Mercury in tunas and blue marlin in the North Pacific Ocean.

Models and data from the North Pacific Ocean indicate that mercury concentrations in water and biota are increasing in response to (global or hemispheric) anthropogenic mercury releases. In the present study, we provide an updated record of mercury in yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) caught near Hawaii that confirms an earlier conclusion that mercury concentrations in these fish are increasing at a rate similar to that observed in waters shallower than 1000 m. We also compiled and reanalyzed data from bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) and blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) caught near Hawaii in the

Temporal dynamics of Prochlorococcus ecotypes in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

To better understand the temporal and spatial dynamics of Prochlorococcus populations, and how these populations co-vary with the physical environment, we followed monthly changes in the abundance of five ecotypes-two high-light adapted and three low-light adapted-over a 5-year period in coordination with the Bermuda Atlantic Time Series (BATS) and Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOT) programs. Ecotype abundance displayed weak seasonal fluctuations at HOT and strong seasonal fluctuations at BATS. Furthermore, stable 'layered' depth distributions, where different Prochlorococcus ecotypes reached maxi

Persistent eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean upwelling since the warm Pliocene.

Upwelling generates a nutrient-rich "cold tongue" in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean (EEP), with impacts on global climate, oceanic biological productivity, and the carbon cycle. The cold tongue was reduced during the Pliocene Epoch, a feature attributed to weaker upwelling and an associated deepening of the surface mixed layer in the EEP. Here, we report nitrogen-isotope evidence that modern-like upwelling occurred in the EEP during the Pliocene and has persisted over the past 5 million years. We explain the reduced Pliocene cold tongue as an expression of the reduced temperature differe

Cinnarizine for Sea Sickness During a Remote Pacific Ocean Rescue Mission.

Motion sickness can be a limiting factor for sea and air missions. We report the experience of a Pararescue (PJ) team on a Pacific Ocean rescue mission in which motion sickness was prevalent. Cinnarizine, an antagonist of H1-histamine receptors, was used to treat affected PJs. We also report findings of a survey of PJs regarding motion sickness. A family of four on a disabled sailboat 900 miles off the coast of Mexico sent out a distress call because their 1-year-old daughter became severely ill with fever and diarrhea. Four PJs were deployed on a C-130, performed a free-fall parachute inserti

[Hysterothylacium petteri sp. n. (Nematoda: Ascaridata) from the Pacific Ocean swordfish].

Hysterothylacium petteri sp. n. was recovered from the stomach of Xiphias gladius occurring in the Kuroshio. The morphological difference of H. petteri from all other species of this genus is the extremely long ventricular caecum (two times more than pharynx). The species is very similar to H. corrugatum Deardorff et Overstreet, 1980 from swordfish off the American shores and corresponds to the description of Hysterothylacium sp. by Petter, Maillard, 1987. The third stage larvae of H. petteri sp. n. are probably those larval forms which were described as Contracaecum sp. l. Type IIA in Brunsdo

Comparison of Hygroscopicity, Volatility, and Mixing State of Submicrometer Particles between Cruises over the Arctic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.

Ship-borne measurements of ambient aerosols were conducted during an 11 937 km cruise over the Arctic Ocean (cruise 1) and the Pacific Ocean (cruise 2). A frequent nucleation event was observed during cruise 1 under marine influence, and the abundant organic matter resulting from the strong biological activity in the ocean could contribute to the formation of new particles and their growth to a detectable size. Concentrations of particle mass and black carbon increased with increasing continental influence from polluted areas. During cruise 1, multiple peaks of hygroscopic growth factor (HGF)

Neospora caninum Infection in Marine Mammals Stranding in Northeastern Pacific Ocean Region.

We used immunohistochemistry and PCR to identify Neospora caninum in 6 infected marine mammal species, including 2 pups, that stranded in the northeastern Pacific Ocean. Our findings suggest the expansion of this parasite's host range to marine mammals, underscoring the effect of terrestrial pathogens that flow from land to sea.

Siderophore-based microbial adaptations to iron scarcity across the eastern Pacific Ocean.

Nearly all iron dissolved in the ocean is complexed by strong organic ligands of unknown composition. The effect of ligand composition on microbial iron acquisition is poorly understood, but amendment experiments using model ligands show they can facilitate or impede iron uptake depending on their identity. Here we show that siderophores, organic compounds synthesized by microbes to facilitate iron uptake, are a dynamic component of the marine ligand pool in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. Siderophore concentrations in iron-deficient waters averaged 9 pM, up to fivefold higher than in iron

Oceanic Influences on Mud Crab (Scylla olivacea) Reproductive Traits: A Comparative Study Across the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

Scylla olivacea is a commercially important species in the Indo-Pacific region, currently facing growing pressures from anthropogenic stressors. This study compares populations from the Indian Ocean (Andaman Sea) and the Pacific Ocean (Gulf of Thailand) to assess how different oceanic region and seasonal conditions influence key reproductive traits. By examining parameters such as sex ratio, size at first maturity, fecundity, and gonadosomatic index (GSI), the study aims to identify the differences that can inform targeted and sustainable management strategies. Crab samples were collected mont

Machine Learning Reveals Microbial Taxa Associated with a Swim across the Pacific Ocean.

Purpose: This study aimed to characterize the association between microbial dynamics and excessive exercise. Methods: Swabbed fecal samples, body composition (percent body fat), and swimming logs were collected (n = 94) from a single individual over 107 days as he swam across the Pacific Ocean. The V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene was sequenced, generating 6.2 million amplicon sequence variants. Multivariate analysis was used to analyze the microbial community structure, and machine learning (random forest) was used to model the microbial dynamics over time using R statistical programming. Nutrient Transfer Hypothesis for the Fluctuation and Regional Variation of Microbial Diversity in the Pacific Ocean.

Microbial diversity affects marine biogeochemical cycles and sustainability. However, the processes and feedbacks that control the spatial and temporal trends in species diversity and functional gene diversity remain largely unknown at the global marine scale. We analysed 1582 marine metagenomic samples and 19 variables related to marine climate and microbial community dynamics. Over the past 12 years, marine microbial species diversity has significantly decreased across the surface ocean, especially in the Pacific. The greatest decrease reached 24.29% in the central region of the North Pacifi

Salmon lice in the Pacific Ocean show evidence of evolved resistance to parasiticide treatment.

Parasitic salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) threaten the economic and ecological sustainability of salmon farming, and their evolved resistance to treatment with emamectin benzoate (EMB) has been a major problem for salmon farming in the Atlantic Ocean. In contrast, the Pacific Ocean, where wild salmon are far more abundant, has not seen widespread evolution of EMB-resistant lice. Here, we use EMB bioassays and counts of lice on farms from the Broughton Archipelago, Canada-a core region of salmon farming in the Pacific-to show that EMB sensitivity has dramatically decreased since 2010, con

Surfacing and diving behavior associated with thermal physiology in oceanic habitats of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) in the western north Pacific Ocean.

INTRODUCTION: Thermal physiology is a pivotal biotic factor for the ecophysiology of commercially valuable tuna, influencing not only horizontal but also vertical behaviors. We aimed to examine how the thermal physiology of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis, SKJ) can explain the differences in their vertical behavior, focusing on surfacing and diving, among various thermal environments during their northward migration in the western North Pacific. METHODS: We analyzed archival tag data collected during 2012-2015, with individual time series (Fork length: 38-49 cm, N = 38) of swimming depth, w

A new potentially toxic species of Gambierdiscus (Gonyaulacales, Dinophyceae) from the Western Pacific Ocean.

Over the past four decades, at least twenty species of the benthic dinoflagellate genus Gambierdiscus have been described worldwide, with the highest diversity reported from the South Pacific. Species delimitation within this genus is often challenging due to subtle morphological differences, and reliable identification frequently requires molecular confirmation. In the present study, epiphytic dinoflagellates collected along the coast of Viet Nam were examined using an integrative approach combining morphology and molecular phylogenetics. A new, potentially toxic species, Gambierdiscus larsen

Two new blood flukes (Digenea: Sanguinicolidae) from Epinephelinae (Perciformes: Serranidae) of the Pacific Ocean.

Pearsonellum pygmaeus n. sp. is described from Cromileptes altivelis (Serranidae), the Barramundi Cod, from Heron Island (southern Great Barrier Reef) and Lizard Island (northern Great Barrier Reef). This new species differs from Pearsonellum corventum (type and only species) in the combination of smaller overall body size, the relative distance of the brain from the anterior end, the relative lengths of both the oesophagus and the testis, the degree to which the testis extends outside the intercaecal field, the shape of the testis, the shape and size of the ovary and the extent to which the u

Chromosome-level genome assembly of chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) from the Indo-Pacific Ocean.

Chub mackerels (Scomber japonicus) are a migratory marine fish widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific Ocean. They are globally consumed for their high Omega-3 content, but their population is declining due to global warming. Here, we generated the first chromosome-level genome assembly of chub mackerel (fScoJap1) using the Vertebrate Genomes Project assembly pipeline with PacBio HiFi genomic sequencing and Arima Hi-C chromosome contact data. The final assembly is 828.68 Mb with 24 chromosomes, nearly all containing telomeric repeats at their ends. We annotated 31,656 genes and discovered that

Mercury accumulation in hydrothermal vent mollusks from the southern Tonga Arc, southwestern Pacific Ocean.

We provide the mercury (Hg) and monomethylmercury (MMHg) levels of the plume water, sulfide ore, sediment, and mollusks located at the hydrothermal vent fields of the southern Tonga Arc, where active volcanism and intense seismic activity occur frequently. Our objectives were: (1) to address the potential release of Hg from hydrothermal fluids and (2) to examine the distribution of Hg and MMHg levels in hydrothermal mollusks (mussels and snails) harboring chemotrophic bacteria. While high concentrations of Hg in the sediment and Hg, As, and Sb in the sulfide ore indicates that their source is
