Endocrine factors of pair bonding.

Throughout literature--fiction and poetry, fine arts and music--falling in love and enjoying romantic love plays a central role. While several psychosocial conceptions of pair attachment consider the participation of hormones, human endocrinology has dealt with this theme only marginally. According to some authors in addictology, falling in love shows some signs of hormonal response to stressors with changes in dopamine and serotonin signalling and neurotrophin (transforming growth factor b) concentration. Endorphins, oxytocin and vasopressin may play a role during the later phases of love. Ho

The Evolutionary Psychopathology of Human Pair-Bonding.

Evolutionary psychiatry views biological systems as evolved functional adaptations shaped by selection to promote survival and reproductive success (Darwinian fitness). However, even functional systems can malfunction under certain conditions resulting in pathological and psychopathological states. We argue that the human mating system based on pair-bonding and biparental investment is a fundamental human, species-typical characteristic that is supported by a bundle of evolved psychological adaptations. Here we describe a framework for understanding the biological roots of a subsection of reco

[Neurobiology of pair-bonded sociality in prairie voles].

Our understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying social behavior has been advanced by research using mice and rats. Specifically, the dorsal hippocampal CA2 area, ventral hippocampal CA1 area, and nucleus accumbens have been identified as critical for social recognition, while the medial preoptic area serves as a central hub for parental behavior. However, these polygamous species are unsuitable for studying "pair bonding"-an enduring, selective preference for a specific mate. To address this, this review focuses on monogamous prairie voles. Pair bond formation requires neuromodulators-in

Hydrogen Bonding (Base Pairing) in Antiviral Activity.

Base pairing based on hydrogen bonding has, since its inception, been crucial in the antiviral activity of arabinosyladenine, 2'-deoxyuridines (i.e., IDU, TFT, BVDU), acyclic nucleoside analogues (i.e., acyclovir) and nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). Base pairing based on hydrogen bonding also plays a key role in the mechanism of action of various acyclic nucleoside phosphonates (ANPs) such as adefovir, tenofovir, cidofovir and O-DAPYs, thus explaining their activity against a wide array of DNA viruses (human hepatitis B virus (HBV), human immunodeficiency (HIV) and human h

κ-Opioid receptors within the nucleus accumbens shell mediate pair bond maintenance.

The prairie vole is a socially monogamous species in which breeder pairs typically show strong and selective pair bonds. The establishment of a pair bond is associated with a behavioral transition from general affiliation to aggressive rejection of novel conspecifics. This "selective aggression" is indicative of mate guarding that is necessary to maintain the initial pair bond. In the laboratory, the neurobiology of this behavior is studied using resident-intruder testing. Although it is well established that social behaviors in other species are mediated by endogenous opioid systems, opiate r

Biologic effects of stress and bonding in mother-infant pairs.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal stress in humans influences behavior of children and can be assessed using biological markers. Mothers and their one-month-old infants were recruited from an existing study to examine baseline maternal serum oxytocin and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis response to infant blood heel stick stress as measured by salivary cortisol in the dyads. Objectives were to explore (1) relationships between mother and infant cortisol levels, (2) gender differences in infant biologic cortisol response, and (3) the association of cortisol levels in the dyads and maternal oxytocin levels

Resonance of an unshared electron pair between two atoms connected by a single bond.

The reported structure of the dimer of a compound of bicovalent tin indicates that the tin-tin bond is of a new type. It can be described as involving resonance between two structures in which there is transfer of an electron pair from one tin atom to the other. The tin atoms are connected by a single covalent bond (each also forms two covalent bonds with carbon atoms), and an unshared electron pair resonates between the fourth sp(3) orbitals of the two atoms. Similar structures probably occur in digermene and distannene.

Multi-year pair-bonding in Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii).

Mating strategies in fishes are known to include polygyny, polyandry and monogamy and provide valuable insights regarding powerful evolutionary forces such as sexual selection. Monogamy is a complex of mating systems that has been relatively neglected. Previous work on mating strategies in fishes has often been based on observation and focused on marine species rather than freshwater fishes. SNPs are increasingly being used as a molecular ecology tool in non-model organisms, and methods of probabilistic genetic analysis of such datasets are becoming available for use in the absence of parental

The neurobiology of pair bonding: insights from a socially monogamous rodent.

The formation of enduring relationships between adult mates (i.e., pair bonds) is an integral aspect of human social behavior and has been implicated in both physical and psychological health. However, due to the inherent complexity of these bonds and the relative rarity with which they are formed in other mammalian species, we know surprisingly little about their underlying neurobiology. Over the past few decades, the prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster) has emerged as an animal model of pair bonding. Research in this socially monogamous rodent has provided valuable insight into the neurobiolo

C-H bond activations by the HO˙/(Salophent-Bu)Co(II) radical pair generated via homolysis of a terminal Co(III)-OH bond.

The reactive HO˙/(Salophent-Bu)Co(II) radical pair was observed to be generated via homolysis of the terminal Co(III)-OH bond in transient (Salophent-Bu)(L)Co(III)(OH) (L = Py, MeOH) complexes as indicated by UV-Vis and EPR measurements. Based on this elementary process, C-H bond activations in acetone, 2-butanone, acetonitrile and benzene were achieved under ambient conditions. For the reactions of the first three substrates, the alkylcobalt(III) complexes were formed as the products.

Volatile Compounds in Feathers of the Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) Reflect Sex and Pair-Bond Status.

Birds were traditionally considered to have a limited sense of smell; however, increasing evidence indicates that some taxa, including parrots, possess a functional olfactory system capable of detecting volatile compounds. These chemical cues may convey information related to identity, reproductive status, and mate quality. This study investigates the diversity of volatile compounds in the feathers of scarlet macaws (Ara macao) and examines whether their chemical composition varies according to sex, age, and pair-bond status, as well as whether plumage odor is associated with immune function.

Transcriptomic shifts in Microtus ochrogaster neurogenic niches reveal psychiatric-risk pathways engaged by pair-bond formation.

Pair bonding (PB) is a stable affiliative relationship that confers profound behavioral and physiological advantages. The prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster), one of the few socially monogamous mammals, provides a tractable model for dissecting the neurobiological substrates of social interactions. We previously showed that social co-habitation with mating (SCM) increases cell proliferation and neuronal differentiation in the subventricular zone (SVZ) and dentate gyrus (DG), implicating adult neurogenesis in bond formation. Here, we characterized the underlying molecular programs by bulk RNA-s

The effect of endoscopic sterilization on reproductive behavior and pair bond maintenance of feral pigeons (Columba livia).

OBJECTIVE: Problems related to feral pigeons (Columba livia) in cities mainly result from their large numbers due to uncontrolled population growth. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether endoscopic guided sterilization affects the reproductive behavior of feral pigeons under experimental conditions, with the intention of assessing this technique as a potential method for feral pigeon population control. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five groups of four pairs of feral pigeons each were studied from 8 weeks before, to 7 weeks after sterilization. Both the male and female of the first pair of e

Peridinin Torsional Distortion and Bond-Length Alternation Introduce Intramolecular Charge-Transfer and Correlated Triplet Pair Intermediate Excited States.

The nature of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and the mechanism of intramolecular singlet fission (SF) in peridinin remain open research questions. Obtaining an understanding of the population evolution from the bright state to dark state following a photoinduced electronic transition is critical. Unambiguously describing this evolution in peridinin, and light-harvesting carotenoids in general, has proven elusive experimentally and computationally. To offer a balanced description of the bright- and dark-state electronic structures, we here apply ab initio multireference perturbation theor

Reversible bond formation enables the replication and amplification of a crosslinking salen complex as an orthogonal base pair.

The universal genetic code relies on two hydrogen-bonded Watson-Crick base pairs that can form 64 triplet codons. This places a limit on the number of amino acids that can be encoded, which has motivated efforts to create synthetic base pairs that are orthogonal to the natural ones. An additional base pair would result in another 61 triplet codons. Artificial organic base pairs have been described in enzymatic incorporation studies, and inorganic T-Hg-T and C-Ag-C base pairs have been reported to form in primer extension studies. Here, we demonstrate a metal base pair that is fully orthogonal

Systematic Assessment of the Catalytic Reactivity of Frustrated Lewis Pairs in C-H Bond Activation.

Unreactive C-H bond activation is a new horizon for frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) chemistry. This study provides a systematic assessment of the catalytic reactivity of recently reported intra-molecular FLPs on the activation of typical inert C-H bonds, including 1-methylpyrrole, methane, benzyl, propylene, and benzene, in terms of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The reactivity of FLPs is evaluated according to the calculated reaction thermodynamic and energy barriers of C-H bond activation processes in the framework of concerted C-H activation mechanisms. As for 1-methylpyrrole, 14

Pair bonding sex-specifically improves object recognition memory in monogamous prairie vole.

Recent reports suggest that intimate social relationships can modulate cognitive functions by altering neuronal circuits. However, the influence of social bonding on cognition remains poorly understood. Here, we examined the effects of pair bonding on cognitive function in prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster), a socially monogamous rodent. In the novel object recognition test, pair bonded males and females spent significantly more time investigating a novel object than a familiar one, whereas voles cohoused with a same-sex cagemate showed no such preference. However, only pair bonded females e

The prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster): an animal model for behavioral neuroendocrine research on pair bonding.

Pair bond formation has been investigated much less than many other social behaviors, perhaps in part because traditional laboratory mice and rats do not exhibit this behavior. However, pair bonding is common among monogamous animals such as the prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster). In this review, we discuss how the prairie vole has been used as a model system to investigate the neurobiology of pair bonding. Descriptions include neuroanatomical differences between monogamous and non-monogamous voles, as well as how manipulations of vasopressin, oxytocin, dopamine, and corticosterone systems af

Additional hydrogen bonds and base-pair kinetics in the symmetrical AMP-DNA aptamer complex.

The solution structure of an adenosine monophosphate (AMP)-DNA aptamer complex has been determined previously [Lin, C. H., and Patel, D. J. (1997) Chem. Biol. 4:817-832]. On a symmetrical aptamer complex containing the same binding loop, but with better resolved spectra, we have identified two additional hydrogen bond-mediated associations in the binding loop. One of these involves a rapidly exchanging G imino proton. The phosphate group of the AMP ligand was identified as the acceptor by comparison with other aptamer complexes. Imino proton exchange measurements also yielded the dissociation

A Highly Reactive Geminal P/B Frustrated Lewis Pair: Expanding the Scope to C-X (X=Cl, Br) Bond Activation.

The geminal frustrated Lewis pair tBu2 PCH2 B(Fxyl)2 (1; Fxyl=3,5-(CF3 )2 C6 H3 ) is accessible in 65 % yield from tBu2 PCH2 Li and (Fxyl)2 BF. According to NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography, 1 is monomeric both in solution and in the solid state. The intramolecular P⋅⋅⋅B distance of 2.900(5) Å and the full planarity of the borane site exclude any significant P/B interaction. Compound 1 readily activates a broad variety of substrates including H2 , EtMe2 SiH, CO2 /CS2 , Ph2 CO, and H3 CCN. Terminal alkynes react with heterolysis of the C-H bond.
