The Gut Bacteria of Gampsocleis gratiosa (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) by Culturomics.

Gampsocleis gratiosa Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1862, is a type of omnivorous chirping insect with a long history of artificial breeding. It has high economic value and is also an excellent orthopteran model organism. In this study, 12 types of culture media combined with 16S rRNA sequencing were employed to isolate 838 bacterial strains from the gut of G. gratiosa. After sequence comparison, a total of 98 species of bacteria were identified, belonging to 3 phyla, 5 classes, 11 orders, 20 families, and 45 genera. Firmicutes and Proteobacteria accounted for the majority (92.86%). At the order level

Wide dispersion of B chromosomes in Rhammatocerus brasiliensis (Orthoptera, Acrididae).

The grasshopper Rhammatocerus brasiliensis shows polymorphism of B chromosomes, but the magnitude of B-chromosome occurrence and the factors that may contribute to their dispersion in the species remain unknown thus far. The present study analyzed the occurrence and dispersion of B chromosomes in R. brasiliensis individuals from 21 populations widely distributed in the Brazilian Northeast. The genetic connectivity between 10 populations was verified through analysis of ISSR markers from 200 individuals. Of the 21 populations, 19 presented individuals with one B chromosome, three with two, and

A new genus of grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae: Spathosterninae) from Thailand.

A new genus of Spathosterninae, Tenasserimacris gen. nov. (type species: T. punctata sp. nov.), was discovered and described from a lower montane forest in Tenasserim Mountain Range of western Thailand, Khao Krajom in Ratchaburi Province. Clearly, this genus is similar to Beybienkoacris Storozhenko in the presence of parallel veinlets on the radial area of tegmina. However, this new genus differs from the latter in the temporal foveolae in both sexes, shape of ventral genicular lobe of hind femur in female, shape of furculae on 10th abdominal tergite in male, shape of valves of cingulum and ap

Chemical Ecology and Olfaction in Short-Horned Grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae).

Chemoreception plays a crucial role in the reproduction and survival of insects, which often rely on their sense of smell and taste to find partners, suitable habitats, and food sources, and to avoid predators and noxious substances. There is a substantial body of work investigating the chemoreception and chemical ecology of Diptera (flies) and Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies); but less is known about the Orthoptera (grasshoppers, locusts, crickets, and wēta). Within the Orthoptera, the family Acrididae contains about 6700 species of short-horned grasshoppers. Grasshoppers are fascinating o

Feeding patterns in grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae): Factors influencing diet specialization.

Diets of grasshopper species from two arid grassland communities in Trans-Pecos, Texas, were determined by gut analysis. Species-specific food plant choice and niche breadths are presented for each of these species. As a group, grasshoppers range from monophagous to polyphagous feeders although most species fall in the oligophagous to polyphagous group. Phylogenetic constraints are evident such that gomphocerinae are primarily grass feeders while melanoplinae feed predominantly on forbs; the oedipodinae show less clearcut tendencies.Feeding patterns are remarkably constant from site to site an

Effect of temperature on efficacy of insecticides to differential grasshopper (Orthoptera: Acrididae).

The effect of temperature on activity of insecticides for controlling grasshoppers in leafy green vegetables was evaluated. Insecticides evaluated had differing modes of action and included diflubenzuron, azadirachtin, Beauveria bassiana, spinosad, endosulfan, esfenvalerate, and naled. We evaluated these insecticides for efficacy to third instars of differential grasshopper, Melanoplus differentialis (Thomas), at temperatures ranging from 10 to 35 degrees C. In the laboratory, treatment with esfenvalerate resulted in 100% mortality at temperatures of 10 to 35 degrees C, and efficacy was not te

Differential Gene Expression Analysis of the Epacromius coerulipes (Orthoptera: Acrididae) Transcriptome.

Epacromius coerulipes (Ivanov) is one of the most widely distributed locusts. To date, the main methods to kill locusts still rely on chemical controls, which can result in the selection of locusts with resistance to chemical pesticides. Butene-fipronil is a new pesticide that was discovered by the structural modification of fipronil. This pesticide has been used to control various agricultural pests and has become an important pesticide product to control pests that exhibit resistance to other pesticides, including locusts. To extend its useful half-life, studies of the initiation and progres

A nomenclatural review of family-group names in the Tettigoniidae (Orthoptera: Ensifera).

The Tettigoniidae is the largest and most complex family within the Orthoptera, and perhaps expectedly, its systematic arrangement is largely unsatisfactory. Recent phylogenetic studies within the group have been almost wholly at odds with traditional morphological classification, and it is clear that a great number of changes will be made to the family in the near future. To remove the element of nomenclatural uncertainty that will inevitably arise with such dramatic changes, I here provide a complete annotated list of all family-group names proposed within the Tettigoniidae in explicit order

On the tympanic membrane impedance of the katydid Copiphora gorgonensis (Insecta: Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae).

Katydids (bush-crickets) are endowed with tympanal ears located in their forelegs' tibiae. The tympana are backed by an air-filled tube, the acoustic trachea, which transfers the sound stimulus from a spiracular opening on the thorax to the internal side of the tympanic membranes (TM). In katydids the sound stimulus reaches both the external and internal side of the membranes, and the tympanal vibrations are then transferred to the hearing organ crista acustica (CA) that contains the fluid-immersed mechanoreceptors. Hence the tympana are principally involved in transmitting and converting airb

Insecticidal activity of photoactive dyes to American and migratory grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae).

Many photoactive dyes are relatively nontoxic to vertebrates despite their insecticidal properties. Several photoactive dyes known to be toxic to some groups of insects were evaluated at various concentrations for toxicity to American and migratory grasshoppers in laboratory and field studies. Rose bengal and phloxine B were effective at inducing mortality of grasshoppers when applied at 2 and 5% to bran bait, though erythrosin B and uranine were ineffective. Partial replacement of phloxine with uranine in dye mixtures resulted in no significant loss of efficacy. Some indication of feeding inh

Diversification of the Balloon bushcrickets (Orthoptera, Hexacentrinae, Aerotegmina) in the East African mountains.

East African mountains constitute a network of isolated habitat islands among dry savannah and are thus ideal for studying species diversification processes. This study elucidated the phylogenetic and phylogeographic relationships of all bushcricket species comprising the genus Aerotegmina. Our analysis indicated that large-scale climatic and topographic processes in Africa are likely to have driven speciation in this group, and revealed the cytogenetic traits of the species. Molecular phylogeny supported the monophyly of Aerotegmina and showed that the genus probably originated in the old Eas

Impact of descending brain neurons on the control of stridulation, walking, and flight in orthoptera.

Orthopteran insects (crickets, bushcrickets, and acridid grasshoppers) are preferred preparations for the study of the central nervous mechanisms that underlie behavior. Many of their behaviors are based on central rhythm-generating circuits located in the ganglia of the ventral nerve cord. Activities of these circuits must be coordinated and adapted to the behavioral context by sensory information, which can derive from proprioceptive or exteroceptive inputs. Information from various sensory modalities converges in yet unidentified "higher brain centers" that integrate and transform it into a

Behavioral responses of Schistocerca americana (Orthoptera: Acrididae) to Azadirex (neem)-treated host plants.

Azadirex (azadirachtin and other biologically active extracts from neem trees) has been shown to have considerable potential to be used in integrated pest management systems based on its growth regulator/insecticide properties. Less well known are the antifeedant properties. The feeding-deterrent properties of a commercial azadirex formulation (Azatrol EC) were evaluated using both no-choice and choice tests, the American grasshopper, Schistocerca americana (Drury), and four host plants [savoy cabbage, Brassica oleracea variety capitata L.; cos (romaine) lettuce, Lactuca sativa variety longifo
