Hamatum osteoblastoma.

We report the case of an osteoblastoma of the hamate bone that was successfully treated by curettage. This tumor is very rare in a carpal bone and only nine cases have been reported in the literature. Pathological examination is mandatory before treatment due to the lack of distinctive clinical and radiological features. Osteoblastomas are benign, but potentially aggressive bone tumors. Treatment of the lesion may either be a conservative "intralesional resection" or radical "wide en bloc resection". The latter option, which has non-negligible functional consequences in the wrist, should be re

Aggressive osteoblastoma.

The clinical, radiological and pathological features of two cases of an osteogenic tumour with long survival are described. The tumours have the histological pattern of benign osteoblastoma with other more cellular and aggressive features suggestive of a low grade osteosarcoma. They are locally invasive but the absence of metastases indicates that separation from both entities is justified clinically and pathologically. The term aggressive osteoblastoma is suggested.

Benign osteoblastoma.

Benign osteoblastoma is a benign bone-forming lesion, seen most commonly in the first three decades of life and having a predilection for the vertebral column and the short limb bones. It is distinguishable from osteoid osteoma on the bases of size (being more than one centimetre in diameter) and the absence of surrounding sclerosis. The two lesions, however, are probably of the same origin and behave differently because of their different situations. Treatment is by operation, either excision in whole if practicable, or thorough piecemeal excision and curettage, with bone grafting of the defe

Osteoblastoma of the spine.

A retrograde analysis of 64 spinal osteoblastomas treated by surgery during the period 1963 - 2005 has been made. Spinal osteoblastomas were presented in 36% of all skeletal localizations. There were 44 male and 20 female patients. The average age of patients at the time of surgery was 14 years. Localizations of the osteoblastomas were cervical spine in 8 cases, dorsal spine in 16 cases, lumbar spine in 38 cases and sacrum in 2 cases. Osteoblastomas predominantly involved posterolateral vertebral elements, although in two cases a primary localization was in vertebral bodies. Neurological defic

Osteoblastoma of the spine.

Osteoid osteomas and osteoblastomas have similar histologic characteristics, although their clinical course in the spine may be significantly different. At the authors' institution, spinal osteoblastomas constituted 46% (30/65) of all osteoblastomas treated. Sixteen of the lesions occurred in the lumbar spine (53%), eight in the thoracic spine, and six in the cervical spine. In all regions of the spine, the posterior elements and pedicles were more frequently involved than the vertebral body. Twenty patients had pain or other symptoms for more than 12 months before diagnosis. Six of eight pati

The spectrum of osteoblastoma.

Benign osteoblastoma is a rare tumor, more frequent in males, usually occurring in patients under the age of 30 years, and is seen most frequently in the spine, femur, tibia, and mandible. Its varied roentgenographic appearance may suggest a large osteoid osteoma or an aneurysmal bone cyst, but about one-fourth of cases present a picture consistent with a malignant neoplasm. The roentgen changes in the spine are frequently subtle and require care for identification. Differentiation from osteogenic sarcoma is sometimes difficult even with histological material, because some low grade osteogenic

Recurrent osteoblastoma of the maxilla.

Osteoblastoma is a benign neoplasm which commonly occurs in the vertebral column and long bones. The tumour grows slowly and rarely recurs after surgery. This report presents the clinicopathological and radiological findings of a case of recurrent osteoblastoma in the maxilla. A 7-year-old male patient visited our department with chief complaints of left facial swelling and pain. A panoramic radiograph showed a homogeneous radio-opaque expansile lesion in the left maxilla. The lesion was thought to be fibrous dysplasia and the patient underwent a surgical excision using the Caldwell-Luc proced

Osteoblastoma in the region of the hip.

Osteoblastoma occurring in the region of the hip is very rare, and vague symptoms with uncharacteristic radiographic features often lead to misdiagnosis. Because of radiographic and histological similarities, it must be carefully distinguished from osteoid osteoma, aneurysmal bone cyst, giant cell tumor, and osteosarcoma. Computed tomography is the preferred imaging modality as it is able to detect the nidus and images will not exhibit the flare phenomenon caused by surrounding inflammation seen with magnetic resonance imaging. For hip joint lesions in weight-bearing areas, intralesional curet

Osteoblastoma of the nasal septum.

OBJECTIVES: To present a case of, and to review the literature concerning, osteoblastoma of the nasal cavity, and to demonstrate the importance of considering this rare entity when assessing patients presenting with a nasal septum lesion. CASE REPORT: Benign osteoblastoma is a rare tumour, constituting 1 per cent of all bone tumours. Most cases occur in the long bones. Osteoblastoma involving the nasal cavity is rare, with only 10 reported cases in the English-language literature. Most nasal cavity cases originate from the ethmoid sinus and spread to involve the nasal cavity. There are only f

Osteoblastoma of the ethmoid sinus.

An osteoblastoma is a benign bone tumor that most often occurs in the vertebral column and the long bones of the extremities. Paranasal sinus involvement is very rare. We report an osteoblastoma of the ethmoid sinus in a 13-year-old boy who presented with exophthalmos. CT demonstrated an expansile, lesion of the right ethmoid sinus, which caused the orbital contents to be compressed and deviated to the right. A mixture of ground glass opacity and dense bone was present. The less dense portions of the lesion showed intense enhancement on MRI; a signal void was present on all sequences in the de

Osteoblastoma of the odontoid process.

A case of an osteoblastoma located in the odontoid process in a 7 year-old boy who presented with torticollis is reported. CT scan and MRI disclosed the lesion, but diagnosis was established by a CT-guided needle biopsy. Surgery through a transoral approach allowed total excision of the tumor. This is, to our knowledge, the first case reported of an osteoblastoma of the odontoid process.

Osteoblastomas of the cervical spine.

Osteoblastomas of the cervical spine frequently occur with anterior vertebral body involvement despite the classical teaching, which suggests that involvement is usually confined to the posterior elements. A review of osteoblastomas that involved the cervical spine was conducted at a single institution over 20 years. Four patients were identified with osteoblastoma of the cervical spine from a total of 13 spinal osteoblastomas, and their conditions were assessed to determine the anatomic extent of neoplastic involvement, the surgical margins obtained at resection, methods of spinal stabilizati

[Osteoid osteoma and osteoblastoma].

A follow-up study, based on clinical, radiological and pathological information was performed of 20 patients who had suffered from an osteoid osteoma and of three patients who had been treated for an osteoblastoma in the period 1978-1988. 50% of the patients mentioned both pain at night and a good reaction to salicylates. In 87% of the cases a correct diagnosis was made with the aid of conventional radiography, tomography and bone scanning. Primary treatment consisted of intracapsular (mostly piecemeal) excision in all cases. A local recurrence was observed in one patient with osteoid osteoma

Osteoblastoma of the temporal bone.

Benign osteoblastoma is an uncommon primary tumor of the bone. Any area of the skeleton may be affected by this tumor, but its occurrence in the temporal bone and middle ear is extremely rare. Clinical symptoms are nonspecific, even in the middle ear, and the diagnosis is often difficult in spite a complete physical and radiological examination. A biopsy is usually necessary for definitive diagnosis. Because of its potential for recurrence, local invasion, and, rarely, malignant transformation, a complete surgical excision remains the treatment of choice for osteoblastoma. We report a case of

Benign osteoblastoma of the orbit.

Benign osteoblastoma is a rare lesion of the orbit--only five cases have been described previously. The usual location is in the vertebral column and to a lesser extent in the skull. Although it is an invasive lesion, recurrences have not been reported after en bloc excision. The authors report a 10-year-old boy who presented with upper lid swelling, proptosis, and hypophthalmia. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed a calcified mass in the superior orbit which had eroded through the roof, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a well-circumscribed mass between the periorbita and dura. Benign osteoblastoma: range of manifestations.

A study of twenty-five new cases of osteoblastoma and a review of 172 previously reported cases demonstrated the wide spectrum of manifestations of the lesion. The ratio of males to females was 2:1, with 80 per cent of the patients being under thirty years of age. The duration of complaints prior to diagnosis averaged seventeen months. The majority of the lesions were found in the spine or major long bones of the lower extremity. When complete excision of the tumor was done a cure always was the result, but incomplete curettage also affected a cure in some cases. Three cases presented in detai

Osteoblastoma of the Hamate: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoblastomas are rare, benign, osteoid-producing primary bone tumors that typically occur in adolescents and young adults. They constitute only 1% of all bone tumors and are exceptionally rare in the hand and wrist. Carpal bone involvement is exceedingly uncommon, with only 9 cases reported in the literature involving the hamate. This case is important to report because the occurrence of this neoplasm in the fifth decade of life is extremely rare, making it one of the very few reports of hamate osteoblastoma in late adulthood. CASE REPORT: A 51-year-old male presented with a 2
