The History and Impact of Prescribing Orthokeratology for Slowing Myopia Progression.

This paper discusses the history and impact of orthokeratology on slowing the progression of myopia. It discusses the origins and evolution of orthokeratology from polymethymethaccrylate lenses worn during the day to its current prescribing of highly permeable, innovative reverse-geometry designs worn only while sleeping. Technological advances in corneal topography, lens design, lens materials, and manufacturing have facilitated growth of orthokeratology to a precise and predictable procedure. More recently, significant interest in orthokeratology has been stimulated by its efficacy in slowin

Good clinical practice in orthokeratology.

Overnight orthokeratology is becoming more and more popular especially in the Asia-Pacific region where the treatment is primarily used for myopic control in young children. Risk of complications in contact lens wear increases during overnight wear and may further increase when the treatment is used on children. The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive guideline for practitioners to improve their orthokeratology practice and minimize unnecessary or preventable complications. The fundamental requirement for starting an orthokeratology practice is to have proper education in the area

Recovery of corneal irregular astigmatism, ocular higher-order aberrations, and contrast sensitivity after discontinuation of overnight orthokeratology.

AIMS: To examine prospectively the recovery of various parameters after discontinuation of overnight orthokeratology. METHODS: Seventeen subjects undergoing orthokeratology for 12 months were examined. Refraction, corneal topography, wavefront aberrometry, a visual acuity test and a contrast sensitivity test were performed at baseline, 12 months after commencement of the procedure, and 1 week and 1 month after discontinuation of the treatment. Asymmetry and higher-order irregularity components were calculated using a Fourier analysis of the corneal topography data. Contrast sensitivity was as

Corneal pigmentation in overnight orthokeratology: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Iron deposition within the basal corneal epithelium, or a Hudson-Stahli line, is a common physiological finding. Variations of this deposition can be seen after surgical refractive procedures and as a result of comeal disease. This case series provides evidence of comeal deposition of a similar nature in patients who wear reverse geometry rigid gas-permeable contact lenses for overnight orthokeratology. To date, similar findings associated with orthokeratology have not been published. CASE REPORTS: Deposition-presumably of iron-was found in the corneal epithelium in a small sample

Development and evaluation of a deep neural network model for orthokeratology lens fitting.

PURPOSE: To optimise the precision and efficacy of orthokeratology, this investigation evaluated a deep neural network (DNN) model for lens fitting. The objective was to refine the standardisation of fitting procedures and curtail subjective evaluations, thereby augmenting patient safety in the context of increasing global myopia. METHODS: A retrospective study of successful orthokeratology treatment was conducted on 266 patients, with 449 eyes being analysed. A DNN model with an 80%-20% training-validation split predicted lens parameters (curvature, power and diameter) using corneal topograp

Corneal collagen cross-linking in the stabilization of PRK, LASIK, thermal keratoplasty, and orthokeratology.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To describe the use of corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) and its efficacy in the stabilization of keratorefractive procedures, including PRK, laser in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK), thermal keratoplasty, and orthokeratology. RECENT FINDINGS: Since its introduction, CXL has quickly gained interest in the treatment of ectactic disorders due to its ability to increase the biomechanical stability of the cornea. In its earliest use, it has shown to be effective in the treatment of both keratoconus and post-LASIK ectasia. More recent studies of CXL in combination with keratorefr

Prediction of Myopia Eye Axial Elongation With Orthokeratology Treatment via Dense I2I Based Corneal Topography Change Analysis.

While orthokeratology (OK) has shown effective to slow the progression of myopia, it remains unknown how spatially distributed structural stress/tension applying to different regions affects the change of corneal geometry, and consecutive the outcome of myopia control, at fine-grained detail. Acknowledging that the underlying working mechanism of OK lens is essentially mechanics induced refractive parameter reshaping, in this study, we develop a novel mechanics rule guided deep image-to-image learning framework, which densely predicts patient's corneal topography change according to treatment

Update and guidance on management of myopia. European Society of Ophthalmology in cooperation with International Myopia Institute.

The prevalence of myopia is increasing extensively worldwide. The number of people with myopia in 2020 is predicted to be 2.6 billion globally, which is expected to rise up to 4.9 billion by 2050, unless preventive actions and interventions are taken. The number of individuals with high myopia is also increasing substantially and pathological myopia is predicted to become the most common cause of irreversible vision impairment and blindness worldwide and also in Europe. These prevalence estimates indicate the importance of reducing the burden of myopia by means of myopia control interventions

[A case of corneal reshaping therapy for correction of myopia combined with presbyopia].

A 42-year-old female patient with bilateral myopia for over 30 years and progressive near vision blur for 6 months presented to Ningbo Eye Hospital. Based on the binocular refractive status and visual function examination results, she was diagnosed with bilateral myopia combined with presbyopia. To achieve simultaneous clear distance and near vision, a micro-monovision approach was adopted, and toric orthokeratology lenses with a four-zone design were fitted. Visual quality was improved by adjusting the back optic zone diameter of the lenses, resulting in satisfactory correction outcomes. This
