Design and manufacturing of patient-specific orthodontic appliances by computer-aided engineering techniques.

Orthodontic treatments are usually performed using fixed brackets or removable oral appliances, which are traditionally made from alginate impressions and wax registrations. Among removable devices, eruption guidance appliances are used for early orthodontic treatments in order to intercept and prevent malocclusion problems. Commercially available eruption guidance appliances, however, are symmetric devices produced using a few standard sizes. For this reason, they are not able to meet all the specific patient's needs since the actual dental anatomies present various geometries and asymmetric

[Early orthodontic treatment of the patients with Class III malocclusion combined with the arches discrepancies using the own design appliance. Clinical case].

A 6-year-old boy with a skeletal Class III malocclusion was treated with the use of the fixed own design orthodontic appliance. The device includes acrylic-splint with a three-sided (Bertoni) screw mounted in them, an arc element in the region of the front teeth for protractive action on them, metal hooks for the face mask. Orthodontic treatment using that appliance allowed to normalize the upper dental arche in the sagittal and transversal directions. Thus, conditions for normal growth and development of the dentofacial complex were created, which is the main goal of early orthodontic interve

Mussel-Inspired Polydopamine-Induced Minocycline Release and Fluorapatite Coating for the Design of Novel Orthodontic Appliances with Both Antibacterial and Remineralization Abilities.

Many types of antibacterial coating have been applied to fixed orthodontic devices to prevent bacterial attachment and subsequent dental caries. However, challenges such as weak adhesion, lack of remineralization ability, cytotoxicity, and a short duration of effectiveness remain unresolved. Therefore, there is a critical need for coatings that offer strong surface adherence, long-lasting antibacterial properties, and remineralization potential. In this study, we achieved controlled release of the antimicrobial agent minocycline through a polydopamine coating chemically grafted onto the surfac

Orthodontic Treatment of a Transmigrating Impacted Lower Canine Using a Digitally Designed and 3D-Printed Lingual Appliance Combined with Corticotomy and Laser Therapy-A Case Report.

Background: Canines play a vital functional and aesthetic role in human dentition, yet impacted canines, particularly in the mandible, are rare and can lead to functional disorders, such as the absence of canine guidance, while negatively affecting a patient's self-esteem. Transmigration of mandibular canines adds complexity to treatment. One method to reduce the treatment time, especially for impacted teeth, is corticotomy-assisted orthodontic therapy (CAOT). Methods: A 13-year-old patient presented with a horizontally impacted lower right canine, positioned below the roots of the lower incis

Clear aligners in orthodontic treatment.

Since the introduction of the Tooth Positioner (TP Orthodontics) in 1944, removable appliances analogous to clear aligners have been employed for mild to moderate orthodontic tooth movements. Clear aligner therapy has been a part of orthodontic practice for decades, but has, particularly since the introduction of Invisalign appliances (Align Technology) in 1998, become an increasingly common addition to the orthodontic armamentarium. An internet search reveals at least 27 different clear aligner products currently on offer for orthodontic treatment. The present paper will highlight the increas

Direct printed removable appliances: A new approach for the Twin-block appliance.

Removable appliances are an important part of orthodontic treatment. The Twin-block is widely used for Class II correction. Traditionally, an impression, bite registration, and mounted plaster casts are required to fabricate the acrylic appliance, which usually requires a specialized laboratory. This makes the process expensive and also time-consuming. This paper aims to present an innovative approach for the virtual design and direct printing of removable orthodontic appliances, particularly the Twin-block, that can be done in-office without the need for casts or a specialized laboratory.
