Orthotic devices in running injuries.

The most significant problems that we found in our running population were hamstring contractures, which affected 80 per cent, and Achilles tendon contractures, which affected 40 per cent. On first seeing a running patient who has a connective tissue stress type of injury in his or her lower extremity, we first place the patient through a 6-week trial of stretching our contractures, as this will usually correct the problem. We can correct up to 50 per cent of the problems we see just by pursuing a good stretching program. In general, the running injuries most helped by orthotic devices are the

Orthotic devices and gait in polio patients.

Polio survivors are aging and facing multiple pathologies. With age, walking becomes more difficult, partly due to locomotor deficits but also as a result of weight gain, osteoarticular degeneration, pain, cardiorespiratory problems or even post polio syndrome (PPS). These additional complications increase the risk of falls in this population where the risk of fractures is already quite high. The key joint is the knee. The muscles stabilizing this joint are often weak and patients develop compensatory gait strategies, which could be harmful to the locomotor system at medium or long term. Class

Measuring satisfaction with orthotic and prosthetic devices.

PURPOSE: To develop a measure of satisfaction with orthoses and prostheses for the Limb Injury Measurement Battery for Quality of Life (LIMB-QOL). METHODS: Items were developed to assess an individual's satisfaction with, and emotional and physical assimilation of, an orthosis and/or prosthesis. Items covered topics of satisfaction with device performance and aesthetics as well as user adaptation to a device, including usage, fit, and comfort. A pool of 65 items was administered to 471 individuals in the LIMB-QOL field testing/calibration study. Item response theory was used to evaluate and c

Orthotic Devices for the Foot and Ankle.

Millions of Americans wear ankle-foot orthotic devices for protection, pain relief, and deformity correction. Inquiries about off-the-shelf and custom devices are a common reason for evaluation with a foot and ankle surgeon or general orthopaedic surgeon. Despite limited high-quality evidence for their use, these devices can have a notable clinical impact on physical function. An up-to-date understanding of orthotic device options and their appropriate use in managing musculoskeletal pathologies applies to all orthopaedic providers. This review aims to categorize orthosis types and provide spe

Assistive devices, orthotics, and prosthetics.

Deciding on which supportive device, orthotic, or prosthetic is best suited for a given patient is a complex process involving many different factors. The ability to manage biomechanical abnormalities successfully may be enhanced by an understanding of the properties of the various materials that comprise these devices, their effect on functional performance, and other associated patient factors. Veterinary health care providers are faced with the challenge of effectively addressing the physiologic and fiscal needs of the patient in a rapidly changing patient care environment.

User satisfaction with orthotic devices and service in taiwan.

User satisfaction is afforded considerable importance as an outcome measurement in evidence-based healthcare and the client-centered approach. Several studies have investigated user satisfaction with orthoses. Few studies have investigated user satisfaction with orthoses in Taiwan. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the user satisfaction with orthotic devices and service using the Taiwanese version of Quebec User Evaluation of Satisfaction with Assistive Technology. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 280 subjects who had used orthoses and received services. The result

The use of orthotic devices in adult acquired flatfoot deformity.

PTT dysfunction is the most common cause of adult acquired flat foot deformity. The aggressive nonoperative approach has become accepted more widely, in part because of the advances in orthotic and bracing technology and options. Many patients with a PTT dysfunction can be treated effectively with conservative management protocols. The goal of alleviating pain and correcting deformities is being accomplished with the proper application of the wide spectrum of orthotic modalities available today.

[Orthotic devices in the treatment of injuries of the ankle joint].

For immobilization of foot-crus segment in case of damages of talocrural articulation region is proposed a short orthese, made of polyvic. Elastic properties of the material at convergence of the orthese walls allow to develop the compressive force in the region of distal tibiofibular syndesmosis up to 90 N. Immobilization reliability was judged by tensometry. An orthese allows to set the foot subluxation, make reposition of the malleolus fragments. In case of fracture of the lower third of fibula an appliance with concave control pelot, made on the basis of an orthese, is used. The treatment

Conservative treatment of lateral epicondylitis: comparison of two different orthotic devices.

We investigated the effectiveness of braces in the treatment of lateral epicondylitis and compared the effects of two different types of most frequently used braces. A total of 50 patients (seven males and 43 females) with an age range of 34 to 60 who had the diagnosis of lateral epicondylitis were included in the study. The patients were distributed into two groups. In group I, 25 patients (21 females and four males) were given a lateral epicondyle bandage. In group II, 25 patients (22 females and three males) were given a wrist resting splint holding the wrist in slight dorsiflexion. Evaluat

The treatment of the positional plagiocephaly with a new thermoplastic orthotic device.

INTRODUCTION: An increasing number of infants presenting with posterior cranial asymmetry are referred to the paediatric neurosurgeon for clinical evaluation. Most of these cranial dysmorphisms cannot be due to lambdoidal sinostosis, since they originate from pre- (intrauterine constraint) or postnatal (prematurity, torticollis, sleeping position) predisposing factors that have deformed the cranial vault. In the literature there is broad consensus about the conservative management of this nonsynostotic plagiocephaly by means of "positional therapy" or "orthoplasty moulding" with cranial helmet

Active counterpositioning or orthotic device to treat positional plagiocephaly?

Active counterpositioning and orthotic helmets are the two main nonsurgical management options for positional plagiocephaly. The purpose of this study was to compare these two management regimens. We included a random sample of infants referred between January 1, 1998 and October 31, 1999 to Middlemore Hospital and Auckland Surgical Center, for management of positional plagiocephaly. Two-dimensional head tracings were taken for each infant, every 3 to 12 months. From these tracings, we obtained Cranial Index and Cranial Vault Asymmetry Index. Seventy-nine infants were assessed during an averag

Effectiveness of orthotic devices in the treatment of Achilles tendinopathy: a systematic review.

Orthotic devices such as foot orthoses, splints, taping and bracing are recommended for Achilles tendinopathy (AT). This systematic review was conducted to review the current evidence for the effectiveness of orthotic devices for the treatment of mid-portion or insertional AT. Electronic bibliographic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, Current Contents, CINAHL and SPORTDiscus) were searched in May 2014. The methodological quality of included studies was evaluated using the Quality Index. Where possible, effects were determined using standardised mean differences. The strength of evidence for each int
