbital space. That is the reason, why both the completeness and the level of detail in the description of particular diseases must be somewhat limited. Nevertheless, clinical manifestations, important aspects of diagnosis, treatment strategies, and, when specific data are a

Inflammatory conditions belong to the most important diseases of the orbit. Children and adolescents are mostly affected and the most common cause is secondary pathogen invasion from acute sinusitis. However in adults most cases involve idiopathic orbital inflammation, previously termed pseudotumor orbitae. Clinical presentation may include painful exophthalmus, skin redness and warming, chemosis and disturbed eye motility. The challenge for imaging investigations, mainly a combination of CT scanning and MRI, is to distinguish inflammatory from malignant conditions, to define the extent of les
