["Oseltamivir-induced delirium"].

We report the history of a religion teacher who was hospitalized in December 2009 during the H1N1 outbreak at our hospital. The 62-year-old man presented in the emergency room with malaise, high fevers and dyspnea. Relevant findings included rales over both lungs, an elevated CRP and a chest x-ray with bilateral interstitial infiltrates suggesting a H1N1 pneumonia. His comorbidities included coronary and hypertensive heart disease, diabetes mellitus Type 2 and chronic renal insufficiency. Although H1N1 virus was not detected by PCR in the nasopharyngeal swabs, Oseltamivir 2 × 75 mg/die was beg

Comparison of anti-influenza virus activity and pharmacokinetics of oseltamivir free base and oseltamivir phosphate.

Influenza viruses are major human respiratory pathogens that cause high morbidity and mortality worldwide. Currently, prophylactic vaccines and therapeutic antiviral agents are used to prevent and control influenza virus infection. Oseltamivir free base (OSV-FB), a modified generic antiviral drug of Tamiflu (oseltamivir phosphate, OSV-P), was launched in the Republic of Korea last year. Here, we examine the bioequivalence of these two compounds by assessing their antiviral efficacy in infected cells and in a mouse model. It was observed that both antivirals showed comparable efficacy against 1

Impact of oseltamivir on the risk of cancer.

PURPOSE: Mounting evidence has revealed the anti-cancer activity of various anti-viral drugs. Oseltamivir phosphate (OP), namely Tamiflu®, is routinely used to combat influenza infections. Although evidence has indicated the anti-cancer effects of OP in vitro and in vivo, little information is known about the effect of OP use on cancers in humans. METHODS: A nationwide population-based cohort study involving 13,977,101 cases with 284,733 receiving OP was performed to examine the association between OP use and cancers using the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan between 2009

Impact of Oseltamivir and Diabetes Development.

Background/Objectives: Influenza is a major global health challenge, causing thousands of deaths annually. Antiviral drugs, particularly oseltamivir, a neuraminidase inhibitor, have become essential therapeutic options due to their oral bioavailability and efficacy. Previous studies suggest a potential association between oseltamivir use and the onset of diabetes mellitus. However, further investigation is needed to establish a definitive link. Methods: This retrospective cohort study utilized data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD), including 1,631,968 patient

Oseltamivir in pregnancy and birth outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to influenza or fever is associated with risk of congenital malformations. Oseltamivir is used to treat influenza and to provide post-exposure prophylaxis. We examined the association between oseltamivir use during pregnancy and birth outcomes. METHODS: This was a nationwide registry-based prevalence study with individual level data linkage, in a setting of universal health care access. We included all recorded pregnancies in Denmark in 2002-2013, and used data from population registries to examine associations between dispensings for oseltamivir during pregnancy

Oseltamivir phosphate interaction with model membranes.

Oseltamivir belongs to the neuraminidase inhibitors, developed against the influenza virus, and registered under the trademark Tamiflu. Despite its long-term acquaintance, there is limited information in the literature about its physicochemical and structural properties in a lipid-water system. We present an experimentally determined partition coefficient with structural information on the interaction of oseltamivir with the model membrane, its possible location, and its effect on the membrane thermodynamics. The hydrophobic part of the lipid bilayer is affected to a moderate extent, which was

Oseltamivir induced oral-only erythema multiforme.

Severe dermatologic and mucosal adverse reactions to oseltamivir are rare. To date, only two other case reports have described mucosal changes secondary to oseltamivir, but both cases were associated with concomitant skin changes. We report a case of a previously healthy 18-year-old-male who developed oral-only erythema multiforme after being treated with oseltamivir for influenza B. Given the frequency of which oseltamivir is prescribed, we highlight the importance of recognizing this uncommon but serious adverse reaction.

Tongue swelling in association with oseltamivir (Tamiflu).

A 29-year-old lady presented with an increasingly swollen tongue 3 days after commencing oseltamivir (Tamiflu) for flu-like symptoms. Once identified as the cause, her symptoms rapidly improved with antihistamines and discontinuing the Tamiflu. The authors find only one other case in the literature reporting this very rare side effect.

Discovery and development of oseltamivir at Gilead Sciences.

John Martin's untimely death in March 2021 was a huge loss for us personally, Gilead Sciences, the company he built over 30 years and the scientific community concerned with antiviral therapies. We wish to honor John's legacy by retelling the discovery and history of Tamiflu and his contributions to it. Without his vision, persistence, and keen eye for opportunities, Tamiflu would not exist and Gilead's path would not have been the same. His strategic thinking around the first oral flu drug is still quite relevant today, when we are still in the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. John explained it simply in

Oseltamivir-Induced Mania in a Patient With Influenza A.

Oseltamivir is an antiviral drug often preferred in treating viral infections. Its use has increased owing to annual influenza outbreaks and the COVID-19 pandemic. Although its adverse effects are often seen in the gastrointestinal system, it has other adverse effects that can prevent its use, for example, neuropsychiatric events. In this case report, we present a manic episode case caused by the use of oseltamivir.

Oseltamivir-Associated Supraventricular Tachycardia in an Infant.

Oseltamivir is a neuraminidase inhibitor that is labeled for prophylaxis and treatment of influenza. We describe a previously healthy 4-month-old infant who tested positive for influenza A and was started on oseltamivir. One hour after receiving his first dose of oseltamivir, the infant had a diaphoretic episode and appeared grey and clammy. The infant was subsequently seen by the primary care physician and referred for admission to the hospital. Approximately 40 minutes after the second dose of oseltamivir in the hospital, the infant's heart rate rose to greater than 300 bpm. An electrocardio

Oseltamivir for control of influenza at mass gatherings.

The use of oseltamivir at mass gatherings (MGs) or other crowded settings has not previously been systematically examined to synthesise the evidence of its usefulness. Here we have evaluated its effectiveness by reviewing the published literature. The effectiveness of oseltamivir at MGs is controversial because published clinical trials evaluating this are lacking. Its use, to date, has been predominantly therapeutic, i.e. to treat patients with confirmed or suspected influenza. There are some examples of its use in mass prophylaxis at MGs and other crowded settings like schools and camps, and

[The study on efficacy of oseltamivir for influenza A in children].

From January 2001 to July 2002, we investigated the duration of fever, the duration of hospitalization, the frequency of antipyretic use, and other clinical symptoms of 162 inpatients with influenza A virus infection, and compared them with oseltamivir-treated, amantadine-treated, and untreated groups. The duration of fever and the duration of hospitalization treated were significantly shortened in the oseltamivir-treated group than in the amantadine-treated group and untreated group. There was no difference in the duration of fever between patients treated by oseltamivir at 2 mg/kg/day and th

Oseltamivir-Associated Bradycardia in Critically Ill Patients.

BACKGROUND: Oseltamivir is frequently administered to critically ill patients with presumed influenza. It may modulate Na+, K+, and Ca2+ channels to produce bradycardia. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between oseltamivir and bradycardia in critically ill patients and assess parameters associated with bradycardia. METHODS: This was a retrospective audit of 203 critically ill adults with presumed influenza receiving at least 2 doses of oseltamivir. The primary outcome was the occurrence of bradycardia, defined as a heart rate (HR) ≤59 beats per minute (BPM) while receiving oseltamivir

In vitro activity of favipiravir and neuraminidase inhibitor combinations against oseltamivir-sensitive and oseltamivir-resistant pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus.

Few anti-influenza drugs are licensed in the United States for the prevention and therapy of influenza A and B virus infections. This shortage, coupled with continuously emerging drug resistance, as detected through a global surveillance network, seriously limits our anti-influenza armamentarium. Combination therapy appears to offer several advantages over traditional monotherapy in not only delaying development of resistance but also potentially enhancing single antiviral activity. In the present study, we evaluated the antiviral drug susceptibilities of fourteen pandemic influenza A (H1N1) v

Prophylaxis of ferrets with nitazoxanide and oseltamivir combinations is more effective at reducing the impact of influenza a virus infection compared to oseltamivir monotherapy.

Combination therapy is an alternative approach to reduce viral shedding and improve clinical outcomes following influenza virus infections. In this study we used oseltamivir (OST), a neuraminidase inhibitor and nitazoxanide (NTZ), a host directed drug, and found in vitro that the combination of these two antivirals have a synergistic relationship. Using the ferret model of (A/Perth/265/2009, (H1N1)pdm09), virus infections, we found that the combination of NTZ and OST was more effective than either NTZ or OST independently in preventing infection and reducing duration of viral shedding. However
