Mental health outcomes among osteopathic physicians during COVID-19.

OBJECTIVE: SARS-CoV-2 infection responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated a significant burden on the mental health of health care providers. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the mental health symptoms among osteopathic physicians from a single academic institution during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, survey-based study conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic from January 2021 to March 2021. The survey was emailed to 4239 alumni physicians from the single medical school in California, USA. Burnout, anxiety, and depression were assessed by the s

Osteopathic manipulative treatment for allopathic physicians: piloting a longitudinal curriculum.

CONTEXT: Under the Accreditation for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) single accreditation system, there is likely to be increasing interest and opportunity for teaching osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to allopathic residents and residency faculty. When learning OMT, allopathic physicians (MDs) have distinct needs compared with osteopathic medical students. For example, MDs already have a foundation in anatomy and medical vocabulary, but incorporating an osteopathic approach to patient care may require a paradigm shift. Thus, a unique approach to osteopathic education for MDs in res

Perceptions and reported practices of osteopathic physicians in diagnosing and treating addiction.

The objective of this study was to assess the perceptions and reported practices of osteopathic physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of addiction. Copies of survey questions were sent to the 344 members of the West Virginia Osteopathic Society. A total of 176 (51.2%) physicians responded; of these responses, 166 surveys were used for analysis. Respondents included 130 practicing physicians and 36 physicians in internship or residency training programs. Of those responding, 133 were men and 33 were women, and ages ranged from 24 to 81 years with a mean of 41.6 years. Respondents who were g

The unique role of osteopathic physicians in treating patients with low back pain.

Low back pain is a common and costly condition in industrialized nations. Consequently, a variety of treatment modalities and providers are available. A widely recognized clinical practice guideline states that spinal manipulation, as potentially provided by various types of practitioners, can be helpful for patients with acute low back problems without radiculopathy when used within the first month of symptoms. The underlying principles of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) suggest the potential utility of OMT in both acute and chronic low back pain. The author summarizes the methodolog

Descriptive study of interprofessional collaboration between physicians and osteopaths for the pediatric population in Quebec, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Osteopathy is an increasingly popular healthcare approach that uses a wide variety of therapeutic manual techniques to address pain and somatic dysfunction. In Quebec, Canada, osteopathy is the complementary medicine most often recommended by family physicians. However, factors fostering the development of interprofessional collaboration (IPC) between physicians and osteopaths are unknown. This study aimed to describe the current situation in terms of IPC among practitioners working with pediatric patients. METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire was sent to osteopaths, family

Chronic pain outcomes among patients treated by osteopathic vs. allopathic physicians: a 36-month follow-up study.

CONTEXT: Osteopathic physicians take a whole-person approach to medical care that may be seen in their relationships with patients and may involve utilizing osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) as an alternative to opioid therapy in patients with chronic pain. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the outcomes of patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP) treated by osteopathic and allopathic physicians in the United States utilizing a pragmatic design reflecting medical care in real-world settings, including an assessment of potential mediators of osteopathic medical care. Long-term chronic pain outcomes among patients treated by osteopathic physicians: per-protocol analysis of a retrospective cohort study.

CONTEXT: Osteopathic medical care has been associated with better long-term outcomes in an intention-to-treat analysis of data from a retrospective cohort study involving chronic low back pain (CLBP). The beneficial outcomes attributable to osteopathic medical care were mediated by physician empathy and osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) in the subset of patients who consistently utilized osteopathic physicians compared with those who utilized allopathic physicians. The process and outcomes of chronic low back pain treatment provided by osteopathic and allopathic physicians: a retrospective cohort study.

CONTEXT: Osteopathic physicians are trained to treat patients with musculoskeletal symptoms, to treat somatic dysfunction with osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), and to avoid unnecessarily prescribing drugs such as opioids. It is also generally believed that osteopathic physicians provide a unique patient-centered approach to medical care that involves effective communication and empathy. Such training and characteristics of osteopathic medical care (OMC) may enhance clinical outcomes among patients with chronic pain. Integrating Osteopathic Care Into Treatment of the Breastfeeding Dyad: Anatomic and Physiologic Considerations.

Care of the breastfeeding dyad involves an interprofessional and multidisciplinary team that may include lactation consultants, physicians, bodyworkers, and more. One often underutilized resource in the care of both breastfeeding parents and their infants is osteopathic physicians (Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine or DOs). DOs are full-scope physicians who have additional training in osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). Osteopathic manipulative treatment is a form of manual medicine that can be utilized to optimize the breastfeeding relationship. It can be useful to address latch challenge

Osteopathic Manipulation in the Management of Chronic Pain: Current Perspectives.

Chronic pain is a common condition that often interferes with work or other activities. Guidelines support the use of non-pharmacological treatments, such as spinal manipulation, in patients with chronic pain. Osteopathic physicians in the United States are uniquely positioned to manage chronic pain because their professional philosophy embraces the biopsychosocial model and they are trained in the use of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to complement conventional medical care. This narrative review provides current perspectives on the osteopathic approach to chronic pain management, i

Osteopathic approach to sexual dysfunction: holistic care to improve patient satisfaction and prevent mortality and morbidity.

Erectile dysfunction has multiple causes; most commonly the causes are mixed, a combination of physical and physiologic dysfunction. Two hypothetical case presentations provide the context for a discussion of the neurologic basis of erectile dysfunction and sexual dysfunction from the perspective of osteopathic medicine's holistic approach. Both offer osteopathic physicians the challenge of correcting structural, biological, and chemical defects to restore normal function. One of the cases is representative of patients who do not tell their physicians about sexual dysfunction unless their phys

Osteopathic manipulative treatment applications for the emergency department patient.

The emergency department (ED) setting offers osteopathic physicians multiple opportunities to provide osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) as either the primary therapy or as an adjunct to the intervention. In doing so, osteopathic physicians can decrease or eliminate the morbidity and symptoms associated with protracted dysfunction. Low back pain, chest pain, torticollis, asthma, and sinusitis are some of the illnesses in which OMT should be implemented as part of the management plan, note the authors. They provide a guide to the general usage of OMT when the aforementioned illnesses pres

A superficial dissection approach to the sphenopalatine (pterygopalatine) ganglion to emphasize osteopathic clinical relevance.

The sphenopalatine (pterygopalatine) ganglion (SPG) is the most superficial ganglia to manipulate from the oral cavity. It has parasympathetic and sensory fibers directly affecting the paranasal sinuses as well as the palatine, nasal, pharyngeal, and lacrimal glands. The SPG can be manipulated intraorally by students and physicians utilizing osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to relieve congestion associated with sinusitis, allergies, headaches, and upper respiratory infections. Within osteopathic medical education programs, students have anecdotally had difficulty identifying this gangl

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment for Pertussis in the 19th and 20th Centuries: A Structured Historical Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Cases of pertussis, or whooping cough, have increased in recent years despite widespread vaccination and adequate antibiotic treatments. Osteopathic physicians may want to consider using osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) as an adjunctive treatment modality for pertussis; however, suitable OMT techniques are not specified in the research literature. OBJECTIVE: To search the historical osteopathic literature to identify OMT techniques that were used in the management of pertussis in the pre-antibiotic era. METHODS: A structured literature review of electronic databases and h

Assessing the Knowledge of the Osteopathic Profession in New York City's Eastern European Communities.

Background According to the decennial Osteopathic Survey of Healthcare in America, the osteopathic profession has been steadily gaining recognition in the United States, particularly among the White/Caucasian demographic. This, however, does not take into account immigrant European communities that, while racially classified as White/Caucasian, may be unexposed to osteopathic physicians (DOs) in their home country and may be reticent to osteopathic manipulative medicine. Data on non-English-speaking communities are limited and can mask the need for further outreach. This study aimed to identif

Osteopathic Representation in Orthopaedic Literature: A 25-Year Analysis of Publication Trends of Former AOA Residency Programs and Osteopathic Medical Schools.

BACKGROUND: Orthopaedic surgery remains one of the most competitive specialties. Osteopathic candidates have recently matched at lower rates than allopathic students. One disparity that may exist is research, which has become a critical component of candidate applications. The aim of this study was to examine the representation of osteopathic-affiliated first authors, senior authors, and overall osteopathic-affiliated authors, in the top 25 leading US orthopaedic journals published between 2000 and 2024.
