The practice of orthodontics encompasses all other aspects of dentistry, but at the same time it also is very different. Therefore, the pharmacologic agents that would be practical for orthodontic practice are much more limited than those used in other disciplines of dentistry. This, however, does not imply that a full understanding of pharmacologic drug action, side effects, and contraindications is unnecessary. Some common drugs, such as the antibiotics, anticholinergics, fluoride, antianxiety agents, and drugs for myofacial pain, are reviewed according to their application to orthodontic pr

This review article presents an overview of craniofacial malformations and the role of the orthodontist in their management. The first part of this article focuses on cleft lip and palate, followed by more complex deformities including craniosynostosis and craniofacial microsomia. The main features of these anomalies are discussed as well as the clinical problems seen in this group of patients. The emphasis is on the role of the orthodontist in the multi-disciplinary management of these cases.

INTRODUCTION: One factor that can affect treatment outcomes is the treatment provider, and this factor has not been extensively studied. This research aimed to evaluate orthodontic treatment quality, length, and efficiency when 2 orthodontists collaborated on treatment, compared with the treatment provided solely by either orthodontist.
METHODS: A total of 150 consecutively treated subjects were divided into 3 equal groups based on the treating clinician. Patients in group A were treated by orthodontist A, group B by orthodontist B, and group C by both orthodontists in collaboration. The Peer

Dentofacial morphology can be altered by nasorespiratory obstruction depending on the magnitude, duration, and time of occurrence. More recent findings suggest that nasal-oral breathing per se is not necessarily harmful to craniofacial growth. However, in instances where the nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal airspace is small, exaggerated postural responses in obligatory mouth breathers may be detrimental to craniofacial growth. Extended head posture which was observed in mouth breathers is found to influence the position of the mandible. Deviated nasal septum , allergies, chronic infection , hy

Dealing with this type of malformation, the orthodontist is confronted with a three-level problem: inter-personal, social, and technical. Because families consider the birth of a cleft palate child to be a disaster, orthodontists who undertake their treatment should understand the genesis of the turbulence that families will have to endure. Most parents learn to deal with these difficulties, but the affected children are going to have to submit to the stares of those they encounter. Adolescence is a critical period for them and it is also the time when they will visit their orthodontist most f

There has been much debate with respect to the ideal time to initiate orthodontic treatment. Recent clinical trials have tested the effects of early orthodontic treatment. The purpose of this study was to understand orthodontists' perspectives on the best time to initiate treatment, factors that preclude early treatment, and experiences with compliance or adherence problems among their younger patients. Questionnaires were distributed to 335 practicing orthodontists throughout the United States. Respondents were first asked to indicate the best stage to initiate orthodontic treatment for 41 di

INTRODUCTION: Interruption of treatment and poor compliance are problems in orthodontics, especially when the patient does not pay for treatment. The aim of this study was to develop a measure for orthodontists, regardless of type of practice, to assess their opinions about patient compliance.
METHODS: A questionnaire, based on an orthodontic patient cooperation scale, was modified in 2 pilot phases. The piloted version was tested among 249 respondents. A principal component analysis was performed that included factors with an eigenvalue greater than 1. Reliability was assessed by means of in

Natural rubber latex (NRL) allergy can have potentially serious consequences, and reports of orthodontic patients reacting to NRL have increased significantly over recent years. It is therefore important for the orthodontist to know how to manage patients with an NRL allergy and how to deal with possible reactions to NRL. Safe and effective practice depends on recognizing patients who are at risk of NRL allergy, and an awareness of materials and equipment that contain NRL and the availability of suitable NRL-free alternatives.

Close cooperation between speech pathologist and orthodontist in management of CLP cases is described. Preoperative treatment aims at maintenance of initially favorable maxillary relations and compensation for imbalance of the oral musculature. Knowledge of growth and speech development is decisive for timing of primary surgery (lip about 6 months, soft palate about 18 months, hard palate 5 to 7 years). Speech assessment starts at age 2-2 1/2, followed by team controls once or twice a year with proper coaching of parents. Actual speech therapy is not stared before age 5. The approach described

INTRODUCTION: This project was undertaken to accomplish 2 objectives: (1) to identify whether there is a discrepancy between orthodontists and experts in temporomandibular disorders (TMD) related to diagnosis and treatment of TMD patients, and (2) to influence the manner in which TMD curricula are taught in orthodontic residency programs, better preparing future orthodontic specialists to diagnose and treat (and refer) patients with TMD.
METHODS: A survey invitation was e-mailed to 8870 members of the American Association of Orthodontists. Items were answered on a 6-point scale (0 = I don't k

BACKGROUND: Contemporary society places a strong emphasis on the importance of facial esthetics. This perception of esthetics is inherently related to facial symmetry. Esthetics of soft tissues plays an important role in the selection of the therapeutic strategy; thus, the subjective evaluation of chin asymmetry is of great significance for clinical treatment.
AIM: The objective of the study is to evaluate: 1. The degree of chin asymmetry on esthetics perception in frontal view and 2. To analyze the critical evaluation of chin asymmetry by dental professionals and laypersons with frontal faci
