Lymphoepithelioma is common in the nasopharynx, but its presence elsewhere in Waldeyer's ring is rare. Thirteen patients with lymphoepithelioma in the tonsil and base of the tongue have been treated at our institution. At initial examination, all 13 patients had advanced clinical disease. Five years after their initial treatment, seven patients were alive and free of disease. We report the case of a 74-year-old man who developed sudden nausea and a foreign body sensation. Fibrovascular polyps are benign but rare tumours of the upper digestive tract. In most of the cases reported to date, fibrovascular polyps have originated from the oesophagus or hypopharynx. Malignant melanomas of the upper respiratory tract are rare tumors but even rarer are their metastases in this region. Between 2% and 3.6% of malignant melanomas of the head and neck occur in the upper respiratory tract. We report a case history of a 48-year-old patient who underwent excision of a superficial spreading melanoma (tumor-thickness, 2 mm) from his trunk and later radical dissections of metastases in his axilla and groin. One hundred and ten patients with an oropharyngeal carcinoma seen in the period 1961--1971 at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital in Amsterdam are analysed. Approximately 75% of the patients were older than 60 years. About 60% of the patients had a cervical lymph node metastasis at the time of admission. OBJECTIVE: The purposes of this article are to illustrate the sonographic appearance of the oropharynx and to discuss the potential role of ultrasound in evaluation of the oropharynx.
CONCLUSION: Ultrasound is not currently used in the standard clinical evaluation of the oropharynx, but it is a promising imaging modality for evaluating the base of the tongue and the palatine tonsils. Ultrasound is comparable and complementary to CT and MRI, which have recognized limitations.

We describe a case of a giant fibrovascular polyp arising from the oropharynx and causing vague clinical symptoms. To our knowledge, this is the first description of an oropharyngeal fibrovascular polyp reported in the medical literature. The diagnosis was based on MR imaging findings, which showed the size and configuration of the polyp as well as the site of attachment. The patient underwent surgery, and the diagnosis was confirmed histologically.

Penetrating trauma of the oropharynx is not an uncommon problem in the pediatric population. Innocuous injuries with minor soft-tissue trauma have been associated with severe neurologic sequelae. A review of 77 oral trauma cases that occurred from 1981 to 1990 at Boston Children's Hospital was undertaken to see if constant factors could be identified so that a treatment protocol might be outlined for these patients.
