Cancer statistics for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander people, 2026.

BACKGROUND: Cancer statistics for Asian American and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) people are usually aggregated, masking substantial variation within this heterogeneous population. Herein, the American Cancer Society reports cancer incidence and survival for 8 Asian American and 3 NHPI ethnic groups. METHODS: The authors used population-based cancer registry data from the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program, for Asian American and NHPI ethnic groups from 2000 through 2022. RESULTS: During 2018-2022, overall cancer incidence ranged fr

The incidence of treated end-stage renal disease in New Zealand Maori and Pacific Island people and in Indigenous Australians.

BACKGROUND: Although Indigenous Australians, New Zealand Maori and Pacific Island people comprise an unduly high proportion of patients treated for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in the two countries, no population-based age- and disease-specific rates have been published. METHODS: From data provided to the Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry (ANZDATA), truncated age- and sex-standardized incidence rates were calculated for treated ESRD due to all causes and by primary renal disease, in four broad age groups of Maori, Pacific Island people and all 'other' New Zealanders

Characterizing sociodemographic disparities and predictors of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus among Asian and Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander pregnant people: an analysis of PRAMS data, 2016-2022.

BACKGROUND: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) affects between 2 and 10% of pregnancies in the United States, with trends of increasing prevalence and a significant amount of variability across race and ethnicity, maternal age, and insurance status. Asian and Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islanders (NHOPI) have been documented to have a higher prevalence and risk of developing GDM compared to non-Hispanic white populations and have been under-studied in health disparities research. METHODS: Using data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) 2016-2022 surveys, we condu

Comorbid substance use disorders with other Axis I and II mental disorders among treatment-seeking Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders, and mixed-race people.

Little is known about behavioral healthcare needs of Asian Americans (AAs), Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders (NHs/PIs), and mixed-race people (MRs)-the fastest growing segments of the U.S. population. We examined substance use disorder (SUD) prevalences and comorbidities among AAs, NHs/PIs, and MRs (N = 4572) in a behavioral health electronic health record database. DSM-IV diagnoses among patients aged 1-90 years who accessed behavioral healthcare from 11 sites were systematically captured: SUD, anxiety, mood, personality, adjustment, childhood-onset, cognitive/dementia, dissociative, eating

Invisibility as a structural determinant: Mortality outcomes of Asians and Pacific Islanders experiencing homelessness.

INTRODUCTION: Asians and Pacific Islanders (APIs) who are experiencing homelessness are situated in a social intersection that has rendered them unrecognized and therefore vulnerable. There has been increasing attention to racial disparities in homelessness, but research into API homelessness is exceedingly rare, despite rapidly growing populations. The purpose of this study is to examine the causes of death among APIs who died while homeless in Santa Clara County (SCC) and compare these causes to other racial groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report on data obtained from the SCC Medical Exam

The engagement of Indigenous populations in tuberculosis control - with a focus on contact tracing: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global public health concern that disproportionately affects Indigenous people. Contact tracing and early identification of those exposed to TB is essential for TB control. This study assesses the engagement of Indigenous populations for TB control against international and national TB guidelines. DESIGN: A scoping review was conducted using five databases: PubMed, EMBASE, Global Health, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) were used depending on the search engine and functionality. Key search terms included 'Tubercu

A strong role for the ABCG2 gene in susceptibility to gout in New Zealand Pacific Island and Caucasian, but not Māori, case and control sample sets.

Genetic variation in ABCG2 (rs2231142, Q141K), encoding a uric acid transporter, is associated with gout in diverse populations. The aim of this study was to examine a role for ABCG2 in gout susceptibility in New Zealand Māori, Pacific Island and Caucasian samples. Patients (n = 185, 173 and 214, for Māori, Pacific Island and Caucasian, respectively) satisfied the American College of Rheumatology gout classification criteria. The comparison samples comprised 284, 129 and 562 individuals, respectively, without gout. rs2231142 was genotyped and stratification accounted for using genomic control

Disease and development: ciguatera fish poisoning.

Ciguatera, a form of fish poisoning with a pantropical distribution, has been a recognized health problem in the Caribbean and the Pacific for centuries (in the decade from 1973 to 1983 for the island Pacific region as a whole, reported incidence, conservatively 20% of actual incidence, was 97/100,000). Island peoples in subsistence communities have developed strategies to minimize its impact. These strategies are less effective when people move to towns, cities and wage labor. The existence of ciguatoxic fish, which are indistinguishable from those that are not, has serious implications for d

Fixed 6° distal femoral cut consistently achieves neutral alignment for Asians, Caucasians, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders.

BACKGROUND: Restoration of a neutral mechanical axis (MA) is important to the success of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). While known differences are present between Asians and Caucasians regarding native knee alignment, it is unknown whether such differences exist amongst Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islanders (NHPI) or if utilizing a fixed distal femoral cut of 6° can consistently achieve a neutral MA in these minority racial groups. This study examines the preoperative deformities presented by Asians, Caucasians, and NHPI, and the resulting knee alignment achieved following TKA when a fixed

Heart failure management systems in the Western Pacific Region: A rapid scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) affects 64 million individuals globally and accounts for one quarter of non-communicable disease deaths in the Western Pacific Region (WPR). Indigenous populations, including Māori and Pacific Islander peoples, experience disproportionately higher HF morbidity and premature mortality. Evidence on HF management systems across Pacific Island Countries remains critically limited. OBJECTIVE: This rapid scoping review aimed to map and synthesise existing evidence on HF management systems across the WPR, including healthcare infrastructure, diagnostic and treatment mo

Myasthenia gravis with thymoma is more common in the Maori and Pacific Island populations in New Zealand.

BACKGROUND: The association of myasthenia gravis (MG) with thymoma is well recognized. Our clinical impression has been that MG associated with thymoma may be more common in patients of Polynesian descent than in other races. AIM: To determine the influence of ethnicity on the association of MG with thymoma in our population. METHOD: Review of all cases of thymectomy performed at Greenlane Hospital in Auckland for the 20-year period from June 1978 to June 1998. RESULTS: There were 103 thymectomies performed in the study period. Fifty-five thymomas were identified, 15 in subjects of Maori or

Pacific Islands Families Study: Serum Uric Acid in Pacific Youth and the Associations with Free-Sugar Intake and Appendicular Skeletal Muscle Mass.

BACKGROUND: Fructose (50% of sucrose/sugar) is one component of free-sugars and is metabolized to uric acid, which is a known risk factor for gout and metabolic syndrome. Pacific peoples in New Zealand experience a higher prevalence of gout, type 2 diabetes, and overweight/obesity than other ethnic groups. Interestingly, despite having a similar body mass index (BMI), they tend to have a higher proportion of appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASMM) and less fat than other ethnic groups. Given this context, this study aimed to evaluate the associations between serum uric acid (SUA), free-sugar
