The cutaneous bacterium Janthinobacterium lividum inhibits the growth of Trichophyton rubrum in vitro.

BACKGROUND: Tinea pedis (athlete's foot) is a fungal infection that is both widespread and challenging to treat. Standard treatments consist of topical and systemic therapies of antifungal agents, such as miconazole, itraconazole, and terbinafine. The extended nature of topical therapy and the toxicity of long-term systemic therapy limit the utility of current treatments. An alternate approach relies on an understanding of bacterial-fungal interactions. Specifically, a probiotic antifungal bacterium such as Janthinobacterium lividum can counter infection; Janthinobacterium is a major constitue

Correlations between gut microbiota and lichen planus: a two-sample Mendelian randomization study.

PURPOSE: Several existing studies have revealed that the occurrence of lichen planus (LP) is relevant to the gut microbiota, and the causal relationship between gut microbiota and LP was analyzed using the Mendelian randomization (MR) method. METHODS: Through the two-sample MR method, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) relevant to gut microbiota were selected as instrument variables (IVs) to evaluate the causal association between gut microbiota and the risk of LP. RESULTS: According to the selection criteria of inverse-variance weighted (IVW), six bacterial genera were found to be signi

Gelidimonas denitrificans gen. nov., sp. nov., and Gelidimonas diazotrophica sp. nov. psychrophilic bacteria involved in the nitrogen cycle in tundra soils of South Spitsbergen.

Two Gram-negative, psychrophilic, denitrifying bacterial strains, D2 and D11, were isolated from ornithogenic soil collected at a breeding colony of the marine bird Alle alle on Spitsbergen Island, Svalbard (Norway; High Arctic). Complete genome sequencing revealed that each strain possesses a single circular chromosome (3.83 Mbp and 3.63 Mbp, respectively) with similar GC content (55.3% and 55.5%), as well as plasmids - one shared by both strains (26.3 kb) and one unique to strain D11 (16.3 kb). Despite their striking genetic similarity, the two strains exhibit distinct physiological characte

A large-scale causal analysis of gut microbiota and delirium: A Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have linked gut microbiota to human brain activity. This study used Mendelian randomization (MR) to investigate the causal relationship between gut microbes and delirium. METHODS: MR was used to select SNPs from large-scale GWAS summary data on 211 gut microbiota taxa and delirium. Inverse variance weighting (IVW), weighted median, and MR-Egger methods were used for statistical analyses. Outliers were assessed using the leave-one-out method. To avoid horizontal pleiotropy, we performed the MR-PRESSO and MR-Egger intercept tests. Cochran's Q and I2 values for IVW an

Host nutrition-based approach for biotechnological production of the antifungal cyclic lipopeptide jagaricin.

In today's, society multi-resistant pathogens have become an emerging threat, which makes the search for novel anti-infectives more urgent than ever. A promising class of substances are cyclic lipopeptides like the antifungal jagaricin. Jagaricin is formed by the bacterial mushroom pathogen Janthinobacterium agaricidamnosum. It has shown antifungal activity against human pathogenic fungi like Candida albicans and Aspergillus fumigatus. In addition, jagaricin is nearly non-toxic for plants, which makes it a promising agent for agricultural applications. Cyclic lipopeptides formed by microorgani

Gut Microbiota Influences Meningioma Pathogenesis via Circulating Metabolites: A Two-Sample Mendelian Randomization Study.

BACKGROUND: Meningiomas are common solitary intracranial tumors without any apparent risk factors. In light of the growing interest in gut microbiome-brain tumor interactions, this investigation sought to explore potential links between intestinal microbial communities and meningioma pathogenesis, while also exploring the potential mediating role of specific metabolites. METHODS: To investigate potential causal links between intestinal microbial communities and meningioma development, we implemented a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach examining 196 microbial taxa.

Decoding Collimonas pratensis PMB3(1) responses during biotite interaction and dissolution: a multi-omics and geochemical perspective.

Mineral weathering bacteria are known to mobilize the nutrients entrapped in minerals using acidification- and chelation-driven mineral weathering (MWe) mechanisms. Through these mechanisms, bacteria are expected to play important roles in soil nutrient cycling and tree nutrition. Among the most effective MWe bacteria identified, Collimonas are particularly interesting due to their occurrence in the rhizosphere and their ability to acidify their environment using a glucose methanol choline oxidoreductase and to mobilize iron using malleobactin. Until now, the regulations of these functions acc

Ammonium removal pathways and microbial community in GAC-sand dual media filter in drinking water treatment.

A GAC-sand dual media filter (GSF) was devised as an alternative solution for drinking water treatment plant to tackle the raw water polluted by ammonium in place of expensive ozone-GAC processes or bio-pretreatments. The ammonium removal pathways and microbial community in the GSFs were investigated. The concentrations of ammonium, nitrite and nitrate nitrogen were monitored along the filter. Total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) loss occurred during the filtration. For 1 mg ammonium removal, the TIN loss was as high as 0.35 mg, DO consumption was 3.06 mg, and alkalinity consumption was 5.55 mg. Endometrial microbiota is more diverse in people with endometriosis than symptomatic controls.

Endometriosis is a chronic, estrogen-dependent gynecological condition affecting approximately 10% of reproductive age women. The most widely accepted theory of its etiology includes retrograde menstruation. Recent reports suggest the uterus is not sterile. Thus, the refluxed menstrual effluent may carry bacteria, and contribute to inflammation, the establishment and growth of endometriotic lesions. Here, we compared and contrasted uterine bacteria (endometrial microbiota) in people with surgically confirmed presence (N = 12) or absence of endometriosis (N = 9) using next-generation 16S rRNA g

Isolation and identification of culturable bacteria, capable of heterotrophic growth, from rapid sand filters of drinking water treatment plants.

The microbial community in sand filters (SFs) of drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) likely contributes to SF functionalities, such as organic carbon removal through heterotrophic metabolism. However, the dynamics and functionality of the SF microbiome and microbial communities in oligotrophic freshwater environments in general, are poorly understood. Therefore, the availability of bacterial strains from these oligotrophic environments is of great interest, but such organisms are currently underrepresented in culture collections. Focusing on heterotrophic carbon metabolism, bacteria were i

Tissue Microbiome Profiling Identifies an Enrichment of Specific Enteric Bacteria in Opisthorchis viverrini Associated Cholangiocarcinoma.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is the primary cancer of the bile duct system. The role of bile duct tissue microbiomes in CCA tumorigenesis is unestablished. To address this, sixty primary CCA tumors and matched normals, from both liver fluke (Opisthorchis viverrini) associated (OVa, n=28) and non-O. viverrini associated (non-OVa, n=32) cancers, were profiled using high-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing. A distinct, tissue-specific microbiome dominated by the bacterial families Dietziaceae, Pseudomonadaceae and Oxalobacteraceae was observed in bile duct tissues. Systemic perturbation of the microbiome

Bacterial assemblages imply methylmercury production at the rice-soil system.

The plant microbiota can affect plant health and fitness by promoting methylmercury (MeHg) production in paddy soil. Although most well-known mercury (Hg) methylators are observed in the soil, it remains unclear how rice rhizosphere assemblages alter MeHg production. Here, we used network analyses of microbial diversity to identify bulk soil (BS), rhizosphere (RS) and root bacterial networks during rice development at Hg gradients. Hg gradients greatly impacted the niche-sharing of taxa significantly relating to MeHg/THg, while plant development had little effect. In RS networks, Hg gradients

Selenium- and chitosan-modified biochars reduce methylmercury contents in rice seeds with recruiting Bacillus to inhibit methylmercury production.

Biochar could reshape microbial communities, thereby altering methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in rice rhizosphere and seeds. However, it remains unclear whether and how biochar amendment perturbs microbe-mediated MeHg production in mercury (Hg) contaminated paddy soil. Here, we used pinecone-derived biochar and its six modified biochars to reveal the disturbance. Results showed that selenium- and chitosan-modified biochar significantly reduced MeHg concentrations in the rhizosphere by 85.83% and 63.90%, thereby decreasing MeHg contents in seeds by 86.37% and 75.50%. The two modified bicoha

Causal relationships between Burkholderiales, Eubacteriaceae and colorectal cancer mediated by plasma metabolites.

While Burkholderiales and Eubacteriaceae are associated with colorectal cancer, a causal relationship has not yet been fully established. This study aimed to assess their causal effects and associated plasma metabolites on colorectal cancer. Summary statistics from genome-wide association studies were analyzed for gut microbiota (n=7738), 1400 plasma metabolites (n=8299), and colorectal cancer (n=321040). Genetic correlations were estimated using linkage disequilibrium score regression. Causal relationships were assessed using Mendelian randomization. Furthermore, a two-step mediation analysis
