The influence of fixed orthodontic appliances on halitosis.

Halitosis is a widely spread condition. There are numerous causes. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of fixed orthodontic appliances on the occurrence of halitosis. 55 patients in an orthodontic practice were monitored at three points in time after application of orthodontic appliance (T1: immediately after application, T2: 4 weeks after application, T3: 3 months after application). Monitoring included patient self-evaluation, plaque index, tongue coating index and organoleptic measurement. The subjective parameters taste, dry mouth and breath odor did not show statistical

[History. The development of fixed appliances in orthodontics].

The development of fixed orthodontic appliances has a long history. Archaeological finds suggest Egyptian and Etruscan civilizations made use of techniques for stabilizing and moving teeth. In the 18th century, Pierre Fauchard laid the foundation for modern orthodontics; he was followed by Edward Angle, who introduced a systematic approach in the 19th century. Innovations such as the edgewise bracket, the Begg technique and the acid-etch technique have increased the efficiency and predictability of treatments. Modern developments include self-ligating brackets, improved wires and skeletal anch

Initial arch wires used in orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances.

BACKGROUND: Initial arch wires are the first arch wires inserted into fixed appliance at the beginning of orthodontic treatment. With a number of different types of orthodontic arch wires available for initial tooth alignment, it is important to understand which are most efficient and which cause the least amount of root resorption and pain during the initial aligning stage of treatment. This is the third update of a Cochrane review first published in 2010. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of initial arch wires for the alignment of teeth with fixed orthodontic braces, in terms of the rate of

[Enlargement of the gingiva during treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances].

Gingival enlargement commonly occurs in patients treated with fixed orthodontic appliances. In a study, 25 patients were monitored during and after treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances. The extent of the enlargement of the gingiva was determined by means of intra-oral photographs made shortly before the placement of the appliances, immediately after their removal and at 3 and 6 months after the appliances had been removed. The enlargement of the gingival was determined using a Visual Analogue Scale. During orthodontic treatment the average degree of gingival enlargement increased signif

The Condition of the Masseter Muscles After Orthodontic Treatment with Fixed Appliances.

BACKGROUND: One of the methods used in malocclusion treatment is the use of fixed appliances. Research conducted so far has revealed that changes in bite force occurring over the course of orthodontic treatment are directly related to the functional status of the masticatory muscles. It is therefore advisable to find out how the biomechanical parameters of the masseter muscles change after treatment with the application of fixed appliances. METHODS: The study material comprised 74 individuals, divided into the study group (n = 37) treated by means of fixed orthodontic appliances over the aver

The impact of fixed orthodontic appliances on oral microbiome dynamics in Japanese patients.

Fixed orthodontic appliances are common and effective tools to treat malocclusion. Adverse effects of these appliances, such as dental caries and periodontitis, may be associated with alteration of the microbiome. This study investigated the impact of these appliances on the dynamics of the oral microbiome. Seventy-one patients were selected. Supragingival plaque samples were collected before placement (T0) and six months after placement (T1). Saliva samples were collected at T0 and T1, and then when appliance removal (T2). Microbial DNA was analyzed by 16S rRNA meta-sequencing. The diversity

Fixed appliances orthodontic therapy as a risk factor for caries development: Systematic review.

Orthodontic treatment is often mandatory to improve the patient's health condition. However, the fixed appliance can create additional plaque retention areas, which can increase the risk of caries development. Clinically, one can observe various effects of fixed appliance treatment on caries prevalence. This study aims to analyze to what extent orthodontic therapy with fixed appliances is a risk factor for developing caries in pediatric and adult patients. The keywords used in the search strategy were as follows: ("caries" AND "caries risk" AND "caries experience" AND" "orthodontic treatment"

[The Ball Abutment: new orthodontic applications for fixed and removable appliances. Case series].

Widely used, especially for supra-implant solutions, the indication of attachments is now extended to orthodontics. The objective of this series of cases was to describe three clinical situations in which attachments on miniscrews have been adapted to orthodontics, leading to the development of a new connection: the ball attachment or Ball Abutment making it « semi removable » anchoring devices which until now had to be fixed. A series of three cases is presented. For each case, the miniscrew(s) already in place during the active orthodontic treatment phase is (or are) used with a palatal devi
