Corrosion of orthodontic bracket bases.

Attention has recently been focused on the development of black and green stains in association with directly bonded stainless steel brackets. Twelve clinical cases of staining were studied in this investigation. After intraoral photography of the stains, the brackets were removed for examination with the scanning electron microscope. Multiple voids were observed at the resin-bracket interface, especially at the periphery. Considerable deterioration of the alloy base and mesh structure was observed in the void areas. Preliminary analysis of the stains showed that chromium compounds were presen

3D-printed orthodontic brackets - proof of concept.

UNLABELLED: Today, orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances is usually carried out using preprogrammed straight-wire brackets made of metal or ceramics. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to determine the possibility of clinically implementing a fully digital workflow with individually designed and three-dimensionally printed (3D-printed) brackets. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Edgewise brackets were designed using computer-aided design (CAD) software for demonstration purposes. After segmentation of the malocclusion model generated based on intraoral scan data, the brackets were digitally po

Shear bond strength of 3-dimensional-printed orthodontic brackets.

INTRODUCTION: This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) and adhesive remnant index (ARI) of 3-dimensional-printed orthodontic brackets with 3 different base designs and to examine the surface morphologic differences of remaining adhesives using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). METHODS: Sixty maxillary premolar teeth (n = 20 per group) were randomly allocated into 3 bracket base design groups: (1) custom, (2) macroretentive, and (3) standard. After digital scanning of the teeth, the brackets were printed using a MAX UV DLP 3D printer (Asiga, Sydney, Australia). Eac

Hypersensitivity to conventional and to nickel-free orthodontic brackets.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the allergenic potential of orthodontic brackets, comparing the cutaneous sensitivity provoked by metals present in conventional metallic brackets to that provoked by brackets with a low concentration of nickel, known as "nickel-free". A sample was selected from 400 patients undergoing treatment in the orthodontic clinic of the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais (Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil), in the period from the beginning of 2002 to the end of 2003. A cutaneous sensitivity patch test containing 5% nickel sulphate was used in 58 patients (30 m

Orthodontic bracket debonding: risk of enamel fracture.

OBJECTIVES: Until now, it is not clear if various procedures of bracket debonding differ with regard to their risk of enamel fracture. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to compare these procedures biomechanically for assessing the risk of complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An anisotropic finite element method (FEM) model of the mandibular bone including periodontal ligament, enamel, dentin, and an orthodontic bracket was created. The morphology based on the CT data of an anatomical specimen. Typical loading conditions were defined for each method of bracket debonding (compr

MRI compatibility of orthodontic brackets and wires: systematic review article.

BACKGROUND: Before the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination fixed orthodontic devices, such as brackets and wires, cause challenges not only for the orthodontist but also for the radiologist. Essentially, the MRI-safe scan of the fixed orthodontic tools requires a proper guideline in clinical practice. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to examine all aspects of MRI-safe scan, including artifact, thermal, and debonding effects, to identify any existing gaps in knowledge in this regard and develop an evidence-based protocol. METHODS: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Re

Orthodontic bracket lost in the airway during orthognathic surgery.

In orthodontic treatment before orthognathic surgery, all erupted molars should be banded or bonded to prevent the creation of an occlusal step. Bonded attachments are often used rather than bands because it is easier to bond to partially erupted teeth, there is no need for orthodontic separation or cementation, and they offer improved periodontal health and patient comfort. However, bonded brackets can fail during conventional orthodontic treatment, and the chance of failure might be greater during surgical procedures. Our purpose in this article was to report an intraoperative second-molar b

Oral health-related quality of life in orthodontic patients during initial therapy with conventional brackets or self-ligating brackets.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The self-ligating brackets (SLB) have been introduced in modern orthodontic treatment in recent years for malocclusion patients. This study was conducted to compare two treatments, conventional brackets (CB) and SLB, in malocclusion to determine which treatment will provide better oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The research involved a prospective randomized clinical trial, composed of two sets of questionnaires, Short Form-36 (SF-36T) and oral health impact profile-14 (OHIP-14T), concerning HRQoL and OHRQoL. In total, 88 maloc

Surface Evaluation of Orthodontic Brackets Using Texture and Fractal Dimension Analysis.

The surface topography of orthodontic brackets can have a significant impact on both the effectiveness of the therapy and the behavior of these elements in the oral cavity environment. In this situation, striving to obtain the most uniform, smooth surface in a repeatable manner for each manufactured element should be a sine qua non condition for each supplier of orthodontic brackets. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the surfaces of orthodontic brackets using different methods. One of them-that is relatively simple and repeatable-is the analysis of the fractal dimension and the analysis of

Effect of light-emitting diode on bond strength of orthodontic brackets.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of light-emitting diode (LED) light curing on shear bond strength (SBS) of orthodontic brackets bonded to teeth. Light exposure of 40 seconds from a conventional halogen-based light-curing unit was used as a control. Eighty human premolars were divided into four groups of 20 each. Brackets were bonded to acid-etched teeth with Transbond XT light-cured adhesive. In the first group, the adhesive was light cured for 40 seconds with a conventional halogen unit (XL3000, 3M). In the other three groups, adhesive was cured with a commercial LED unit (El

A method for producing controlled fluoride release from an orthodontic bracket.

The aim of this study was to manufacture and test, in vitro, a novel modification to provide fluoride-releasing orthodontic brackets. Thirty-two orthodontic brackets were drilled to produce a recess (approximately 1.3 mm in diameter and 0.7 mm in depth) at the centre of the bracket base. Four materials, with and without the addition of sodium fluoride, a glass ionomer cement (Ketac Cem micro), a resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC; GC Fuji Ortho LC), a zinc phosphate (Zinc Cement Improved), and a resin (Transbond XT) were used to fill the recess in the bracket base. Fluoride release was

Candida prevalence and oral hygiene due to orthodontic therapy with conventional brackets.

BACKGROUND: Conventional brackets are often used during orthodontic therapy of patients with malocclusion. The complex construction of such brackets greatly inhibits oral hygiene, which predisposes to increased carriage of microbiota. Orthodontic brackets could act as reservoir of yeast and predispose to oral candidosis. The aim of this study was to assess Candida prevalence and the role of oral hygiene during fixed appliance therapy. A further aim was to characterize the isolated yeasts according to their ability to form biofilms. METHODS: Seventeen participants (average age 17 ± 7 years) we

Maxillomandibular Fixation Using Orthodontic Brackets as a Treatment Option for Mandibular Fractures.

Maxillomandibular fixation (MMF) is a treatment option for mandibular fractures. Various techniques can be used for MMF which include arch bars, eyelets, and intermaxillary fixation (IMF) screws. When a patient undergoing orthodontic treatment experiences a mandible fracture, conventional MMF wiring techniques cannot be employed without removal of the existing orthodontic brackets. In such cases, the existing orthodontic brackets can be utilized for MMF. To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first documented case in the literature where a mandible fracture in a patient undergoing
