Acne vulgaris is a common dermatological disorder with a multifactorial pathogenesis. Oxidative status has been implicated in the pathogenesis of several skin diseases, including acne. This study was aimed to investigate the levels of oxidative stress biomarkers in acne vulgaris patients with varying severities. The study involved 156 patients with acne and 46 healthy human controls. Based on clinical examination, patients were grouped into 3 subgroups as follows: mild, moderate, and severe acne. Oxidative stress was examined by measuring plasma levels of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (

Oxidants play a major role in mediating a variety of human disorders. The sources of oxidants may vary. They can be released by activated inflammatory cells or derive from the environment (such as pollution or tobacco smoke). In addition to acute, usually reversible reactions, numerous pulmonary diseases are associated with long lasting oxidant stress (adult respiratory distress syndrome, drug induced lung lesions, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, asthma, emphysema, interstitial fibrosis). Therapeutic action aimed at increasing anti-oxidant defense mechanisms is still a clinical challen

Basic and clinical studies in the past decade suggest an involvement of oxygen-derived free radicals in some cardiovascular diseases including atherosclerosis and hypertension. In atherogenesis evidence indicates that low-density lipoprotein/cholesterol must be oxidized before it can be taken up by the monocytes/macrophages to form foam cells which contribute to the characteristic fatty streak. Free radicals are considered responsible for this oxidation. Population studies reveal that hypertensive patients generally have a lower intake of ascorbic acid and possibly other antioxidants. Chronic kidney disease is a worldwide public health problem that affects approximately 10% of the US adult population and is associated with a high prevalence of cardiovascular disease and high economic cost. Chronic renal insufficiency, once established, tends to progress to end-stage kidney disease, suggesting some common mechanisms for ultimately causing scarring and further nephron loss. This review defines the term reactive oxygen metabolites (ROM), or oxidants, and presents the available experimental evidence in support of the role of oxidants in diabetic and nondiabetic glomerular disea

Free radicals are involved in the formation of both atherosclerosis and thrombosis. Therefore, considerable interest has recently been aroused by their role in the development of ischemic cerebral injury. Experimental observations suggest that antioxidants could reduce cerebral arterial vasospasm, reduce infarct size and prevent the development of both atherosclerosis and thrombosis. However, clinical evidence for these beneficial effects is still lacking. Alcohol can act as an antioxidant and an oxidant, and its intake seems to exert both beneficial and untoward effects on stroke, depending o

Although a number of risk factors have been identified for breast cancer, mechanisms by which they increase risk of the disease are not clear. Breast cancer etiology could, in part, be related to oxidative stress. Recognized risk factors for breast cancer include a family history of the disease. BRCA1 is needed for post-transcriptional repair of oxidative damage, indicating that oxidative stress may be an important risk factor for women with a family history of the disease. Reproductive and hormonal factors that result in greater exposure to circulating estrogens also increase risk, and steroi

The possible influence of dietary antioxidants, especially vitamin C, on the increasing prevalence of asthma is explored. Vitamin C intake in the general population appears to correlate with asthma, suggesting that a diet low in vitamin C is a risk factor for asthma. Epidemiological studies show associations among oxidant exposure, respiratory infections, and asthma in children of smokers. Symptoms of ongoing asthma in adults appear to be increased by exposure to environmental oxidants and decreased by vitamin C supplementation. There is evidence that oxidants produced endogenously by overacti

Endotoxemia is used as a model of the adult respiratory distress syndrome in chronically instrumented awake sheep. The toxic effects of endotoxin may be mediated through inflammatory cells and the release of toxic oxidants. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) inhibits the in vivo effects of endotoxemia in chronically instrumented unanesthetized sheep. NAC also functions as a free radical scavenger in vitro. It is possible that the protective effects of pretreatment with NAC result from NAC's ability in vivo to protect against local oxidant injury.

The chemistry of oxidants and their precursors (oxidants*) plays a central role in outdoor environments but its importance in indoor air remains poorly understood. Ozone (O3) chemistry is important in some indoor environments and, until recently, ozone was thought to be the dominant oxidant indoors. There is now evidence that formation of the hydroxyl radical by photolysis of nitrous acid (HONO) and formaldehyde (HCHO) may be important indoors. In the past few years, high time-resolution measurements of oxidants* indoors have become more common and the importance of event-based release of oxid

Oxidants derived either from leukocytes in proliferative glomerulonephritis or from resident glomerular cells in nonproliferative glomerulonephritis have been shown to have several biological effects relevant to chronic kidney disease. These include the ability of oxidants to damage the glomerular basement membrane and directly induce proteinuria, effects that would lead to a fall in the glomerular filtration rate and account for the morphologic changes observed in chronic kidney disease. In experimental models, the role of oxidants has been shown in both proliferative glomerulonephritis (eg,

Polymers used in implantable devices, although relatively unreactive, may degrade in vivo through unknown mechanisms. For example, polyetherurethane elastomers used as cardiac pacemaker lead insulation have developed surface defects after implantation. This phenomenon, termed "environmental stress cracking," requires intimate contact between polymer and host phagocytic cells, suggesting that phagocyte-generated oxidants might be involved. Indeed, brief exposure of polyetherurethane to activated human neutrophils, hypochlorous acid, or peroxynitrite produces modifications of the polymer similar

Oxidant species such as superoxide radical (O.2-), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), hydroxyl radical (HO.), and lipid peroxides (LOOH) are becoming increasingly implicated in human disease. However, the question of whether such oxidants are a major cause of tissue injury in human disease or are merely produced during such injury has been difficult to answer because of inadequate experimental techniques, and possibly because of an overemphasis on lipid peroxidation as a mechanism of oxidant injury. Recent developments in methodology, in our understanding of the primary mechanism of oxidant toxicity to

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are byproducts of oxygen metabolism produced by virtually all organisms living in an oxic environment. ROS are also produced by phagocytic cells in response to microorganism invasion. These highly reactive molecules can damage cellular constituents (proteins, DNA, and lipids) and exhibit antimicrobial activities when present in sufficient amount. Consequently, microorganisms have evolved defense mechanisms to counteract ROS-induced oxidative damage. Leptospira are diderm bacteria form the Spirochaetes phylum. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are important causative factors of many lung diseases, for instance pulmonary emphysema, adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), lung fibrosis or rejection of transplanted lung. Moreover, recent data show that these molecules also play some physiological roles including signal transduction which regulates such important functions as cell growth and apoptosis. This review describes various cellular sources of ROS in the lung. Special attention was paid to neutrophils, eosinophils, alveolar macrophages and cells of alveolar epithelium. A possible contribution of

Exercise has been shown to increase indirect measures of lipid peroxidation. However, exercise and training appear to augment the body's anti-oxidant defence system. Whether this augmented defence system can keep up with the increase in lipid peroxidation with exercise is not known. Iron depletion is experienced by many athletes, especially female endurance athletes and adolescents, but iron deficiency anaemia is rare. Iron depletion could affect the ability to train and recover from strenuous exercise, but this has not been examined. There is a concern that female athletes, especially adolesc

- Premature infants are susceptible to oxidative stress that causes neonatal disease such as retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Oxidative stress is an imbalance between the production of pro-oxidants and the ability of the body to detoxify their harmful effects by antioxidants. The proliferative phase 2 ROP occurs at around 33rd postmenstrual week (pmw). The purpose of our study was to evaluate the pro-oxidant/antioxidant status in preterm infants at 33rd pmw. The study included 59 premature infants. ROP was classified according to the International Classification of Retinopathy of Prematurity.
