Removable orthodontic appliances: new perspectives on capabilities and efficiency.

AIM: Removable appliances are a dependable choice for many patients but like all orthodontic appliances, they have some limitations in use. Patient selection and appropriate appliance design are two key factors for success. Many patients, especially adults, prefer intra-oral appliances to extra-oral devices. Sometimes a removable intra-oral appliance can solve a dental problem in a shorter period of time compared to fixed treatment, and this has also been repeatedly seen in molar distalisation. From the interceptive perspective, the appliance can prevent or alleviate an impending crowding for

Palatal finger springs in removable orthodontic appliances--an in vitro study.

Palatal finger springs are often used in removable orthodontic appliances to tip teeth in a mesiodistal direction. There is general consensus that a force of 30-50 g is required to tip a single-rooted tooth, with an activation of about 3 mm for a spring with a load/deflection rate (LDR) of 15 g/mm. The purpose of this report is to establish the magnitude of forces for finger springs made from different types of wires (i.e. those from different manufacturers and of different diameters and lengths). The findings were that springs made from ordinary 18/8 stainless steel wire showed a lower LDR th

[The Ball Abutment: new orthodontic applications for fixed and removable appliances. Case series].

Widely used, especially for supra-implant solutions, the indication of attachments is now extended to orthodontics. The objective of this series of cases was to describe three clinical situations in which attachments on miniscrews have been adapted to orthodontics, leading to the development of a new connection: the ball attachment or Ball Abutment making it « semi removable » anchoring devices which until now had to be fixed. A series of three cases is presented. For each case, the miniscrew(s) already in place during the active orthodontic treatment phase is (or are) used with a palatal devi

Localized sequential use of resilient lining to generate orthodontic force in thermoformed active removable appliances.

A new modality of orthodontic treatment based on the thermoformed appliance was developed and trialled clinically. A light-cured resilient lining material commonly used for denture relining was placed locally and sequentially in thermoformed appliances to generate orthodontic forces. The new method appeared to be effective. All the presented cases showed substantial improvement in dental alignment. A number of orthodontic movements were demonstrated. Localized use of resilient lining in thermoformed orthodontic appliances appeared to be a promising alternative to other thermoformed active remo

Introducing a Removable Orthodontic Appliance and Its Effects on Dental Arch Dimensions.

INTRODUCTION: Guiding anterior crossbite to a normal position is one of the most important responsibilities of a pediatric dentist or orthodontist to gain both esthetic and function. Crossbite with dental etiology can be treated by a variety of appliances. We describe a removable appliance with a different spring design for proclination of more than one incisor in mixed dentition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is an observational study that was performed on sixteen children, 7-11 years of age, who needed incisor proclination in more than one tooth. In this study, patients were followed un

Findings of dentitions whose orthodontic treatment by removable appliances with and without extractions was ended about 23 years ago.

Out of a total of 300 patients the data of which and the dental casts including a control cast after an interval of 3 years were completely available, 56 patients could be investigated after an interval of about 20 years. When obtaining the last impressions they were aged 38 1/2 years. All casts were estimated and evaluated according to the method of Eismann (1969). It gives prerequisites to different dentofacial anomalies to compare them with each other under reproducible conditions. 15 factors are used in the assessment of the morphology of the dentition. Each of the criteria is measured and

Alveolar bone turnover and tooth movement in male rats after removal of orthodontic appliances.

The purpose of this study was to acquire tooth movement, histomorphometric and biochemical data on oral tissues that had previously been loaded with calibrated orthodontic forces. One hundred and forty-four male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into two groups: Group I, orthodontic appliances placed for 16 days to mesially move maxillary first molars with an initial force of 40 gm, and group II, sham orthodontic treatment. Seven to twelve rats were killed at each of six times after removal of appliance. Tooth movement was measured cephalometrically, alveolar bone turnover by histomorp

Toxicological Assessment of an Acrylic Removable Orthodontic Appliance Using 2D and 3D In Vitro Methods.

Malocclusion is a global health problem, mainly affecting children and adolescents. For this reason, orthodontic treatment must be, on the one hand, safe, non-toxic, and effective and, on the other hand, it must have the best possible esthetic profile. Thus, the use of orthodontic appliances is addressed to all age groups, including young children, for a long period of time, which is why their safety profile is a matter of real interest. For this reason, the purpose of the present study was to evaluate the safety and biocompatibility of an acrylic removable orthodontic appliance made of polyme

Candidal carriage and plaque distribution before, during and after removable orthodontic appliance therapy.

Candidal counts at 6 mucosal sites in 33 subjects were estimated by imprint culture before, during and after removable orthodontic appliance therapy. Additionally, dental plaque scores and salivary pH were measured at each stage. Whole mouth and site prevalence of candida rose significantly during therapy before falling to levels approximating initial values. A similar pattern was seen for candidal counts for the whole mouth and at individual mucosal sites, although post-treatment densities were usually lower than originally seen. The number of sites colonised by candida and salivary pH also i

The impact of general self-efficacy and the severity of malocclusion on acceptance of removable orthodontic appliances in 10- to 12-year-old patients.

BACKGROUND: The patients' acceptance of a treatment plan and their subsequent cooperation play a crucial role in achieving the best results in orthodontic treatments. Evidences show some personality traits such as general self-efficacy (GSE) and some dental traits such as severity of malocclusion are correlated with motivation of orthodontic treatment. These factors may predict the patients' compliance and acceptance in using removable orthodontic appliances. This cross sectional study was conducted to assess the correlation of GSE and the severity of malocclusion with patients' acceptance in
