Genetically modified organisms and visceral leishmaniasis.

Vaccination is the most effective method of preventing infectious diseases. Since the eradication of small pox in 1976, many other potentially life compromising if not threatening diseases have been dealt with subsequently. This event was a major leap not only in the scientific world already burdened with many diseases but also in the mindset of the common man who became more receptive to novel treatment options. Among the many protozoan diseases, the leishmaniases have emerged as one of the largest parasite killers of the world, second only to malaria. There are three types of leishmaniasis n

Detection and traceability of genetically modified organisms in the food production chain.

Both labelling and traceability of genetically modified organisms are current issues that are considered in trade and regulation. Currently, labelling of genetically modified foods containing detectable transgenic material is required by EU legislation. A proposed package of legislation would extend this labelling to foods without any traces of transgenics. These new legislations would also impose labelling and a traceability system based on documentation throughout the food and feed manufacture system. The regulatory issues of risk analysis and labelling are currently harmonised by Codex Alim

Ferrets and genetically modified ferrets as model organisms in biomedical research: a review.

Domestic ferrets have served as experimental animals for over a century, offering a balance between practicality and biological relevance while bridging the gap between rodent and non-human primate models. Their anatomical and physiological similarities to humans, particularly in the respiratory and nervous systems, make ferrets an invaluable model for biomedical research across various disciplines. Recent advances in genome-editing technologies have enabled the efficient creation of genetically modified (GM) ferrets, significantly expanding their applications in basic and translational resear

Statistical framework for detection of genetically modified organisms based on Next Generation Sequencing.

Because the number and diversity of genetically modified (GM) crops has significantly increased, their analysis based on real-time PCR (qPCR) methods is becoming increasingly complex and laborious. While several pioneers already investigated Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) as an alternative to qPCR, its practical use has not been assessed for routine analysis. In this study a statistical framework was developed to predict the number of NGS reads needed to detect transgene sequences, to prove their integration into the host genome and to identify the specific transgene event in a sample with k

Case studies on genetically modified organisms (GMOs): Potential risk scenarios and associated health indicators.

Within the frame of the EU-funded MARLON project, background data were reviewed to explore the possibility of measuring health indicators during post-market monitoring for potential effects of feeds, particularly genetically modified (GM) feeds, on livestock animal health, if applicable. Four case studies (CSs) of potential health effects on livestock were framed and the current knowledge of a possible effect of GM feed was reviewed. Concerning allergenicity (CS-1), there are no case-reports of allergic reactions or immunotoxic effects resulting from GM feed consumption as compared with non-GM

[Genetically Modified Pigs as Organ Donors: Challenges and Prospects].

Organ transplantation is a treatment method for various organ failures and other severe pathologies, applied in critical cases to save a patient's life. However, there is a severe shortage of donor organs world-wide, resulting in hundreds of thousands of patients being unable to receive the organs they need in time. One possible solution to this problem is xenotransplantation-transplanting organs from animals to humans. Experiments in xenotransplantation began in the mid-1960s, with primates considered as the first potential donors. However, for a number of reasons, they proved unsuitable as a

Quantitative and qualitative analysis of three DNA extraction methods from soybean, maize, and canola oils and investigation of the presence of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

The objective of this study was to develop a DNA-based method for the identification and tracking of edible oils, which is important for health management. Three different DNA extraction methods (CTAB, MBST kit, and manual hexane-based method) were used to obtain high-purity DNA from crude and refined soybean, maize, and canola oils. PCR was then conducted using specific primers to identify the presence of genes related to each oil type and to assess transgenicity. The results showed that DNA was present in crude and refined oils, but in very low amounts. However, using method 3 for DNA extrac

Potential use of genetically modified pigs as organ donors for transplantation into humans.

1. Transplantation is currently viewed as a successful treatment for end-stage organ failure. Its more widespread use is severely limited by a shortage of human organ donors. This has stimulated the scientific and medical communities to look at the potential use of animals to solve this problem. For a number of reasons, the pig appears to be the preferred species. 2. The initial immunological problem encountered in pig-to-primate transplantation is a process of hyperacute rejection, which is mediated by the binding of antibodies to the graft endothelium followed by the activation of the comple

Genetically modified Escherichia coli for colorimetric detection of inorganic and organic Hg compounds.

A sensitive colorimetric bacterial system was developed for the detection of Hg(II) and organomercury compounds. The bioactive species, a recombinant Escherichia coli, produces proportionally elevated levels of the enzyme beta-galactosidase with increasing amounts of Hg. This is due to a reporter plasmid which carriers a Hg(II)-inducible promoter (mer promoter) from the Hg resistance transposon Tn501 regulating the transcription of a promoterless lacZ gene. Additionally, a pMB1 origin of replication without the natural RNA polymerase start site is fused downstream of the mer promoter leading t

Degradation and half-life of DNA present in biomass from a genetically-modified organism during land application.

White biotechnology has made a positive impact on the chemical industry by providing safer, more efficient chemical manufacturing processes that have reduced the use of toxic chemicals, harsh reaction conditions, and expensive metal catalysts, which has improved alignment with the principles of Green Chemistry. The genetically-modified (GM) biocatalysts that are utilized in these processes are typically separated from high-value products and then recycled, or eliminated. Elimination routes include disposal in sanitary landfills, incineration, use as a fuel, animal feed, or reuse as an agricult

Streamlining Genetically Modified Organism Regulatory Classification in UK Gene Therapy Clinical Trials: A UK Pharmacy Perspective.

Accurate classification of Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) gene therapies remains a significant challenge to initiating clinical trials in the United Kingdom, often delaying patient access to innovative treatments. Current regulatory processes require separate GMO risk assessments at each National Health Service (NHS) trial location, leading to inconsistent approaches and duplication of effort. This article presents the development of a decision tree designed to streamline GMO classification for Gene Therapy Investigational Medicinal Products (GTIMPs). The proposed tool aims to address key

Harnessing microbial gene pools to remediate persistent organic pollutants using genetically modified plants--a viable technology?

It has been 14 years since the international community came together to legislate the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), restricting the production and use of specific chemicals that were found to be environmentally stable, often bioaccumulating, with long-term toxic effects. Efforts are continuing to remove these pollutants from the environment. While incineration and chemical treatment can be successful, these methods require the removal of tonnes of soil, at high cost, and are damaging to soil structure and microbial communities. The engineering of plants for in s

Degradation of low molecular weight volatile organic compounds by plants genetically modified with mammalian cytochrome P450 2E1.

Cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) is a key enzyme in the mammalian metabolism of several low molecular weight volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as trichloroethylene (TCE), vinyl chloride (VC), carbon tetrachloride (CT), benzene, chloroform, and bromodichloromethane (BDCM), which are all common environmental pollutants that pose risks to human health. We have developed a transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum cv. Xanthii) that expresses CYP2E1 with increased activity toward TCE and ethylene dibromide. In experiments with tobacco plant cuttings exposed to VOCs in small hydroponic vessels, the tr

Greatly Enhanced Removal of Volatile Organic Carcinogens by a Genetically Modified Houseplant, Pothos Ivy ( Epipremnum aureum) Expressing the Mammalian Cytochrome P450 2e1 Gene.

The indoor air in urban homes of developed countries is usually contaminated with significant levels of volatile organic carcinogens (VOCs), such as formaldehyde, benzene, and chloroform. There is a need for a practical, sustainable technology for the removal of VOCs in homes. Here we show that a detoxifying transgene, mammalian cytochrome P450 2e1 can be expressed in a houseplant, Epipremnum aureum, pothos ivy, and that the resulting genetically modified plant has sufficient detoxifying activity against benzene and chloroform to suggest that biofilters using transgenic plants could remove VOC

#JunkScience: Investigating pseudoscience disinformation in the Russian Internet Research Agency tweets.

Recent research has identified anti-vaccination propaganda in the so-called Russian Troll Tweets strongly associated with the 2016 US Presidential election. This study builds on this: hypothesising that if vaccination content was found in the sample, the Russia Tweets would be likely to contain other science content, and perhaps, similar pseudo or anti-science messages. As well as vaccination, climate change, genetically modified organisms, Ebola, flat Earth beliefs (flat Earthism) and Zika were found in the Russia tweets. Genetically modified organisms and flat Earthism appear to have been ca
