Synthetic Tetraploid of Oncidium crispum Lodd. (Orchidaceae).

In ornamental plants, artificial polyploidization has enabled the creation of new cultivars. Due to their high commercial value in the international flower market and their ornamental characteristics, such as the shape, size, color, and durability of their flower, orchids have received great attention in studies of artificial polyploidization. Here we described the protocol used for polyploid induction in Oncidium crispum, an epiphyte species native of southeastern Brazil, of great ornamental interest and widely sold in flower shops. The species stands out for having inflorescence with large f

FEATURES OF EMBRYONIC DEVELOPMENT OF DIENIA OPHRYDIS (ORCHIDACEAE).

On example of Dienia ophrydis (J. Köenig) Seidenf (Orchidaceae), we have described a new type of embryogenesis of orchids — Dienia-type, which is differs from Liparis-type learned earlier in the tribe Malaxideae. Embryogenesis of Dienia-type is characterized by 1) the development of a single-celled suspensor formed by cb-derivative, 2) linear arrangement of germ cells in the tetrad stage, 3) the special structure of the embryo in the stages of tetrads and octants (l, lR, m, ci, cb), and 4) the absence of ci and cb cell division. The convergent similarity of embryogenesis of Dienia- and Caryoph

Lipoidal labellar secretions in Maxillaria ruiz & pav. (Orchidaceae).

The labella of Maxillaria acuminata Lindl., M. cerifera Barb. Rodr. and M. notylioglossa Rchb.f., all members of the M. acuminata alliance, produce a viscid wax-like secretion. Histochemical analysis revealed that the chemical composition of the secretion is similar in all three species, consisting largely of lipid and protein. Light microscopy and low-vacuum scanning electron microscopy were used to investigate the secretory process. In a fourth taxon, M. cf. notylioglossa, transmission electron microscopy showed that lipid bodies are associated with smooth endoplasmic reticulum or occur as p

Ceratostylis wanrosdyi (Orchidaceae), a new species from Peninsular Malaysia.

Ceratostylis wanrosdyi is described and illustrated as a new species from the mossy montane forest of Cameron Highlands, Malaysia. This epiphytic orchid is characterised by its peduncles, which are nearly as long as the leaves, and an entire, oblong-lanceolate labellum. Although the new species resembles C. radiata and C. pulchella in having white flowers, it can be distinguished by its peduncle length and labellum morphology. A detailed taxonomic description, figures, comparisons with closely related species, and a revised identification key to the species of Ceratostylis in Peninsular Malays

Gastrodiamicrochila (Orchidaceae, Epidendroideae), a new species from Brunei Darussalam.

A new orchid species, Gastrodiamicrochila is described and illustrated. The species was found in a mixed dipterocarp forest in the Belait district, Brunei Darussalam, northern Borneo in 2024. It is distinct from most Gastrodia species in western Malesia by its small lip and column, and presence of the smooth cushion-like tissue on the inner side of lateral sepals. Gastrodiamicrochila is only the second species of Gastrodia recorded for Brunei Darussalam and the seventh known species for Borneo. A determination key for all Gastrodia species occurring in western Malesia is also provided.

Morphology of floral papillae in Maxillaria Ruiz & Pav. (Orchidaceae).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The labellar papillae and trichomes of Maxillaria Ruiz & Pav. show great diversity. Although papillae also occur upon other parts of the flower (e.g. column and anther cap), these have not yet been studied. Labellar trichomes of Maxillaria are useful in taxonomy, but hitherto the taxonomic value of floral papillae has not been assessed. The aim of this paper is to describe the range of floral papillae found in Maxillaria and to determine whether papillae are useful as taxonomic characters. METHODS: Light microscopy, histochemistry, low-vacuum scanning and transmission ele

Taxonomic revision of Epipactis Zinn (Orchidaceae) on the Korean Peninsula.

The genus Epipactis (Orchidaceae) is widely distributed across Europe, Asia, tropical Africa, and North America. In Korea, only Epipactis thunbergii and Epipactis papillosa have traditionally been recognized, and the taxonomy of the genus has not been critically reassessed. Based on examination of protologues, herbarium specimens, and field observations, Epipactis xanthophaea, previously misidentified as E. thunbergii, is confirmed to occur in Korea and is recognized as a distinct species. Accordingly, three species of Epipactis (E. thunbergii, E. xanthophaea, and E. papillosa) are recognized

Floral nectary and osmophore of Epipactis helleborine (L.) Crantz (Orchidaceae).

The analysis of flowers collected at different stages of anthesis provides strong evidence to conclude that the shell-shaped hypochile and the knobs of epichile form a nectary. The scent comes from the aromatic constituents of nectar and the epichile tissue and the apices of all tepals (osmophores). The comparison between pollinated and unpollinated flowers revealed that the anthesis of unpollinated flowers lasted up to the 16th day. The nectariferous secretory cells formed single-layered epidermis and several layers of underlying parenchyma built by small, isodiametric cells with thin walls a

Microbial diversity in the floral nectar of seven Epipactis (Orchidaceae) species.

Floral nectar of animal-pollinated plants is commonly infested with microorganisms, yet little is known about the microorganisms inhabiting the floral nectar of orchids. In this study, we investigated microbial communities occurring in the floral nectar of seven Epipactis (Orchidaceae) species. Culturable bacteria and yeasts were isolated and identified by partially sequencing the small subunit (SSU) ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene and the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene, respectively. Using three different culture media, we found that bacteria were common inhabitants of the flora

Characterization of Fruit and Seed Development in the Genera Anacamptis and Serapias (Orchidaceae).

Developmental changes in the anatomy along with the maturation from ovaries to fruits and ovules to seeds were analyzed in two terrestrial species of the related genera Anacamptis and Serapias (Orchideae, Orchidaceae), using light and scanning electron microscopy. Our results show that the proliferation of the placentae and the differentiation of the ovules are well developed at the beginning of the anthesis. After fertilization of the ovules, a cavity of free air space is formed surrounding the embryo, contributing to the later buoyancy of seeds in both genera. At the last days of their devel

Comparative reproductive biology and pollinator specificity among sympatric Gomesa (Orchidaceae: Oncidiinae).

The incredible pollination mechanisms displayed by orchid flowers has inspired biologists over the centuries. Based on the intriguing flower structures, the relationship among orchid species and their pollinators has been frequently regarded as very specialised. Given that visits on flowers pollinated by oil-collecting bees are regularly rare, and in Oncidiinae the flowers frequently attractexclusively species that act as effective pollinators, the comparative reproductive biology and pollinator specificity of two sympatric Gomesa (G. varicosa and G. montana; Oncidiinae) were analysedbased on

Floral elaiophores in Lockhartia Hook. (Orchidaceae: Oncidiinae): their distribution, diversity and anatomy.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: A significant proportion of orchid species assigned to subtribe Oncidiinae produce floral oil as a food reward that attracts specialized bee pollinators. This oil is produced either by glabrous glands (epithelial elaiophores) or by tufts of secretory hairs (trichomal elaiophores). Although the structure of epithelial elaiophores in the Oncidiinae has been well documented, trichomal elaiophores are less common and have not received as much attention. Only trichomal elaiophores occur in the genus Lockhartia, and their distribution and structure are surveyed here for the firs

Comparative plastid genomics of Gastrochilus (Orchidaceae) with insights into molecular markers and phylogeny.

BACKGROUND: Gastrochilus (Orchidaceae) is a genus of epiphytic orchids valued for horticultural and medicinal purposes. However, the structural and evolutionary features of its plastid genomes have not been systematically examined. Here, we characterize the complete plastid genomes of 23 Gastrochilus species, elucidating structural features and key variations to provide new insights into their evolutionary significance. RESULTS: The plastid genomes showed a typical quadripartite structure, ranging from 146,183 to 148,666 bp in length. Each genome encodes 120 genes, comprising 74 protein-codin

Ethnomedicinal Knowledge of Trichocentrum ascendens (Orchidaceae) in an Indigenous Region of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Trichocentrum ascendens, commonly known as "cola de rata", is an orchid traditionally used by Indigenous communities to remove warts and heal wounds and in cultural cleansing rituals ("limpia"). However, additional medicinal uses preserved by the Chinantec people of Oaxaca, Mexico, remain largely undocumented and are at risk of disappearing, as this knowledge is now held by only a few individuals. This study gathered information on the therapeutic applications of T. ascendens in the Chinantla region through semi-structured interviews with key collaborators. Information was collected regarding

Changes in Foliar Water Uptake Caused by Water Stress in Cattleya Lindl. (Orchidaceae).

In response to water restrictions imposed by the epiphytic environment, orchids have developed strategies to increase water-use efficiency, such as the expression of Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) and the foliar water uptake (FWU). In a climate change scenario, FWU may emerge as a strategy to reduce water stress during drought. In this study, we propose that, in Cattleya forbesii Lindl. and Cattleya guttata Lindl., drought alters the leaf water balance, increases CAM expression, and may consequently increase the FWU rate. To test this hypothesis, drought stress was induced by restricting w
