Mosquito Oviposition Behavior and Vector Control.

The burden of gene transfer from one mosquito generation to the next falls on the female and her eggs. The selection of an oviposition site that guarantees egg and larval survival is a critical step in the reproductive process. The dangers associated with ephemeral aquatic habitats, lengthy droughts, freezing winters, and the absence of larval nutrition makes careful oviposition site selection by a female mosquito extremely important. Mosquito species exhibit a remarkable diversity of oviposition behaviors that ensure eggs are deposited into microenvironments conducive for successful larval de

Herbicide Stress Inducesbeetle Oviposition on Red Maples.

Flatheaded borers (FHB; Chrysobothris spp.), are woodboring-beetles that lay their eggs in the bark and cambium of deciduous trees in North America. Females often target stressed host-plants for oviposition. The reason why is unknown; however, stressed plants often suffer various induced phytochemical changes that may enhance larval infestation success depending on the stressor such as induced upregulation of defenses, reallocation of nutrients, and changes to volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. To understand attraction of FHB to specific stress-induced changes, we analyzed phytochemica

Carbon dioxide drives oviposition in Helicoverpa armigera.

The levels of carbon dioxide (CO2), a powerful greenhouse gas, have risen dramatically over the past century, leading to widespread ecological effects on plants and animals alike, including insects that serve vital roles in many food webs. Elevated atmospheric CO2 is anticipated to affect insect biodiversity by influencing essential behaviors, although the mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that female Helicoverpa armigera use plant-emitted CO2 as a primary cue for egg-laying, showing a preference for younger leaves with higher CO2 gradients to enhance offspring survival

Measuring Oviposition Preference in Aedes aegypti Mosquitoes.

The female mosquito is endowed with the responsibility of gene transfer from one generation to another through careful delivery of her eggs to an appropriate environment. To guarantee a successful reproduction process, female mosquitoes use an evaluative approach to select an oviposition site that will ensure that their progeny successfully hatch and develop from larvae to pupa to adult. Specific conditions must be met during oviposition site selection before gravid females deposit eggs, including but not limited to appropriate temperature, salinity, and pH; the presence of nutrition; and a lo

Habitat availability mediates chironomid density-dependent oviposition.

Knowledge of density-dependent processes and how they are mediated by environmental factors is critically important for understanding population and community ecology of insects, as well as for mitigating harmful insect-borne diseases. Here, we tested whether the oviposition of chironomids (Diptera: Chironomidae; non-biting midges), known to carry the Cholera pathogen Vibrio cholerae, is density dependent and if it is mediated by habitat availability. We used two multiple choice experiments in habitat-limited and habitat-unlimited environments and performed isodar analysis on counts of egg bat

The influence of 2-propanol and acetone on oviposition rate and oviposition site preference for acetic acid and ethanol of Drosophila melanogaster.

Drosophila melanogaster strains, homozygous for the alcohol dehydrogenase alleles AdhF, AdhS, and Adhn4 respectively, were tested for oviposition site preference with a Multiple Choice Device consisting of 18 patches per choice disk. Equal numbers of patches with ethanol-, acetic acid-, and water-supplemented medium were offered simultaneously. Patches with acetic acid-supplemented medium were chosen predominantly as oviposition sites. Pretreatment of flies with increasing concentrations of 2-propanol to inhibit alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity resulted not only in a decreasing choice of a

Obstacle negotiation in female desert locust oviposition digging.

The female locust lays its eggs deep within soft substrate to protect them from predators and provide optimal conditions for successful development and hatching. During oviposition digging, the female's abdomen is pooled and extends into the ground, guided by a dedicated excavation mechanism at its tip, comprising two pairs of specialized digging valves. Little is known about how these active valves negotiate the various obstacles encountered on their path. In this study, female locusts oviposited their eggs in specialized sand-filled tubes with pre-inserted 3D-printed plastic obstacles. The s

Geosmin Attracts Aedes aegypti Mosquitoes to Oviposition Sites.

Geosmin is one of the most recognizable and common microbial smells on the planet. Some insects, like mosquitoes, require microbial-rich environments for their progeny, whereas for other insects such microbes may prove dangerous. In the vinegar fly Drosophila melanogaster, geosmin is decoded in a remarkably precise fashion and induces aversion, presumably signaling the presence of harmful microbes [1]. We have here investigated the effect of geosmin on the behavior of the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti. In contrast to flies, geosmin is not aversive but mediates egg-laying site selection.

Appendiceal schistosomiasis. Method of classifying oviposition and inflammation.

Twenty surgical specimens of appendiceal schistosomiasis were reviewed retrospectively. They constituted 1 percent of 1984 appendices seen among approximately 15,000 surgical specimens examined at free central laboratories serving the Igbos of Nigeria, West Africa. Oviposition by Schistosoma haematobium was classified according to its association with suppurative appendicitis and normal appendices. Seven of ten infested appendices obtained at curative operations showed suppurative appendicitis, whereas eight of nine infested appendices removed at incidental appendectomies were negative. One in

[Oviposition and dispersion of Aedes aegypti in an urban environment].

It is generally accepted that female Aedes aegypti do not fly more than 50-100 m in their entire lifetime, yet the rapidity with which this species colonizes new areas, and the explosive nature of dengue and yellow fever epidemics appear to contradict this. Using molecular methods, we have confirmed that the Ae. aegypti females lay small numbers of eggs at many sites. The distribution of available sites implies that the female may fly a considerable distance to deposit her whole egg batch. We developed a method of monitor dispersal during oviposition by labelling the eggs of the mosquito with

An oviposition pheromone, hexadecanoic acid, found on the eggs of Phlebotomus papatasi from Central Tunisia, attracts gravid females and stimulates oviposition.

Phlebotomus papatasi is a vector of Leishmania major, the etiologic agent of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis, a disfiguring and debilitating disease. In this study, we identified fatty acids found on the exterior of eggs laid by female P. papatasi that could be potential oviposition pheromones. We tested the effect of different treatments on 1) the number of eggs laid and 2) the spatial distribution of eggs laid. The treatments included three quantities of eggs (80, 160 and 320), hexane extracts of 160 eggs, 160 eggs after being washed with hexane to remove any pheromones, and three concentra

Female oviposition decisions are influenced by the microbial environment.

In ovipositing animals, egg placement decisions can be key determinants of offspring survival. One oviposition strategy reported across taxa is laying eggs in clusters. In some species, mothers provision eggs with diffusible defence compounds, such as antimicrobials, raising the possibility of public good benefits arising from egg clustering. Here we report that Drosophila melanogaster females frequently lay eggs in mixed-maternity clusters. We tested two hypotheses for potential drivers of this oviposition behaviour: (i) the microbial environment affects fecundity and egg placement in groups

Nitrergic modulation of an oviposition digging rhythm in locusts.

In locusts, a central pattern generator underlies the rhythmic movements of the ovipositor valves that serve to drive the abdomen into damp soil in order to lay eggs. We have investigated the role of nitric oxide (NO) in the control of this oviposition digging rhythm. NO increases the frequency of the rhythm by acting via sGC to elevate cGMP, which in turn acts via PKG. Increasing exogenous NO levels using the NO donors SNAP and PAPANONOate increased the cycle frequency of the fictive digging rhythm, as did increasing endogenous NO by bath application of the substrate for NOS, l-arginine. Effect of the combined application of microencapsulated synthetic oviposition pheromone (MSP) with different larvicidal agents on the oviposition of Culex pipiens biotype molestus.

BACKGROUND: Attract-and-kill strategies, in which a behavior-modifying stimulus (e.g. a pheromone) is integrated with a pest control agent, have lately attracted increased interest for mosquito control. Previously, it was demonstrated that the polyurea microencapsulated synthetic oviposition pheromone 6-acetoxy-5-hexadecanolide (MSP) was sufficiently attractive to gravid females of Culex pipiens L. biotype molestus Førskal (Diptera: Culicidae) for a period of 40 days. Furthermore, it was shown that MSP could be effectively combined with the organophosphate temephos to achieve efficient mosquit

Microclimate-based oviposition site selection in butterflies and moths.

The sites herbivorous insects select to deposit eggs determine to a variable degree the environment their larvae will experience during development. Therefore, oviposition site selection should be seen as a significant life-history trait affecting the survival of the offspring. While searching for suitable sites, egg-laying terrestrial insects are predicted to respond to environmental factors that function as indicators for larval development and survival. In herbivorous insects, such as butterflies and moths, microclimate may be of significance for the selection of a suitable host plant or sp

Temperature-Dependent Oviposition Models for Monochamus saltuarius (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae).

Monochamus saltuarius Gebler is a serious insect pest in Europe and East Asia regions, including Portugal, Spain, China, Japan, and Korea. It transfers the pine wood nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus to conifer trees, resulting in pine wilt disease (PWD). As temperature is a key factor influencing insect population dynamics, temperature-dependent models describing M. saltuarius oviposition could estimate population growth potential and evaluate outbreak risks. In this study, the longevity and fecundity of M. saltuarius females were measured under constant temperature conditions ranging from

Parallel Mechanosensory Pathways Direct Oviposition Decision-Making in Drosophila.

Female Drosophila choose their sites for oviposition with deliberation. Female flies employ sensitive chemosensory systems to evaluate chemical cues for egg-laying substrates, but how they determine the physical quality of an oviposition patch remains largely unexplored. Here we report that flies evaluate the stiffness of the substrate surface using sensory structures on their appendages. The TRPV family channel Nanchung is required for the detection of all stiffness ranges tested, whereas two other proteins, Inactive and DmPiezo, interact with Nanchung to sense certain spectral ranges of subs

Oviposition behaviour of Phlebotomus argentipes--a laboratory-based study.

The breeding habitat of sandflies is a little studied and poorly understood phenomenon. More importantly, oviposition behaviour is a largely neglected aspect of sandfly biology and this knowledge gap further undermines our understanding of the biology of sandflies. Pheromones released by the eggs play an important role in identifying good sites for oviposition by female insects. Several recent studies have examined the oviposition pheromone. The present study provides a preliminary report on the oviposition behaviour of Phlebotomus argentipes, the only vector of kala-azar (or visceral leishman
