Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale: A review.

Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale is a relatively recently discovered bacterium of the rRNA superfamily V. It is of worldwide distribution in commercial poultry, in which it is associated with respiratory diseases, and it is also found in wild birds. Airsacculitis and pneumonia are the most common features of infection with O. rhinotracheale. These signs can be induced by aerosol in intra-tracheal or intra-thoracic administration of the organism, and can be aggravated by other factors, such as respiratory viruses, bacteria or climatic conditions. Osteitis, meningitis and joint-infections, which

Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale infection in turkey breeders.

A sequence of outbreaks of respiratory disease separated by intervals of about 2 wk occurred on three turkey breeder ranches. The last two ranches affected belonged to different companies and were separated by a distance of 11 km. Mortality on the last ranch was particularly severe among certain segregated groups of turkeys that included toms, heavier birds, and birds undergoing a stressful event such as artificial insemination. On this ranch, percentages of mortality within an 18-day period were 5.2% in toms, 2.4% in hens, 7.4% in heavy toms and 5.4% in heavy hens. Turkeys from 27 to 42 wk of

Characterization of Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale field isolates from Hungary.

Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale is a widely distributed rod-shaped Gram-negative bacterium that infects several avian species including chickens and turkeys. It is associated with respiratory signs, growth retardation, mortality, and reduced egg production, thus causing severe economic losses to the poultry industries. In this study, 37 field isolates of O. rhinotracheale, collected from various locations in Hungary between 1997 and 2015, were identified and characterized by the analysis of partial 16S rRNA gene sequences, enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC)-PCR, and random

Identification and characterization of Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale isolates from Mexico.

Ten gram-negative, pleomorphic, rod-shaped isolates from coryza-like, respiratory diseased laying and broiler chickens were identified as Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale. All O. rhinotracheale isolates showed typical biochemical and enzymatic characteristics. Also, all isolates showed hemagglutinating activity with glutaraldehyde-fixed erythrocytes. On the basis of this property, a rabbit-raised antiserum was produced for an isolate. All isolates were identified by antiserum by hemagglutination-inhibition tests. No cross-reactions were observed when O. rhinotracheale isolates were tested with

Demonstration of Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale in pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) with pneumonia and airsacculitis.

Outbreaks of respiratory disease were investigated in reared pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) aged approximately 18 to 32 weeks, released into the semi-wild on four shooting estates in southern England. The clinical signs in the affected birds included swelling of the face and eyes, loss of condition, gasping respirations and coughing. The gross pathology findings included sinusitis, airsacculitis, pleural oedema and lung lesions. The histopathological findings in the affected lungs were characterized by a granulomatous pneumonia. Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ORT) was isolated from respirat

Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of gamithromycin in turkey poults with respect to Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale.

The macrolide gamithromycin (GAM) has the ability to accumulate in tissues of the respiratory tract. Consequently, GAM might be a suitable antibiotic to treat bacterial respiratory infections in poultry, such as Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale. As O. rhinotracheale infections are common in turkey flocks, the aim of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters of GAM in plasma, lung tissue, and pulmonary epithelial lining fluid (PELF) of turkeys and to correlate them with pharmacodynamic (PD) characteristics (PK/PD). The animal experiment was performed with 64 turkeys, which

'Candidatus Ornithobacterium hominis': insights gained from draft genomes obtained from nasopharyngeal swabs.

'Candidatus Ornithobacterium hominis' represents a new member of the Flavobacteriaceae detected in 16S rRNA gene surveys of people from South-East Asia, Africa and Australia. It frequently colonizes the infant nasopharynx at high proportional abundance, and we demonstrate its presence in 42 % of nasopharyngeal swabs from 12-month-old children in the Maela refugee camp in Thailand. The species, a Gram-negative bacillus, has not yet been cultured, but the cells can be identified in mixed samples by fluorescent hybridization. Here, we report seven genomes assembled from metagenomic data, two to i

Isolation and identification of Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale from commercial turkey flocks in the upper midwest.

Increased death loss was seen in a flock of 22-wk-old tom turkeys. The predominant postmortem lesion was fibrinopurulent pneumonia and pleuritis. Within 5 wk, turkey flocks on 17 other farms developed similar problems. All affected flocks during the 5-wk period were between 14 and 22 wk of age, and the severity of clinical signs and the degree of mortality increased with age. Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale was isolated in pure culture from affected lungs. Further investigation by tracheal swab culture of 261 flocks between 5 and 7 wk of age resulted in detection of O. rhinotracheale in 43% of

Effect of experimental Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale infection along with live infectious bronchitis vaccination in broiler chickens.

Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ORT), a bacterium causing respiratory tract infection, has led to a significant problem in the intensive poultry production in Egypt. Polymerase chain reaction-amplified 784-bp specific ORT DNA fragments were found in 7 ORT isolates from lungs, air sacs, and tracheas of commercial broilers or layers in Egypt in 2015. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of the live variant IBV 4/91 with ORT infection. A total of 120 14-d-old broiler chickens (Cobb 500) were equally divided into 4 groups for experimental infection in a complete randomized desi

Characterisation of Ornithobacterium hominis colonisation dynamics and interaction with the nasopharyngeal microbiome in a South African birth cohort.

Ornithobacterium hominis is a recently described Gram-negative bacterium that colonises the human nasopharynx and may be associated with poor upper respiratory tract health. Here, we describe the isolation of O. hominis from samples collected from a South African birth cohort, creating the first archive of cultured strains of the species from Africa. Genomic analysis reveals two dominant strains of Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale in Austria and Hungary with distinct multidrug resistance profiles.

Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ORT) is an emerging pathogen that poses significant challenges to commercial poultry production due to respiratory and systemic infections, leading to economic losses. Increasing multidrug resistance further complicates effective treatment strategies. Here, we present the first large-scale genomic analysis of ORT isolates from Europe, focusing on 94 newly sequenced isolates from Austria and Hungary. Phylogenetic analysis revealed two dominant clades, O1 and O2, which included isolates from both regions, indicating a lack of geographic segregation. Both clades d
