[Development of health care services in Bosnia-Herzegovina during the Ottoman empire].

Organized health service in Bosnia and Herzegovina practically started by the treatment of the sick in the Hadji Sinan's Tekke that was founded in 1768. Before that, the civilian population had been mainly treated in their homes, while the army were treated in barracks or hired hans (inns). As late as the nineteenth century, health care was provided by quack doctors, treating physicians or surgeons and barbers, who were trained, beside the circumcision of male children, for tooth extraction, broken bone setting, and sometimes even for performing minor surgical operations (a specially trained b

The Last Great Plague of Istanbul, 1812: An Overture to Biopolitics in the Ottoman Empire.

Starting in 1812, a plague epidemic killed a third of the population in Istanbul and a third of the population of Izmir. It lasted at least until 1819 and killed some 500,000 people across the Balkans and the eastern and southern coasts of the Mediterranean, including Malta, Algiers, and Bucharest. Historians have neither examined what this epidemic meant for life in the Empire's capital, nor spelt out what it meant for the Empire's future. In fact, the magnitude of the epidemic has been largely missed in the few descriptive studies that exist, possibly due to the silence of Ottoman state arch

Mandating immunity in the Ottoman Empire: A history of public health education and compulsory vaccination.

Histories of medicine and vaccinology routinely reference the Ottoman Empire with regard to Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, her children's variolation, and the transmission of this knowledge throughout Britain and thereafter Europe. Few, however, follow the empire's ongoing relationship with vaccination after the Montagu family's departure. This article examines this aspect of Ottoman medical history by noting how Jenner's advances diffused back into the empire and then presenting and analyzing how imperial, medical, and even community leaders began to both educationally condition the population an

Wartime infections and tragedies at the beginning of the 20th century in the Eastern part of Turkey.

In the early 20th century, Europe and the Ottoman Empire as a whole experienced a large number of epidemic diseases, and several wars. During World War I (WW1) a general mobilization of the medical services under Ottoman Empire rule was enacted. However, shortages of food and water, unfavourable weather and poor sanitary conditions resulted in numerous diseases at the battle fronts. Indeed, during the Ottoman-Russian war on the Eastern Front, the Turks suffered massive loss of life. This article therefore emphasises that during WW1, such loss of life in the Ottoman Army on the Eastern Front, w

[Were the Turks in the 18th century variolated against smallpox? the analysis of a typical example of misconception in medical cross-cultural transmission].

There has been a continuing misconception for almost three centuries since the transmission of variolation from Turkey (actually the Ottoman Empire) to England that this was a practice of the Turkish Muslims. There are many sources of cogent evidence that variolation in the 18th century in the Ottoman Empire was opposed by Muslims due to their religious beliefs. This article uses cultural anthropology in its analysis of the reasons for the misconception.

Intestinal Parasites in an Ottoman Period Latrine from Acre (Israel) Dating to the Early 1800s CE.

The aim of this study is to determine the species of parasites that affected the inhabitants of the city of Acre on the coast of the eastern Mediterranean during the Ottoman Period. This is the first archaeological study of parasites in the Ottoman Empire. We analysed sediment from a latrine dating to the early 1800s for the presence of helminth eggs and protozoan parasites which caused dysentery. The samples were examined using light microscopy and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. We found evidence for roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides), whipworm (Trichuris trichiura), fish tapew

[HEALTH CARE IN SLAVONIAN PROVINCE DURING THE 19th CENTURY].

Due to its proximity to the Ottoman Empire, Slavonia was constantly exposed to the threat of invasion by numerous infectious and non-infectious diseases. An additional aggravating circumstance was the poor living and hygienic conditions in Slavonia, poverty, droughts, and floods. After the withdrawal of the Ottomans at the end of the 17th century, medical care was provided only by a few barbers and ‘ranarniks’ (i.e., feldshers) who remained in the Slavonian province. Due to the poor medical care, in 1770, the Empress and Queen Maria Theresa issued the General Health Law, which applied to the e

Empiric physiology in epidemiologic doctrines of the 18th century, Hungarian General Norm of Health in 1770.

According to standard textbooks, the last episode of European New Age plague pandemic died out by 1720 in Marseilles. Despite this allegation, the pandemic continued in well-documented new outbreaks, which attacked and devastated Central and Eastern Europe throughout the first half of the 18th century. At the beginning, military campaigns spread the infection out of the Ottoman Empire. Later on commercial goods took over this role via land or sea from Asia or out of the eastern Mediterranean region. Finally, the plague in Europe--except Russia and the Ottoman Empire--"died out" virtually by th

ŞEREFFEDDIN SABUNCUOĞLU (1386–147?): AN OVERLOOKED YET BRILLIANT OTTOMAN PHYSICIAN.

Şereffeddin Sabuncuoğlu was a skilled surgeon from the early Ottoman period (15th century) in the Anatolian city of Amasya. He was a physician, surgeon, trainer, scientist, miniature artist, calligrapher, and the author of three significant books in addition to four other known manuscripts. In this study, unlike the previous historical clinical articles about him focused only on certain chapters he had written in his book 'Imperial Surgery', we have tried to focus on his whole life, including his personal experiences and things happening in his immediate environment.

Georgios Photeinos and his Hellenic Pharmacopoeia (1835) published in Ottoman Smyrna.

The Hellenic Pharmacopoeia, authored by Ottoman pharmacist Georgios Photeinos and published in 1835 in Smyrna (modern-day Izmir, Türkiye), is a historically significant yet largely overlooked work in 19th-century pharmaceutical literature. At a time when modern pharmaceutical resources in Greek were scarce, Photeinos sought to address this gap by creating a comprehensive pharmacopoeia that extensively drew from the Austrian Pharmacopoeia, as well as French and Latin sources. Although he initiated the project around 1804, political upheavals delayed its completion by more than three decades. Sp

Dr Mehmet Esat (Işık) Pasha and his contributions to ophthalmology.

Dr Mehmet Esat (Işık) Pasha (general) was one of the leading military physicians and politicians of the Ottoman Empire who made innovations in the field of ophthalmology. Dr Esat, who specialised in ophthalmology during his medical education in Istanbul and Paris, first made his name with his double-mirror ophthalmoscope, 'Ophtalmoscope Essad', which he designed and developed himself. In addition to his scientific studies, the international scientific congresses he attended as a delegate and the innovations he brought to the field of ophthalmology, he established the first modern eye clinic an

On the history of modern tonsillectomy: the contribution of Nikolaos Taptas.

The earliest reports on removal of the entire tonsil using a method of careful dissection came in the early 1900 s by American and British otorhinolaryngologists. These descriptions are credited as the first of the so-called modern tonsillectomy. In this report we present a technique of tonsillectomy conceived by Nikolaos Taptas, a Greek physician and citizen of the Ottoman Empire, which was introduced at the same period with the ones previously mentioned. Taptas practiced his technique in the very early 1900 s. He used his own instruments and reported excellent post-operative results with ver
