The inhibition of imitative and overlearned responses: a functional double dissociation.

Neuropsychological research has established that the inhibition of dominant response tendencies is a function of the prefrontal cortex. These inhibitory mechanisms are tested using tasks like the Stroop task, in which the prepotency of the dominant response is based on a learned relationship of stimulus and response. However, it has also been reported that patients with prefrontal lesions may have problems inhibiting imitative responses. The question arises of whether the inhibition of overlearned and imitative responses entails the same or different functional mechanisms and cortical networks

Recall of overlearned speech in noise: Developmental ERP findings and an episodic buffer frame for culturally situated brain activity.

How does extensively practiced speech memory remain dependent on momentary sensory input, and how does this interaction shape brain activity during development? This perspective integrates exploratory behavioral and event-related potential (ERP) findings from a culturally situated spoken-sequence recognition paradigm with a working memory episodic-buffer account. We reanalyzed data from children and young adults who had memorized Quranic passages despite limited Arabic comprehension. Participants heard incomplete passages with or without static noise and selected the missing final word from ph

Intensive practice of a cognitive task is associated with enhanced functional integration in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence that the frequently reported working memory impairments in schizophrenia might be partly due to an alteration in the functional connectivity between task-relevant areas. However, little is known about the functional connectivity patterns in schizophrenia patients during learning processes. In a previous study, Koch et al. [Neuroscience (2007) 146, 1474-1483] have demonstrated stronger exponential activation decreases in schizophrenia patients during overlearning of short-term memory material. The question arises whether these differential temporal patte

Prognosis prediction of patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma using conditional variational autoencoder on 3D PET images and clinical data.

BACKGROUND: Deep learning (DL) has been widely used for diagnosis and prognosis prediction of numerous frequently occurring diseases. Generally, DL models require large datasets to perform accurate and reliable prognosis prediction and avoid overlearning. However, prognosis prediction of rare diseases is still limited owing to the small number of cases, resulting in small datasets. PURPOSE: This paper proposes a multimodal DL method to predict the prognosis of patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) with a small number of 3D positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET/CT)

A simple and effective treatment for stuttering: speech practice without audience.

On the assumption that stuttering is essentially acquired behavior, it has been concluded that speech-related anticipatory anxiety as a major cause of stuttering accounts for virtually all apparently-different aspects of stuttering on the behavioral level. Stutterers' linguistic competence is unimpaired, although their speech production is characterized as "disfluent". Yet, such disfluency is dramatically reduced when such people speak in anxiety-free no-audience conditions. Furthermore, our pilot study of oral reading in Japanese indicates that a stutterer can easily replace stuttering events

Sensory attenuation scales with the strength of action-outcome coupling: A psychophysical study.

Sensory attenuation refers to the reduced neural or perceptual responses elicited by self-generated stimuli relative to externally generated ones. Yet behavioral findings remain inconsistent. These inconsistencies may reflect the widely differing operationalizations of the strength of the action-outcome coupling (SAOC), that is, how reliably an action predicts its sensory consequence. The present study systematically examined how four factors related to the SAOC influence perceptual sound attenuation. Participants performed an auditory discrimination task in which test tones of varying intensi

Raclopride-induced motor consolidation impairment in primates: role of the dopamine type-2 receptor in movement chunking into integrated sequences.

Results obtained in patients with schizophrenia have shown that antipsychotic drugs may induce motor learning deficits correlated with the striatal type-2 dopamine receptors (D(2)R) occupancy. Other findings suggest that the role of the striatum in motor learning could be related to a process of "chunking" discrete movements into motor sequences. We therefore hypothesized that a D(2)R blocking substance, such as raclopride, would affect motor learning by specifically disrupting the grouping of movements into sequences. Two monkeys were first trained to perform a baseline-overlearned sequence (

Long-term Learning Induces Plastic Changes in Frontostriatal Circuits.

Neural activity in frontal-striatal circuits underlies reinforcement learning. Traditional theories suggest that reinforcement signals, which drive learning, strengthen connections within the basal ganglia. This strengthening is believed to shift information processing from cortical regions to subcortical regions as learning becomes established over time. To examine this hypothesis, we trained macaques to associate multiple sets of images with their values. Selecting different images led to either an increase (+2, +1) or a decrease (-1, -2) in the number of tokens, which subsequently determine

NO-FEAR Airlines: A Computer-aided Self-help Treatment for Flying Phobia.

In vivo exposure is the treatment of choice for specific phobias. However, this treatment is linked to a number of limitations in its implementation. Therefore, it is important to develop strategies for improving treatment adherence, acceptance, and dissemination of evidence-based treatments. Information and Communication Technologies, specifically, computerized programs boast advantages in treating flying phobia. NO-FEAR Airlines is a Computer-aided Self-help Treatment for this problem, which can be self-applied via Internet. NO-FEAR Airlines treatment protocol comprises three therapeutic com

[Discrimination reversal learning in rats under the treatment of chlordiazepoxide: effect of overtraining].

A total of 48 rats were run in a black-white discrimination (original) learning task to the learning criterion of 18/20 correct responses. Correct responses were rewarded by food and a non-correction method was used. One group was intraperitoneally injected with 15 mg/kg of chlordiazepoxide (CDP) and the other with physiological saline (SAL), 30 min prior to the beginning of the daily trials. For half of the rats (NOT) of each group, reversal learning began on the next day after reaching the criterion, and for the other half (OT), 100 additional trials(overtraining) were given before the rever

Tics as a model of over-learned behavior-imitation and inhibition of facial tics.

BACKGROUND: Tics are the defining feature in Tourette syndrome and can be triggered by watching tics or single voluntary movements. This automatic imitation of movements referred to as "echopraxia" has been ascribed to a failure in top-down inhibition of imitative response tendencies. Alternatively, it could be interpreted in the context of automatic overlearned behavior. To this end, we investigated 18 Tourette patients aged 28.22 years (9.44 standard deviation; 16 male) and 24 healthy controls (mean age 29.21 years [9.1 standard deviation]; 17 male) using an adapted version of an action-inte

Increasing the naming speed of poor readers: representations formed across repetitions.

In three experiments we examined the effect of repetition practice on the acquisition, retention, and generalization of children's skill in rapidly naming visually presented words. Experiment 1 showed that naming times decrease rapidly with practice. Retention of this newly acquired skill in rapid naming was a function of the degree of learning during training. "Overlearning" was necessary to prevent forgetting of the skill. Experiment 2 indicated that the rate at which the naming gains were acquired, and the amount of forgetting, was unrelated to the specific orthographic to phonological corr

Brain activity correlates differentially with increasing temporal complexity of rhythms during initialisation, synchronisation, and continuation phases of paced finger tapping.

Activity in parts of the human motor system has been shown to correlate with the complexity of performed motor sequences in terms of the number of limbs moved, number of movements, and number of trajectories. Here, we searched for activity correlating with temporal complexity, in terms of the number of different intervals produced in the sequence, using an overlearned tapping task. Our task was divided into three phases: movement selection and initiation (initiate), synchronisation of finger tapping with an external auditory cue (synchronise), and continued tapping in absence of the auditory p

Finding a home for post-traumatic stress disorder in biological psychiatry. Is it a disorder of anxiety, mood, stress, or memory?

The collection of articles in this issue constitutes the most thorough review of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) yet. At this point, the accumulated phenomenological, epidemiological, biological, and treatment evidence make it crystal clear that PTSD stands alone as a unique psychiatric disorder. It is not the same as depression, although many PTSD patients are also depressed, and it is not the same as the other anxiety disorders, although PTSD patients frequently also suffer with panic attacks, social avoidance, and obsessive ruminations.

Simultaneous bilateral thalamic hemorrhages following the administration of intravenous tissue plasminogen activator.

A patient suffered the onset of simultaneous bilateral thalamic hemorrhage several hours after the administration of intravenous tissue plasminogen activator. The patient exhibited features of the paramedian diencephalic syndrome, including executive dysfunction, anterograde amnesia, inattention, and disturbances of visual perception. During rehabilitation, she made significant gains in overlearned activities of daily living tasks, but her inability to retain new information left her severely disabled. The use of intravenous thrombolytic therapy is believed to account for this patient's unusua

[Cognitive advantage in atypical development: enhanced procedural learning in Tourette syndrome].

Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by motor and vocal tics and by alterations in the cortico-basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical (CBGTC) circuitry. The CBGTC circuitry plays an important role in procedural learning, in the acquisition of skills and habits. Tics and habits are similar phenomenologically since tics can be described as overlearned habits. Based on these characteristics, prior studies proposed enhanced pro - ce dural learning, i.e., procedural hyperfunctioning in Tourette syndrome. A growing body of evidence supports this notion. The focus of the p

How do selected arrows guide visuospatial attention? Dissociating symbolic value and spatial proximity.

Previous research on the control of visuospatial attention showed that overlearned symbols like arrows have the potential to induce involuntary shifts of attention. Following work on the role of attentional control settings and of the content of working memory in the involuntary deployment of visuospatial attention, Pratt and Hommel (2003) found that this unintentional orienting by an arrow depended on its top-down selection, contingent on the attentional control settings, that is to say, the target selection cue. However, in this study, each arrow was closer to the location it indicated than

Faux pas detection and intentional action in Asperger Syndrome. A replication on a French sample.

In the present study, we investigated mind reading abilities in a group of adults with Asperger Syndrome (AS) by using the faux pas task, an advanced test of theory of mind (Baron-Cohen et al. (1999). Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 29, 407-418). The faux pas is a particular case of a non-intentional action reflecting an involuntary socially inappropriate behavior. Here, individuals with AS over-detected faux pas stories, failed to provide correct justifications of the speaker's behavior and were unaware of the mistaken belief and of the resulting emotional impact, whereas they

Human neuronal excitation/inhibition balance explains and predicts neurostimulation induced learning benefits.

Previous research has highlighted the role of the excitation/inhibition (E/I) ratio for typical and atypical development, mental health, cognition, and learning. Other research has highlighted the benefits of high-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS)-an excitatory form of neurostimulation-on learning. We examined the E/I as a potential mechanism and studied whether tRNS effect on learning depends on E/I as measured by the aperiodic exponent as its putative marker. In addition to manipulating E/I using tRNS, we also manipulated the level of learning (learning/overlearning) tha
