Environmental health : a global access science source2017eng
This review summarises existing evidence on the impact of organic food on human health. It compares organic vs. conventional food production with respect to parameters important to human health and discusses the potential impact of organic management practices with an emphasis on EU conditions. Organic food consumption may reduce the risk of allergic disease and of overweight and obesity, but the evidence is not conclusive due to likely residual confounding, as consumers of organic food tend to have healthier lifestyles overall. However, animal experiments suggest that identically composed fee

As global health care demand continues to increase, medicinal plant productivity must progress without exhausting critical environmental resources. Hence, it is important to explore practices that can improve the quality, safety, and sustainability of medicinal plants, as well as ecological stability. Organic farming has recently gained significance as a sustainable cultivation alternative owing to increased awareness of the adverse effects of conventional cultivation method. Here, this study aimed to investigate the feasibility of organic farming as a solution for sustainable cultivation of m

To provide an overview of anthropogenic contaminants in liquid organic fertilizers (LOFs), products from four biogas plants in Kyushu, Japan, were analyzed for a wide range of contaminants, including copper, cadmium, tributyltin (TBT), dibutyltin (DBT), perfluorooctane sulfonate, 952 semi-volatile organic compounds, and 89 antibiotics. The highest concentrations of copper (31.1 mg/L) and cadmium (0.08 mg/L) were found in LOFs from the Hita biogas plant. Only ofloxacin and sulfapyridine were detected in total 89 antibiotics screened. TBT, DBT, and perfluorooctane sulfonate were present at low c

Occupational respiratory hazards in agriculture are varied and widespread, and farm workers have been found to have high rates of respiratory disability compared with other industrial sectors. The common denominator in most agricultural exposures is organic dust. The author reviews agricultural respiratory syndromes and their diseases, including acute febrile syndromes, asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis and chronic bronchitis and airway obstruction.

BACKGROUND: Production systems that aim to reduce waste and promote the reuse of materials contribute to more sustainable food systems. However, these approaches can also lead to the accumulation and recirculation of chemical hazards from organic waste to the soil and, ultimately, to food. To address these risks and assess the safety and effectiveness of waste reuse in agriculture, non-target screening (NTS) and suspect screening (SS) analytical methodologies are essential, as they enable the detection of chemical residues, pollutants, and unintended by-products in soil, crops, and compost.

Pesticides are applied in large quantities to agroecosystems worldwide. To date, few studies assessed the occurrence of pesticides in organically managed agricultural soils, and it is unresolved whether these pesticide residues affect soil life. We screened 100 fields under organic and conventional management with an analytical method containing 46 pesticides (16 herbicides, 8 herbicide transformation products, 17 fungicides, seven insecticides). Pesticides were found in all sites, including 40 organic fields. The number of pesticide residues was two times and the concentration nine times high

Regenerative organic agriculture (ROA) combines ecological and organic principles to promote soil health, biodiversity, and long-term sustainability. This narrative review explores the connection between soil quality, food nutritional value, and human health, highlighting how ROA can enhance phytochemical content and reduce harmful residues in plant-based foods. Empirical studies report increases in vitamin C, zinc, and polyphenols in crops such as leafy greens, grapes, and carrots grown under regenerative systems, along with reductions in nitrates and pesticide residues. We summarize recent l

Cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAPP) comprises an ensemble of ionized gas, neutral particles, and/or reactive species. Electricity is frequently used to produce CAPP via a variety of techniques, including plasma jets, corona discharges, dielectric barrier discharges, and glow discharges. The type and flow rates of the carrier gas(es), temperature, pressure, and vacuum can all be altered to control the desired properties of the CAPP. Since a few decades ago, CAPP has become a widely used technology with applications in every walk of life. The plasma activated liquid mediums like water, ethan

Recycling residues is a sustainable alternative to improve soil structure and increase the stock of nutrients. However, information about the magnitude and duration of disturbances caused by crop and industrial wastes on soil microbial community structure and function is still scarce. The objective of this study was to investigate how added residues from industry and crops together with nitrogen (N) fertiliser affect the microbial community structure and function, and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. The experimental sugarcane field had the following treatments: (I) control with nitrogen, phosph

Agricultural practices pose threats to biotic diversity in freshwater systems with increasing use of glyphosate-based herbicides for weed control and animal waste for soil amendment becoming common in many regions. Over the past two decades, these particular agricultural trends have corresponded with marked declines in populations of fish and mussel species in the Upper Conasauga River watershed in Georgia/Tennessee, USA. To investigate the potential role of agriculture in the population declines, surface waters and sediments throughout the basin were tested for toxicity and analyzed for glyph

The occurrence of organic pollutants in soil is a major environmental concern. These compounds can reach the soil in different ways. Point sources, related to pesticides that are used intentionally, can be applied directly to the soil, or reach the soil indirectly due to application to the aerial parts of crops. On the other hand, non-point sources, which reach soils collaterally during irrigation and/or fertilization, or due to the proximity of plots to industrialized urban centers. Long-range transport of global organic pollutants must also be taken into account. In this study, 218 pesticide

INTRODUCTION: Agricultural management practices strongly influence soil microbiomes, with broad implications for ecosystem function. Yet, the combined phenotypic and compositional dynamics of rhizosphere microbial communities across conventional and organic farming systems remain poorly characterized, underscoring the need for integrated approaches to understand how management decisions drive microbial assembly and function.
METHODS: We investigated microbial communities associated with conventionally and organically cultivated horticultural crops across multiple farms in New York State. To c

The increasing use of alternative therapies that rely on organically grown foods has renewed interest in the relationship between agricultural methods and food quality. The purpose of this article is to review the literature produced over the last 50 years comparing the nutritional quality of organic with conventional crops. Whereas few studies have been conducted, there is a trend in the data indicating higher nutrient content in organically grown crops. This phenomenon is possibly due to a higher water content in conventional crops, which causes nutrient dilution. For individual nutrients, e

Microplastic (MP) contamination threatens soil health, yet effective remediation strategies remain underexplored. This study aimed to address this gap by evaluating the impact of biochar and organic matter on the properties of MP-contaminated soils. Sandy loam (SL) and clay loam (CL) soils were contaminated with 1% (w/w) low-density polyethylene MPs and amended with organic matter (rice husk, compost, cow manure) or their biochar at 2% and 5% (v/v) rates in a 100-day incubation experiment. Results showed that biochar reduced pH to 7.2 (vs. 7.8 in control) and EC by 55.8% in SL, while increasin

In 1994, the Food and Agriculture Organization undertook to revitalise its activities in the control of transboundary animal disease by establishing a new special programme known as the Emergency Prevention System (EMPRES) against transboundary animal and plant pests and diseases. The emphasis of the EMPRES livestock component is placed on pre-empting outbreaks and losses experienced by agriculture through the enhancement of local capacity to detect and react rapidly to plague events. EMPRES concentrates on the co-ordination of the Global Rinderpest Eradication Programme--a time-bound eradicat

Nitrogen (N) and organic-source fertilizers in agriculture are important to sustain crop production for feeding the growing global population. However, their use can result in significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), which are important climate drivers. This review discusses the interactive effects, uncovering both additive and suppressive outcomes of emissions under various soil and climatic conditions. In addition to examining the effects of nitrogen and the nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), it is crucial to comprehen

Agricultural runoff is a significant contributor to nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) pollution in water bodies. Limited information is available about the molecular characteristics of the dissolved organic N (DON) and P (DOP) species in the agricultural runoff and surface waters. We employed Fourier Transform-Ion Cyclotron Resonance-Mass Spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) to investigate the changes in the molecular characteristics of DON and DOP at three watershed positions (upstream water, runoff from agricultural fields, and downstream waters). Across three watershed locations, more-bioavailable compou
