Reduced uptake as a mechanism of zinc tolerance in Oscillatoria anguistissima.

Oscillatoria anguistissima could tolerate 50 ppm ZnSO4 x 7H2O, and a zinc-tolerant strain with maximum tolerance concentration (MTC) of 100 ppm ZnSO4 x 7H2O was obtained by stepwise transfer to higher concentrations. The adaptation was irreversible even after three generations in metal-free medium. In the presence of metal, the tolerant strain grew with a shorter lag period of 4 days as against 6 days in the case of the wild strain. The tolerant strain had higher MTC than that of the wild strain for other metals also, viz., Ni2+, Co2+, Cu2+ and Cd2+. The zinc resistance in the tolerant strain

Toxicity of the blue-green alga Oscillatoria agardhii to the mosquito Aedes aegypti and the shrimp Artemia salina.

The cyanobacterium Oscillatoria agardhii 27, which does not produce mammalian neuro- or hepatotoxins, was highly toxic to the larval stages of the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti: its 24-h LC50 values against fourth-and second-instar larvae of A. aegypti were 8.7 and 6.1 μg live cells/ml, respectively. The toxin was water-soluble and was partially purified but the chemical nature of the toxic compound(s) is still unknown. Aqueous solutions were also toxic to the newborn larvae of the brine shrimp, Artemia salina, used for the bioassay. The toxic activity of these solutions decreased marked

Statistical optimization of photo-induced biofabrication of silver nanoparticles using the cell extract of Oscillatoria limnetica: insight on characterization and antioxidant potentiality.

Silver nanoparticles were successfully fabricated through a very simple, rapid, one-step photo-induced green approach. The formation of silver nanoparticles was accomplished using the bioactive compounds in the aqueous extract of fresh Oscillatoria limnetica biomass, which acted as a reducing and capping agent at the same time. The biosynthesis of Oscillatoria-silver nanoparticles (O-AgNPs) was investigated under the influence of different light intensities 57.75, 75.90 and 1276.51 μmol m-2 s-1 (bright sunlight). UV-Vis (UV) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy were applied to a

Consumption of toxic benthic cyanobacteria by two common demersal fish: Growth, antioxidant and liver histopathology responses.

Benthic freshwater cyanobacteria have the potential to produce toxins. Compared with more extensively studied plankton species, little is known about the impact of harmful benthic cyanobacteria on aquatic organisms. As demersal fish are usually in direct contact with benthic cyanobacteria, it is important to understand their interactive effects. This study investigated the physio-chemical responses of two demersal fish (Xenocypris davidi and Crucian carp) after exposure to benthic Oscillatoria (producing cylindrospermopsin, 2 × 106 cells/mL) for 7 days. Interestingly, benthic Oscillatoria had

Microcystin-producing and non-producing cyanobacterial blooms collected from the Central India harbor potentially pathogenic Vibrio cholerae.

On the basis of relative abundance, frequency and biovolume, the important value index ranks were assigned to individual cyanobacteria in phytoplankton samples collected from fourteen water resources of Central India. The mcyABDE genes were detected in all the blooms with Microcystis (-aeruginosa, -viridis, -panniformis, -botrys) as being the major constituent morphospecies. On the other hand, blooms composed of primarily Oscillatoria (-limosa,-agardhii, -laetevirens) along with Anabaena, Nostoc, Phormidium and Spirulina as sub-dominant forms exhibited quite a patchy distribution of one or the
