Studies in osteoarthritis of the hip. 3. Congenital subluxation and osteoarthritis of the hip.

Although congenital subluxation of the hip is an important primary abnormality, upon which OA hip may later supervene, other factors may also be important in individual patients. When osteoarthritis is seen with subluxation, it probably represents congenital subluxation and not displacement of the femoral head secondary to remodelling. Osteoarthritis in these cases is usually superolateral or supermedial in type, with the major impact of the disease in the superior articular cartilage. A similar form of osteoarthritis is seen in cases where leg-length disparity exists, with or without the pres

Hip osteoarthritis - histopathological aspects.

Osteoarthritis is a complex, degenerative disease that can affect all the anatomical structures of the synovial joints. Most frequently, the joints of the hand, hip, and knee are affected, especially in the elderly patients. In our study, we evaluated 27 femoral heads, examining the histopathological changes that occurred in the articular cartilage, subchondral bone, and perisynovial soft tissues. At the level of the articular cartilage, there were observed a reduction in thickness, deformation of the articular surface, degradation of the cartilaginous matrix, the occurrence of fissures or fra

[Pathogenesis of hip osteoarthritis].

Coxarthrosis is the most frequently occurring hip disease, is the most common type of osteoarthritis in general and is the second most frequent cause of chronic invalidity. Causes are inherited hip diseases (e.g. dysplasia), growth diseases (e. g. Perthes' disease, slipped capital femoral epiphysis), injuries (fractured femur, fractures of the femoral head or acetabulum, necrosis of the femoral head), and inflammatory, rheumatic or metabolic diseases. Hip deformities such as hip dysplasia or protrusio acetabuli lead to increased mechanical deterioration as a result of the pathological anatomy

Acupuncture for hip osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Hip osteoarthritis (OA) is a major cause of pain and functional limitation. Few hip OA treatments have been evaluated for safety and effectiveness. Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical therapy which aims to treat disease by inserting very thin needles at specific points on the body. OBJECTIVES: To assess the benefits and harms of acupuncture in patients with hip OA. SEARCH METHODS: We searched Cochrane CENTRAL, MEDLINE, and Embase all through March 2018. SELECTION CRITERIA: We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared acupuncture with sham acupuncture, a

Imaging of Osteoarthritis of the Hip.

Hip osteoarthritis (OA) is a disease process that impacts the aging population. OA of the hip is the result of degeneration of the articular cartilage, underlying bone and soft tissue structures. Radiography is the first-line modality for imaging OA. Radiographic assessment includes imaging features of joint space narrowing, sclerosis, osteophytes, and bony deformities. CT can provide detailed evaluation of the hip with multiplanar reformats. MRI can assess bone marrow signal, articular cartilage damage, and labral abnormalities. Other disease process may appear similar or present concurrently

Etiology of osteoarthritis of the hip.

More than 90% of patients with so-called primary or idiopathic osteoarthritis of the hips in whom sufficient data were available to make an assessment of the normality of the hip joint at the cessation of growth clearly showed demonstrable abnormalities in the hip joint. The most common are mild acetabular dysplasia and/or pistol grip deformity. This latter deformity is associated with mild slipped capital femoral epiphysis (recognized or unrecognized at the time), Legg-Perthes' disease (recognized or unrecognized at the time), multiple epiphyseal dysplasia, spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, and/o

Patterns of osteoarthritis of the hip.

The division of osteoarthritis into primary and secondary varieties implies that these are aetiologically distinct entities, the former being due to some intrinsic defect of cartilage and the latter resulting from previous articular damage. This traditional concept is questioned and the hypothesis is advanced that osteoarthritis is always secondary to some underlying abnormality of the joint. A detailed clinical, radiographic and morbid anatomical study of 327 cases of osteoarthritis of the hip is presented. In all but twenty-seven some predisposing abnormality of the joint was diagnosed: 107

How does hip osteoarthritis differ from knee osteoarthritis?

Hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA) are leading causes of global disability. Most research to date has focused on the knee, with results often extrapolated to the hip, and this extends to treatment recommendations in clinical guidelines. Extrapolating results from research on knee OA may limit our understanding of disease characteristics specific to hip OA, thereby constraining development and implementation of effective treatments. This review highlights differences between hip and knee OA with respect to prevalence, prognosis, epigenetics, pathophysiology, anatomical and biomechanical factors,

Survey of Shoulder Osteoarthritis in Patients who Underwent Total Hip Arthroplasty for Hip Osteoarthritis.

To the best of our knowledge, no previous studies have reported a relationship between osteoarthritis (OA) of the lower limbs and OA of the shoulder joints. We evaluated the correlation between shoulder OA and hip OA. We collected contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) images of the shoulder joints of 159 patients with hip OA who underwent primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). The images, taken 1 week after THA to monitor venous thromboembolism (VTE), were used to examine the prevalence of shoulder OA. They were compared with those of 103 controls who underwent CECT during the same perio

The contribution of hip geometry to the prediction of hip osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine how well measures of hip geometry can predict radiological incident hip osteoarthritis (HOA) compared to well known clinical risk factors. DESIGN: The study population is part of the Rotterdam Study, a prospective population-based cohort. Baseline pelvic radiographs were used to measure hip geometry by two methods: Statistical Shape Models (SSM) and predefined geometry parameters (PGPs). Incident HOA (Kellgren and Lawrence (KL) ≥ 2) was assessed in 688 participants after 6.5 years without radiographic HOA at baseline. The ability to predict HOA was quantified using the

Arthritis: Knee and Hip Osteoarthritis.

Knee and hip osteoarthritis (OA) are two of the leading causes of disability globally. Knee OA is characterized by gradual degeneration of articular cartilage, leading to pain, stiffness, and functional limitations. Patients older than 50 years typically present with knee OA, but it can manifest earlier, particularly following traumatic knee injuries. Symptoms include pain, effusion, stiffness, and reduced range of motion. Radiographs commonly are used to confirm a diagnosis of knee OA. Nonsurgical management options include weight loss, lifestyle interventions, orthotic and assistive devices,

Septic arthritis complicating hip osteoarthritis.

Four patients with osteoarthritis of the hip, who developed septic arthritis of the affected joint, are reported. The septic arthritis developed insidiously and was diagnosed with difficulty. One patient died, two required subsequent joint excision, and one arthrodesis despite antibiotics. The presence of a recognised predisposing factor to septic arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis or a surgically replaced joint, can provide a diagnostic pointer. These cases suggest that osteoarthritis, similarly, is a predisposing factor. It is concluded that joint sepsis should be considered if a patien

Hip Pain and Mobility Deficits-Hip Osteoarthritis: Revision 2025.

The 2025 Hip Pain and Mobility Deficits - Hip Osteoarthritis Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) is a revision of the 2017 CPG and represents the second update for this CPG from APTA Orthopedics. In preparation for this update, a review was conducted on the topic of hip osteoarthritis (OA) to identify articles published after March 2016. The topics addressed in this 2025 CPG revision will specifically attempt to answer the question: What is the evidence to support physical therapy interventions directed at patients with hip OA? Prevalence, pathoanatomical features, and clinical course were discu

Antidepressants for hip and knee osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Although pain is common in osteoarthritis, most people fail to achieve adequate analgesia. Increasing acknowledgement of the contribution of pain sensitisation has resulted in the investigation of medications affecting pain processing with central effects. Antidepressants contribute to pain management in other conditions where pain sensitisation is present. OBJECTIVES: To assess the benefits and harms of antidepressants for the treatment of symptomatic knee and hip osteoarthritis in adults. SEARCH METHODS: We used standard, extensive Cochrane search methods. The latest search was

The impact of mobilization on hip osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis is one of the most common joint disorders. It causes pain, stiffness and a decreased range of motion which have a significant impact on daily activities and gait, consequently leading to disability. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to compare hip mobilization with non-weight bearing exercises. METHODS: A total of 57 females aged between 55-65 were divided into 2 groups. In the control group non-weight bearing exercises were conducted, whereas the research group received hip mobilization. RESULTS: The Lequesne index significantly improved in the research group a

Amyloid deposition in osteoarthritis of the hip.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine the frequency of amyloid deposition in patients with end-stage hip osteoarthritis (OA). Further, their impact on the clinical situation and the OA severity were analyzed. METHODS: Fifty patients with OA who consecutively underwent total hip replacement were prospectively evaluated. The X-rays of the patients were analyzed using a radiological score (Kellgren-Lawrence) to quantify the amount of radiological changes. A clinical score [Harris hip score (HHS)] was preoperatively calculated for every patient. Specimens from the femoral head of bone and

Hip osteoarthritis: where is the pain?

BACKGROUND: Pain radiating below the knee is typically thought to originate from the lumbosacral spine rather than degenerative hip pathology. We investigated the lower limb distribution of pain using body image maps in 60 patients awaiting primary hip arthroplasty and in 60 patients awaiting spinal decompression for confirmed spinal stenosis. The perception of 33 orthopaedic registrars regarding distribution of hip pain was also assessed. RESULTS: Groin and buttock pain are significantly more common in hip osteoarthritis. The presence of groin pain is 84.3% of those sensitive for hip dysfunc
