Perception of spatial orientation in microgravity.

Experiments during space and parabolic flights have shown that human spatial orientation in microgravity differs to a significant extent from its performance on earth. Due to the missing reference of gravitational force, unusual perceptual phenomena are observed, from inversion illusions to errors of perceived motion and position with respect to the spacecraft. This article gives an overview of results collected from space missions and parabolic flight campaigns, and proposes new lines of research about the perceptual phenomena of spatial orientation in microgravity. It is shown that most of t

[Spatial orientation capability in the elderly].

A labyrinth-learning experiment was conducted with 83 elderly subjects (median 53 years), which was validated against the architectural "reality" of the clinic in which the test was conducted. The orientation capability of psychologically normal subjects was compared with the performance of patients with a depressive syndrome and/or with an organic mental syndrome. Factor Analysis revealed the independent influence of component functions, the most important being spatial imaging, memory, goal-seeking orientation, labyrinth learning and right-left coordination. Orientation in reality is not acc

Spatial frequency and orientation tuning of spatial visual mechanisms in human albinos.

A masking paradigm was used to measure the spatial frequency and orientation tuning of spatial mechanisms in the albino visual system. Threshold elevation curves obtained in this manner at test spatial frequencies of 0.25 cycles/deg (cpd), 0.50 cpd, and 1 cpd have the same shape as curves obtained from normal subjects at test frequencies two octaves higher. Additional masking studies showed that contrast processing in albinos obeys the same compressive power law as in normals. Thus, spatial mechanisms in albino central vision have normal spatial frequency and orientation bandwidths. As central

Development of spatial orientation skills: an fMRI study.

The ability to orient and navigate in spatial surroundings is a cognitive process that undergoes a prolonged maturation with progression of skills, strategies and proficiency over much of childhood. In the present study, we used functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) to investigate the neurological mechanisms underlying the ability to orient in a virtual interior environment in children aged 10 to 12 years of age, a developmental stage in which children start using effective spatial orientation strategies in large-scale surroundings. We found that, in comparison to young adults, children

Vestibular, proprioceptive, and haptic contributions to spatial orientation.

The control and perception of body orientation and motion are subserved by multiple sensory and motor mechanisms ranging from relatively simple, peripheral mechanisms to complex ones involving the highest levels of cognitive function and sensory-motor integration. Vestibular contributions to body orientation and to spatial localization of auditory and visual stimuli have long been recognized. These contributions are reviewed here along with new insights relating to sensory-motor calibration of the body gained from space flight, parabolic flight, and artificial gravity environments. [Control of gaze and locomotion by spatial orientation].

We reported a new theory for daily vestibular functions which advocates top-down regulation of posture and gaze by supposing the coordinates in the brain. The hypothesis consists of three principles; first, the vestibular system is primarily a sensory system to detect spatial orientation; second, multisensory integrations reconstruct three-dimensional coordinates in the brain, which ascertain spatial orientation; third, daily behaviours like gazing or walking are controlled in a feed-forward manner by programming on the coordinates in the brain. The hypothesis was useful to understand strategi

Spatial orientation in echolocating harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena).

Studies concerning the echolocation behaviour of odontocetes focus mainly on target detection and discrimination, either in stationary animals or in animals approaching a specific target. We present the first data on the use of echolocation for spatial orientation or navigation. Synchronised video and high-frequency recordings were made of two harbour porpoises trained to swim from one position to another across an outdoor pool in order to correlate swimming and echolocation behaviour. Both porpoises showed a clear range-locking behaviour on specific positions near the end of the pool, as indi

Neck proprioception and spatial orientation in cervical dystonia.

Neck muscle vibration is known to influence body orientation and posture during locomotion and stance in normal subjects. To verify the hypothesis that neck proprioceptive input can be misinterpreted in patients with cervical dystonia (CD), lateral continuous vibration was applied to the sternocleidomastoid muscle during both stepping-in-place and quiet stance, with eyes closed. The orienting responses of CD patients were compared with those of normal subjects. Vibration effects on body orientation during stepping and stance were apparently different from normal, since no effects were seen whe

Spatial orientation of the angular vestibulo-ocular reflex.

During vestibular nystagmus, optokinetic nystagmus (OKN), and optokinetic afternystagmus (OKAN), the axis of eye rotation tends to align with the vector sum of linear accelerations acting on the head. This includes gravitational acceleration and the linear accelerations generated by translation and centrifugation. We define the summed vector of gravitational and linear accelerations as gravito-inertial acceleration (GIA) and designate the phenomenon of alignment as spatial orientation of the angular vestibuloocular reflex (aVOR). On the basis of studies in the monkey, we postulated that the sp

Orienting of spatial attention in Huntington's Disease.

To explore the functioning of spatial attention in Huntington's Disease (HD), 14 HD patients and 14 age-matched controls performed a cued response time (RT) task with peripheral cues. In Experiment 1, cues were not informative about the future target location, thus eliciting a purely exogenous orienting of attention. At short stimulus-onset asynchrony (SOA), controls showed an initial facilitation for cued locations, later replaced by a cost (inhibition of return, IOR). Patients had a larger and more persistent validity effect, with delayed IOR, resulting from a larger cost for uncued targets.

Neurocognitive Adaptations for Spatial Orientation and Navigation in Astronauts.

Astronauts often face orientation challenges while on orbit, which can lead to operator errors in demanding spatial tasks. In this study, we investigated the impact of long-duration spaceflight on the neural processes supporting astronauts' spatial orientation skills. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we collected data from 16 astronauts six months before and two weeks after their International Space Station (ISS) missions while performing a spatial orientation task that requires generating a mental representation of one's surroundings. During this task, astronauts exhibited

Visual vertigo: symptom assessment, spatial orientation and postural control.

Certain patients with balance disorders report a 'visual vertigo' in which their symptoms are provoked or aggravated by specific visual contexts (e.g. supermarkets, driving or movement of objects). In order to determine the causes of visual vertigo (VV), we assessed symptoms, anxiety and the influence of disorienting visual stimuli in 21 such patients. In 17 out of 21 patients, a peripheral vestibular disorder was diagnosed. Sixteen bilateral labyrinthine-defective subjects (LDS) and 25 normal subjects served as controls. Questionnaire assessment showed that the levels of trait anxiety and chi

Spatial orientation in weightlessness and readaptation to earth's gravity.

Unusual vestibular responses to head movements in weightlessness may produce spatial orientation illusions and symptoms of space motion sickness. An integrated set of experiments was performed during Spacelab 1, as well as before and after the flight, to evaluate responses mediated by the otolith organs and semicircular canals. A variety of measurements were used, including eye movements, postural control, perception of orientation, and susceptibility to space sickness.

Orientation ensemble perception is highly dependent on spatial attention.

The visual world is complex; however, we still access its richness despite computational limits in our visual system. Ensemble perception overcomes this bottleneck by extracting statistics, such as the mean, standard deviation, or other distributional characteristics, of feature sets like orientations or facial expressions, without processing each object individually. The role of attention in ensemble processing is debated: can we extract statistical information about a set when we do not attend to it? To address this question, we used the Posner cueing paradigm in which participants (N = 30,

Bayesian estimation of sensory priors in human spatial orientation.

Perception of spatial orientation relies on integration of sensory information encoding body position with external cues, such as visual inputs from the environment. Inherent variability in sensory inputs plays a critical role in how sensory information is processed. Unlike physical stimuli, neural encoding and transformation of these signals are subject to noise introduced at multiple levels within the sensory pathway. The Bayesian observer model provides a robust computational framework for understanding how the brain accommodates uncertainty to generate earth-vertical perception. Within the

Spatial orientation - a stable marker for vascular cognitive impairment?

Vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) is the second most prevalent form of dementia, but little is known about the early cognitive and neuroimaging markers. Spatial navigation deficits are an emerging marker for Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet less is known about spatial orientation deficits sensitive to VCI. This case report follows up on the first VCI patient identified to have an egocentric orientation deficit. The study aimed to examine the patient's spatial deficits three years on and gain insights from the addition of the patient's MRI brain scan. A battery of spatial navigation tasks were a

Orientation dependence of spatial memory acquired from auditory experience.

The present study investigated whether memory for a room-sized spatial layout learned through auditory localization of sounds exhibits orientation dependence similar to that observed for spatial memory acquired from stationary viewing of the environment. Participants learned spatial layouts by viewing objects or localizing sounds and then performed judgments of relative direction among remembered locations. The results showed that direction judgments following auditory learning were performed most accurately at a particular orientation in the same way as were those following visual learning, i
