Our inability to measure pain effectively is a major barrier to progress in pain research and advancement in clinical interventions for pain. Historically, the mind-body dichotomy has constrained our thinking about pain and its quantification. One line of work has pursued pain as the sensory end product of nociception: pain is the realization of signals of tissue injury arriving at the cortex. At the other extreme, some clinicians contend that pain is ''what the patient says it is''. In other words, it is a purely mental and entirely subjective phenomenon. Research on functional brain imaging,

Research has focused on pain perception of individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder, but there is a lack of research regarding pain perception for other types of Personality Disorders. The present study explored associations between the perception of experimentally-induced acute pain of individuals without acute or chronic pain with Borderline, as well as Histrionic, and Schizotypal, Personality Disorders traits. The primary question of interest was whether any personality disorders were associated with altered pain perception. Fifty-two participants had pain induced by a cold-pressor

"Phantom limb" is a well-known phenomenon following loss or amputation of a limb. The limb still seems to be present, although it is no longer there, but the sensation is not associated with pain. Less well-known are the phenomena of autosomatognosis and pain after the loss of other parts of the body such as the genital parts or after partial or complete deafferentiations as in a traumatic transverse syndrome, lesion of the brachial plexus, or lesions of the CNS. Although many hypotheses have been advanced to explain the pathophysiological mechanisms resulting in these phenomena, the pathogene

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Acute pain is the most common reason for visits to the emergency department (ED). The underuse of analgesics occurs in a large proportion of ED patients. The physician's accurate assessment of patients' pain is a key element to improved pain management. The purpose of this study was to assess if physicians' perception of pain can improve with looking at the pain score of the patient marked on VAS.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a single-center, cross-sectional prospective observational study, that took place in an academic ED.
METHODS: All adult ED patients presenting with a pai

Childhood adversity has frequently been related to a wide range of psychosomatic complaints in adulthood. The present study examined the relationship between different forms of childhood adversity and laboratory measures of pain. Heat pain tolerance and perceived heat pain intensity were measured in a community-based sample of 62 women (aged 20-64 years). Participants completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), which assesses five forms of childhood adversity: physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical neglect, and emotional neglect. Somatic symptoms, depressive symptoms,

In the last 2 decades there have been substantial advances in our knowledge of the scientific basis of the mechanisms of pain. Nociceptors or pain receptors are widespread in the skin and tissues of animals; chemical mediation of nociceptor excitation may provide a key for understanding the peripheral phenomena related to pain. The expression of pain in animals involves multiple ascending and descending branches, as well as specialized pain-signaling mechanisms in the spinal cord. The importance of these different pathways varies with species and circumstances. Endogenous neural systems in the

Neuroanatomy and Pathophysiology of Pain Perception Abstract. Nociception, the possibility of our sensory nervous system to detect painful and therefore potentially harmful stimuli, is crucial for survival. In essence it serves as a "detect and protect" mechanism. For this reason, many features of this complex network, for example the nociceptors, are evolutionary highly preserved. To guarantee an adequate and fast response to prevent tissue damage, the information has to be processed in a fast and stable manner. To this account, the network is designed to be able to potentiate the information

In this review, we summarize the contribution of functional imaging to the question of nociception in humans. In the beginning of the 90's, brain areas supposed to be involved in physiological pain processes were almost exclusively the primary somatosensory area (SI), thalamus, and anterior cingulate cortex. In spite of these a priori hypotheses, the first imaging studies revealed that the main brain areas and those providing the most consistent activations in pain conditions were the insular and the SII cortices, bilaterally. This has been confirmed with other techniques such as intracerebral

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by chronic abdominal discomfort or pain in the absence of detectable organic disease. IBS is common and is associated with a significant impairment in health-related quality of life. Enhanced perception of visceral stimuli ("visceral hypersensitivity") appears to be an important pathophysiological mechanism. Early IBS studies using functional brain imaging techniques suggest an alteration in central pain modulation circuits, rather than an increased sensitivity of peripheral visceral pain pathways. The frequ

Starting from a case of marked pain insensitivity in a patient suffering from catatonic schizophrenia we state in this paper that analgesia seems to be an ubiquitous phenomenon which is not only caused by physical disorders of the central nervous system. Different models of interpretation as to be found in scientific literature are reviewed. On the basis of today's physiological knowledge, five hypotheses on causal explanation of pain insensitivity in schizophrenics are discussed: Hypalgesia and analgesia are an expression of motorial inability to react; a consequence of a disorder of consciou

The parabrachial (PB) complex mediates both ascending nociceptive signaling and descending pain modulatory information in the affective/emotional pain pathway. We have recently reported that chronic pain is associated with amplified activity of PB neurons in a rat model of neuropathic pain. Here we demonstrate that similar activity amplification occurs in mice, and that this is related to suppressed inhibition to lateral parabrachial (LPB) neurons from the CeA in animals of either sex. Animals with pain after chronic constriction injury of the infraorbital nerve (CCI-Pain) displayed higher spo

The Economy of action hypothesis postulates that bodily states rescale the perception of the individual's environment's spatial layout. The estimation of distances and slopes in navigation space (i.e. the space reachable by locomotion) is influenced by sensations relating to body condition and the metabolic cost of the actions. The results of the studies investigating the impact of pain on distance estimation remain inconclusive. 28 women suffering from chronic pain and fibromyalgia (FM), and 24 healthy women (HC) were assessed for musculoskeletal, neuropathic, and visceral pain by means of th

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate pain associated with laryngeal electromyography (LEMG).
STUDY DESIGN: A prospective case series.
METHODS: Adult patients scheduled for LEMG in a tertiary care laryngology practice were recruited between July 20, 2016, and March 1, 2017. Demographic and clinical data were extracted from the charts. Study participants reported their anticipated pain level using a visual analog scale (VAS) prior to the procedure. VAS was administered again within 10 minutes after the procedure, along with the validated McGill Pain Questionnaire, to gauge patient's pain perception after un

This review focuses on studies of pain threshold and tolerance in individuals with nonsuicidal self-injurious (NSSI) behavior. The data on methods of pain sensitivity studies are presented, with issues in animal modeling of NSSI discussed separately. The results of neuroimaging studies on pain sensitivity in individuals with NSSI are described, along with contribution of genetic factors, psychological variables, and disturbances in opioid and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal systems. A critical methodological analysis of the studies on pain sensitivity in individuals with NSSI was performed.

Animal studies have suggested that the cerebellum, in addition to its motor functions, also has a role in pain processing and modulation, possibly because of its extensive connections with the prefrontal cortex and with brainstem regions involved in descending pain control. Consistently, human imaging studies have shown cerebellar activation in response to painful stimulation. However, it is presently not clear whether cerebellar lesions affect pain perception in humans. In the present study, we used experimental pain testing to compare acute pain perception and endogenous pain inhibition in 3

Frogs possess pain receptors and pathways that support processing and perception of noxious stimuli however the level of organization is less well structured compared to mammals. It was long believed that the experience of pain was limited to 'higher' phylums of the animal kingdom. However, it is now commonly accepted that amphibians possess neuro-anatomical pathways conductive of a complete nociceptive experience. Xenopus laevis frogs have been one of the most popular aquatic research models for developmental studies and genetic research. These frogs have been extensively use in research for

Tension-type headache (TTH) is a disorder with high prevalence and significant impact on society. Understanding of pathophysiology of TTH is paramount for development of effective treatments and prevention of chronification of TTH. Our aim was to review the findings from pain perception studies of pathophysiology of TTH as well as to review the research of pathophysiology of TTH. Pain perception studies such as measurement of muscle tenderness, pain detection thresholds, pain tolerance thresholds, pain response to suprathreshold stimulation, temporal summation and diffuse noxious inhibitory co
