Oral fistula (OAF) is a pathological communication between the oral cavity and maxillary sinus which has its origin either from iatrogenic complications or from dental infections, osteomyelitis, radiation therapy or trauma. OAF closures can be achieved using different flaps which show both advantages and limitations. Therefore they all need careful consideration in order to select the best approach depending on the situation. The most widely employed flaps are of three types: vestibular flap, palatal flap and buccal fat pad Flap(BFP). The authors present three cases of OAF with the different t

IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is an immune-mediated disorder that involves multiple organs and is characterized by the infiltration of lymphoplasmacytic cells, including IgG4-positive plasma cells, along with storiform fibrosis and obliterative phlebitis in the inflamed organs. The primary sites affected by this condition include the pancreas, bile ducts, salivary glands, aorta, lungs, kidneys, meninges, lacrimal glands, mediastinal lymph nodes, and retroperitoneum. The pathogenesis is linked to a type 2 T-helper-cell cytokine profile and the involvement of regulatory T cells. However, the ex

BACKGROUND: Oroantral fistulas are pathologic connections between the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus. Arteriovenous fistulas are abnormal connections between an artery and a vein with no intervening capillary network.
METHODS: We present an extremely rare case of barotrauma-related oroantral fistula with an associated arteriovenous fistula between the internal maxillary artery and the ophthalmic venous system.
RESULTS: The patient developed an oroantral fistula from barometric pressure changes in the setting of sinusitis. After closure and revision of the oroantral fistula, he developed

Zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures account for a substantial proportion of trauma cases. The most frequent complications of maxillofacial fracture treatment are infections and soft tissue flap dehiscence. Postoperative infections nearly always resolve in response to oral antibiotics and local wound care. However, a significant infection can cause a permanent fistula. A 52-year-old man visited our clinic to treat an oroantral fistula (OAF), which was a late complication of a ZMC fracture. Postoperatively, the oral suture site dehisced, exposing the absorbable plate. However, he did not

After removal of a dental implant or extraction of a tooth in the upper jaw, the closure of an oroantral fistula (OAF) or oroantral communication (OAC) can be a difficult problem confronting the dentist and surgeon working in the oral and maxillofacial region. Oroantral communication (OAC) acts as a pathological pathway for bacteria and can cause infection of the antrum, which further obstructs the healing process as it is an unnatural communication between the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus. There are different ways to perform the surgical closure of the OAC. The decision-making in closu

This paper reports a case of herniation of an antral polyp through an oroantral fistula, appearing as a polypoid lesion of the alveolar ridge. The patient was a 24-year-old female, and her upper molar had been extracted two months previously. The lesion was asymptomatic, and was a soft tissue mass, red in color and nontender to palpation, involving the alveolar ridge in the maxillary molar area. Review of the literature yielded only a few other such cases.

Oroantral fistula (OAF) is a pathological communication between the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus, most commonly resulting from maxillary molar extractions. While traditional surgical techniques such as buccal advancement or palatal flaps have demonstrated efficacy in achieving closure, they may lead to complications including vestibular shortening, mucosal tension, and interference with prosthetic rehabilitation. This case report presents a novel technique for OAF closure involving the mobilization of palatal submucosal tissue anchored to the buccal bone, thereby eliminating the need fo

OBJECTIVE: Oroantral fistula, an abnormal communication between the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus, is infrequently diagnosed radiologically. The purpose of this study was to describe the CT findings and clinical features of oroantral fistula and to show that dental CT multiplanar reformatting programs can be instrumental in diagnosing this condition.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study included eight patients with clinically confirmed oroantral fistula or with radiologic evidence of oroantral fistula. Fistula size, degree of alveolar atrophy, nature of maxillary sinus disease, and related d

An oroantral fistula (OAF) is a pathological abnormal communication between the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus which may arise as a result of failure of primary healing of an OAF, dental infections, osteomyelitis, radiation therapy, trauma, or iatrogenic complications. With the presence of a fistula, the maxillary sinus is permanently open. Microbial flora passes from the oral cavity into the maxillary sinus, and the inflammation of the sinus occurs with all potential consequences. In literature, various techniques have been proposed for closure of OAFs. Due to the heterogeneity of the da

Actinomycosis is a bacterial infection due to Actinomyces israelii, a gram-positive, anaerobic organism that normally affects the cervicofacial region. However, facial injury or trauma (i.e., dental procedures) can allow this bacteria to inhabit other regions. There have been rare reports of actinomycosis of the paranasal sinuses. We present a case of a 50-year-old female who originally presented with a suspected oroantral fistula who subsequently was found to have actinomycosis involving her right maxillary sinus. Additionally, the dental extraction site revealed no connection with the maxill

The aim of this work is to describe a relatively new technique for closure of large oroantral fistulas. Fistulas were treated surgically using autograft septal cartilage and a buccal pyramidal flap. There were 11 patients, 8 of whom had chronic oroantral fistulas. Four cases had extensive sinusitis and were managed by endoscopic sinus surgery. Complete closure of the fistula was obtained in 10 cases (90.9%), whereas 1 case (9.1%) failed. No other complications occurred. The septal cartilage and pyramidal buccal flap technique is a viable alternative for the closure of large oroantral fistulas.

The oroantral fistula (OAF) is an epithelialized communication between the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus. In most of the cases, this communication occurs after molars and premolars extractions, but other factors may be cause of the communication, such as trauma. This article demonstrates an alternative surgical technique illustrated with a case report in which we perform the surgical treatment of OAF with palatal flap rotation combined with the use of titanium mesh in a victim of gunshot projectile wound in oral cavity.

Oroantral fistula (OAF) is a pathologic, epithelialized communication between the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus. OAF most commonly results from posterior maxillary tooth or molar extraction owing to proximity of the dental roots to the maxillary antrum and the thinness of the adjacent antral floor. It also can arise secondary to implant and orthognathic surgeries, cyst and tumor removal, dental infection, trauma, or as a sequela of radiation therapy. Communications larger than 5 mm are less likely to heal spontaneously and can epithelialize, forming an OAF. When locoregional flaps and gr

Oroantral fistula (OAF), also termed oroantral communication, is an abnormal condition in which there is a communicating tract between the maxillary sinus and the oral cavity. The most common causes of this pathological communication are known to be dental implant surgery and extraction of posterior maxillary teeth. The purpose of this article is to describe OAF; introduce the approach algorithm for the treatment of OAF; and review the fundamental surgical techniques for fistula closure with their advantages and disadvantages. The author included a thorough review of the previous studies acqui

A patient with an oroantral fistula of seventeen years' duration presented clinically complaining of symptoms suggesting recurring episodes of acute maxillary sinusitis. After control of the acute sinusitis, the defect was repaired using a buccal flap procedure and the sinus was enucleated via a Caldwell-Luc approach. The sinus contents included what appeared to be a chicken bone. The patient healed uneventfully. A discussion of the management of chronic oroantral fistulas and a case report are presented.

INTRODUCTION: Ectopic tooth eruption may result owing to one of 3 processes: developmentalDisturbance, iatrogenic activity, or pathologic process, such as a tumor or a cyst. In rare cases, occlusion of the sinus ostia may predispose a patient to develop a maxillary sinus mucocele. When the maxillary sinus is invaded, symptoms usually occur late in the process.
CASE REPORT: A 17 years old boy referred to department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery of university of medical sciences, Tabriz_Iran in 2010 with chronic recurrent mucoprulent discharge from retromollar trigone , posterior to
